How do I pronounce "sh" sounds better?

I have a lot of clients who have trouble with this distinction. Here's how I teach it in very plain English:Start with the S sound. Notice that the tongue feels pretty flat in your mouth, although high in the mouth. The sides of the tongue line the inner sides of your top teeth where they meet the gums. The tip of the tongue does not make contact with your teeth. The sound is created by the friction caused when the air travels over your tongue and through your teeth. Your mouth (lips) should be relaxed, but you could also make the sound by pulling the sides of the lips back (like when making the EE sound in "cheese").Now, to create the SH, you are going to curl the tip (and only the tip) of your tongue up slightly in your mouth (not past the vertical). It still should NOT make contact with the back of your teeth or roof of your mouth. The tip of your tongue should be curled up behind the ridge of your mouth (that bumpy part behind your teeth) in the open space under the roof of your mouth. Release air the same way you do for the S. Now the sound is a bit stronger because the air is traveling into your mouth, up and over the tongue and out through the teeth. There is more friction. Now your lips - they should push out slightly in a more rounded position. Not a full kissy face like a W, but about half way there. Pretend you're in the same room as some noisy kids - if you don't have your own, I'll send you mine - and say SHHHHHHHH....... I hope this helps!

How do you pronounce "Hanon" the composer of 60 Piano Exercises fame?

Good question! I was all set to answer with "rhymes with cannon." But your reason for asking got me wondering. Having taught music for many years, I still think the "rhymes with cannon" answer is correct in the U.S. However, your old teacher may have been from another country, or taught herself by an old European! My teacher was Estonian...you should hear how he pronounced cookie! But he did rhyme Hanon with cannon. Hope you get a more definitive answer. Or try a music dictionary.

I am an asian and i can't pronounce the american "th" is there any speech exercise do u know that will help m

i believe the reason i can't master the "th" is because i'm used to replace the "th" with the letters "t" and "d" like "thing= ting" but i know it is wrong and mainly it has to do with my ear, my ear can't distinguish between the letter D and the Th, is there any exercise or any way where i can fully hear the "th" sound and be able to recognize it and distinguish from the letter D and maybe the letter T but more of the letter D etc dere = there them= dem i can't seem to hear the difference any help? I know there are two sound in the "th" the voice and unvoice, and i also know you pronounce it by sticking your tongue between your teeth, but i can only do it when i'm concious of my tongue movement and force my tongue to move out between the teeth so i'm trying to pick up the sound by my ear, but i can't seem to do it p.s. this is refering to american english

How to pronounce NG sound in thai?

The sound is in English, but only at the end of syllables, like in "wiNG" or "runniNG." To practice saying it at the beginning of a syllable, where as you've found out it can also appear, try pronouncing English words with the "ng" in the middle, like "swiNGer" or "swiNGing." Say them slowly and really draw out the "ing" sound, and you should feel yourself saying "swing...nger" and "swing...nging". This "ng" sound that bleeds onto the beginning of the second syllable is the sound you're trying to achieve. Notice the position of your tongue and the shape your mouth has to be in to make it, then try to pronounce the same words without saying the first syllable, like "nger" and "nging." Keep practicing that until it becomes easy for you to reproduce :)

Can I pronounce the Russian "p" as I'd pronounce the German "r" in words like raus?

>Can I pronounce the Russian "p" as I'd pronounce the German "r" in words like raus? You can but then you’ll sound like a rhotic Russian :) (what the Russians call картавый).If you want to pronounce hard Russian P (R) properly, do the following exercise: try saying Eddy-Teddy-Freddy as fast as you can as many times as possible. This exercise will help you trick your brain and by repeating D & T get your tongue in a position to pronounce the trilled R as a 100% Russian :)Another trick you can try is to say “hrrrrrrr” while exhaling and keeping the R as long as possible - as soon as you feel the tip of the tongue vibrating near the upper bridge, try saying работа, рыба, рак or any other word with a hard R.After you master the hard R, you’ll have to get used to pronounce the soft R a bit differently. In order to learn that difference, try the famous Russian tongue-twister:Ехал Грека через рекуВидит Грека - в реке ракСунул Грека руку в рекуРак за руку Греку "цап"!with the soft R's in italics and the hard R's in bold.
