How to Send Free SMS in Japan

How do I send an email to Japan?

I've been emailing a couple friends who live in Japan, and I recently got an email from a friend I haven't talked to in a while. I replied to her, but the email wasn't sent.

She uses XXXXX@ezweb.ne.jp address, but so do all my other friends and emails to them are sent perfectly fine.

I've tried sending it with live.com (hotmail) and yahoo.co.jp (Yahoo Japan) but neither of them work.

Does anyone know why it's not being sent?

Also, would I be able to send a message via my iPhone 4 SMS to my friend's cell phone email address in Japan?

How can I iMessage my friend who lives in Japan from the USA?

I have a friend who lives in Japan. He has an iPhone but his number format is different than ours (xxx-xxxx-xxxx) and iMessage isn't recognizing the number as an iMessage, and I don't want to be charged for international texts. Since we both have iPhones, shouldn't we be able to iMessage for free since it uses WiFi opposed to SMS?

What is the mechanisam used by free SMS websites to send sms via internet.?

Virtually every free SMS website uses a process called "SMTP text" or "email-to-text" which, when simplified, means that texts are sent via email to each of the respective carriers using a protocol that they publish (e.g., 9876543210@vtext.com will send a text message to that number on Verizon Wireless).  Sending texts via email is free, but suffers from many disadvantages:They are subject to spam filters the same as regular email.Delivery can be delayed, or messages can be lost altogether. There is no tracking mechanism and, unless special mechanisms are utilized, there is no way to determine delivery status.Carriers prohibit the use of email-to-text for commercial purposes and can fine users thousands of dollars per message for using their networks that way.  (Despite your own personal feelings about the carriers the networks that they build are, in fact, theirs - leaving spectrum allocations aside for the moment - as they've invested the capital to build them and thus can set the rules.)True text messages - "real" SMS - goes through a different type of gateway, is trackable and is opened within three minutes 95% of the time.  It's a different animal altogether.  If you are using email-to-text through a website that offers it for occasional communication with cell phone users it's fine and carriers won't hassle anyone about it.  When you attempt to use it for commercial purposes and bypass the carrier's chargeable message mechanism they can, will and have blocked messages and fined users.   We have actually published a White Paper about this called "The Truth About 'Free' Text Messaging" which I would encourage you to read if you want more detail.  Page on Textpower
