How To Reduce Screen Brightness On Windows 7 Partitioned On Mac

How Do You Adjust the Screen Brightness of a Windows Server 2008 workstation (laptop)? ?

I'm running a dual-boot system right now, with Vista x64 on one partition and Server 2008 on the other. Server 2008 just seems to inherit the brightness from the last setting I run on Vista, regardless of whether or not it's plugged in.

Just wondering if anyone can point me to a place to do this easily in the OS itself (Server, not Vista), or find me a registry edit to enable it. Any solution would be great.

Why does something on a Mac screen look so much better than the same thing (such as a webpage in the same browser) on most PC screens?

To be honest, I'm not sure it has anything to do with hardware at all (assuming comparable screen sizes and resolutions, of course). The only thing I could think of would be if Apple was using IPS displays for their notebooks, but that's not yet the case. It seems like the major PC manufacturers, like Apple, offer LED-backlit displays on their notebooks, so they're comparable in terms of fundamental technology. The venerable Joel Spolsky has a great post on the software roots of the subtle image differences I think you're referring to here: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/it...To borrow from his post, both Windows and OS X use sub-pixel rendering to improve the appearance of the font at lower resolutions, but they do it in different ways. As Joel writes,Apple generally believes the goal of the [rendering] algorithm should be to preserve the design of the typeface as much as possible, even at the cost of a little blurriness.Microsoft generally believes that the shape of each letter should be hammered into pixel boundaries to prevent blur and improve readability, even at the cost of not being true to the typeface. So, as you can see from Joel's image below, you clearly get different results. Obviously, whichever one is more preferable is a matter of personal taste. I tend to like the OS X approach to font rendering myself, but to each his (or her) own. I suppose you could argue that the OS X approach is more aesthetically appealing on a subconscious level because it more closely mirrors print conventions, which we're accustomed to (for now, anyway), but I'm sure there are those out there who prefer the Windows approach for one reason or another.

Should I save up for a new windows PC or a new MacBook Pro?

A mac. If you buy a new computer, it will feel new for around 6 months. If you're lucky. I mean, they sell it to you full of crap anyway. Buying a mac (still a computer but yano) you will feel like you have a great machine endlessly.I've had mine for nearly 2 years (MacBook Air 13-inch) and in that time I've never had any real issues. Unlike my siblings and friends who purchased PCs. (I know this because it's me that has to spend hours cleaning the mess windows leaves behind during use) Buying a Mac let's you use OSX. OSX looks after itself, unlike a PC. For example, my machine boots in under 11 seconds. And it's 2 years old. My sisters machine takes 5+ minutes, she's had it 8 months. You'll notice the difference the moment you turn it on, you're owning the Ferrari of machines and guess what, you'll still get that buzz in 2 years, because it's not going to become old like PCs do. The joy of using a fast reliable computer compared to the annoyance of using a slow, unreliable one, is a big difference, how much will you use your machine? It's like you have a nerd living inside your machine, constantly ensuring everything is running smoothly before hiccups come about. Sure it's not perfect, nothing is. But knowing that you will enjoy your investment for many years is a great feeling, compared to the uncertainty of a PC.Ofcourse others disagree and believe a PC can be better (I'm sure it can for some people) but unless you need a PC, I'd go for a mac, you can even use Windows on it! So in essence, you've got the best of both worlds. My mac makes my life a lot easier. I work with Windows machines all day at work and it's so frustrating, although I am a Microsoft Certified Technician hah! I just love the smooth experience of OSX, it's like a holiday when I use it, it's not work, it's fun.

What is the reason behind every keyboard having 12 function keys?

The original PC keyboard had only ten Function Keys. In early DOS programs like MS Word and Word Perfect, heavy use was made of these keys. As WordStar was originally conceived on a machine without Function Keys, it continued to rely heavily on its CTRL-K interface.I don’t know why IBM decided to add two additional Function Keys when redesigning the keyboard for the AT.Conversely, the first Mac didn’t include Function Keys and introduced us to those horrible short cuts of ⌘-X, ⌘-C, ⌘-V etc., and because Windows was a blatant copy of the Mac, near-identical shortcuts (except using the Control key instead of the Mac’s Command key), along with the stupid use of a Modifier key to activate menus (what was wrong with the established Esc-based menu system of DOS Word?). Therefore, many function keys have fallen into disuse unless specifically programmed by the end user. Many early machines had variable numbers of function keys. I have an old IBM terminal keyboard with 24 discreet Function Keys. Wang machines had additional Function Keys, and the Wang 2200 programming keyboard actually had 32 of them. The keyboard on which I am typing this answer is a Gateway AnyKey 2000, which has function keys along the top and down the left hand side. Instead of the normal “inverted-T” for cursor control, there is a group of nine keys. The center key defaults to “space”, the surrounding eight keys all point outward from the center including diagonals. This keyboard is fully remappable and macro-programmable. In default mode, the left hand function keys are identical to the top row ones.Although the Mac has basically copied the IBM Model M Extended keyboard and then hacked it slightly by renumbering the extra keys to the right of the 12 function keys, it would seem that the Model M Extended is now the de facto standard layout with many having the extra “Windows” keys physically removed*, with some manufacturers adding custom multi-media buttons (certainly not “keys”) along the very top.* Some gaming keyboards have a switch to disable the “Windows” keys, but I continue to see many keyboards in use that have had those three keytops physically removed.
