Is it safe to remove a SIM card while your phone is on?

There's no reason why you would need to power the device off just to remove a SIM Card unless the SIM Card cannot be physically removed without removing the battery. It will not cause any damage to the SIM Card if that was a concern. If you insert a SIM Card into the device then certain carrier-branded phones require an automatic restart for network provisioning, but otherwise you don't necessarily need to reboot even after inserting a SIM Card. Just need to adjust the network settings.

How can I remove the SIM card from my iPhone if I don't have the special key?

Insert a pin or paper clip into the side of the phone in the hole in the sim tray and apply mild pressure. The sim tray should pop right out. From there, remove or replace the SIM card and be sure to replace the sim tray the same direction you took it out. It should just click in and you’ll be good. Sometimes a restart is required, and it’s usually recommended to do this whole thing while your phone is off anyways. Hope this helps! :)

Should I shutdown my phone while removing the SIM tray?

Some phones has the capability to detect new sim and initiate the network operator automatically. This kind of phones don't need any restart or shutdown, it'll automatically take care of everything. For the phones without these capability you need to restart the phone so that on booting it'll initiate the network. Other than this there no MUST rule to shutdown phone while accessing sim tray.In my view many of the recent smart phones the auto sim detection feature. Still if you are not getting network try restart once.

Do the iPhone 4/4S and new iPhone 6s Plus have the same SIM card holders?

Apple has used smaller and smaller sim cards over the years.  There have been three sizes.  The initial large size was used up through the 3GS phone. The medium size was used with the 4 and 4S phones.  But with the iPhone 5 and more recent, the small size sim card has been used.  So your iPhone 4 sim card will not fit. However, some people have cut down the sim card to work as the new smaller size.  That can be very difficult to get right.  It's not something I'd personally recommend. It's a lot easier and much more reliable to simply to get a replacement sim card from your mobile carrier.

How can I open the SIM card tray of an iPhone 5S without a tool?

You can’t. You would need at least the simplest and readily available tool in the form of a straightened paper clip or a normal size safety pin. But be careful when inserting a safety pin into the hole, the pointed needle tip might damage the inside.

How can I open an iPhone SIM tray if it won't open the normal way?

You could partially remove your iPhone’s screen try ejecting the SIM Tray and then push down on the it where it is exposed by the removed screen. I had to do that with my 6S due to a sim card being slightly bent and getting stuck in there. I’m sure Apple would also be willing to help you out with it even if your are out of warranty; might be worth calling there support or scheduling an ppointment at the genius bar.

How do you get a jammed SIM (without the tray) out of an iPhone?

We had a sim card stuck (without the tray) in the iPhone 6S and this is what we did to get the phone out (Please see next paragraph). A Quick lookup on the net established the issue of the Sim card getting stuck in iPhones was a common problem frustrating many users. We took 2 paper clips and straightened them out. Use a paper clip to move the Sim card out with an alternate lever action on both sides of the Sim card. Do this bit by bit. and very gently . Please note that this process is extremely delicate and is best done with steady hands. Certainly not something to be done when you are in a hurry. This look more than 40 minutes until the SIM card was finally out. With a small bright torch I was able to locate the sim in the phone. It was roughly 4 cm inside the phone.I didn’t think of it then but I think toothpicks could work as well instead of paper clips. You might need two people to do this. Please note that trying to get the SIM card out this way may scratch or damage your phone. It’s a risky procedure. If you are not sure, just take the phone to your nearest iPhone shop of your service provider. Maybe they will be able to help. The reason why did it was that at the time of writing this answer, we lived in a small, remote town and the closed Apple shop was a good 250 kilometres away.NB: - I have concluded that given how the SIM card is inserted into and stored in an iPhone it is a bad idea to change Sim cards regularly with the iPhone 6 because of the risk of sim card getting stuck in the phone. The simcard can easily slip out of its holder and fall into the phone.
