How To Start A High School Cheerleading Team

How to make your high school cheerleading team ?

I have done cheerleading for so many years but im am scared i will not make my high school cheer team. What should i do to prepare myself b4 tryouts ? How to make my jumps better, get more flexibility ?

High school cheerleading or dance team?

you should check with the sponsors to see which is cheaper. depending on what you are required to purchase will change costs. at my school cheerleading is a lot more expensive.

you dance in musicals, but do you have previous training otherwise? was it hard to get on the cheerleading team in middle school? do you tumble? some high school teams require tumbling to make the squad.

dance team will be more work than musical dancing, since roles are also given based on vocal talent (i know, i'm in musical and on one of the dance teams at my school). keep in mind that dance teams are a lot more specific than musicals, with complicated choreography. cheerleading is stiffer than traditional dance, and there are stunts.

please dont listen to people's stereotypes. being a cheerleader or dancer will not automatically make you conceded or popular. that will depend on personality and friend choice.

what did you like most about cheerleading? what do you like about dancing? no one but you can make the choice for you. you need to decide what you like better. both require intense practice, hard work, and passion.

and keep in mind, if you dont like one, there is always next year to try the other :]]

Could you start a cheerleading squad at a high school?

i used to be a cheerleader, and still have several friends who are. the reason i no longer cheer is that none of my high school's cheerleading teams compete, which was my favorite part of cheering. most of the cheerleaders i know wish that they could compete too. so when i was at my younger sister's cheerleading competition this morning, i had an idea. could i start a competition cheerleading squad at my school?

How Do You Start A Cheerleading Team At Your School?

Okay, my school had a cheerleading team a while ago. We had to get rid of the team because some of our cheerleaders were bigger and we got called Zephyr Heffers. It was a bad representation of the school. How do I convince the principal and school board to let us have a cheerleading team again? Or even just a cheer team that doesn't go to away games or anything, just does a half show at home games for football, volleyball, and basketball. Thanks you so much!

Is it too late to start Cheerleading at 14?

NO! it is DEFINITELY not too late. I'm 15 and last year when i was 14 i decided to cheerlead for the first time. I started in preparing around november of last year and took a few tumbling classes, which is what i think you should do too. Also, learn Cheerleading motions maybe from youtube, or just google them. Also try asking a friend. Even if you're a little on the chubby side, that could be really good since you're 5'5 so you'll make the perfect base! If you're not flexible, STRETCH. Before i did cheerleading i was NEVER considered flexible at all but i stretched every night until my toe touch was perfect. Working out your thighs will help with that as well. It is going to be time consuming to do cheerleading but if you're really passionate about it and you want to do it, then its definitely possible that you'll make the team. I was in the same position you were in last year and now i'm on my high school team :)! So take a few tumbling classes and try to get your back handspring, CONDITION and work on your arms and legs especially, and also work on you dancing skills, as well as motions and jumps. And you'll be all set!!

How long is a high school cheerleading season?

Do you do a split season or full season? Are you competitive? My season lasts 10 months, June and July are our only months off and even then we still have workouts.

How much different is high school cheerleading to all star cheerleading?

I don’t know your skills therefore I don’t know which level you would be in, but remember that all-star teams are first of all much more competitive and harder to be in. If you choose to do all star cheerleading you have to be dedicated. Many who do all star, eat, sleep and breath cheerleading. The competitions are bigger and more serious than a High school competition. All-star cheerleaders don’t cheer on games with pom poms, they constantly prepare for competitions or showcases (or you personally take private classes or go to open gym to work on your skills) Remember that you need a good technique in all-star cheerleading.High school cheerleading can be challenging depending on which skill level the team are on. High school cheerleading does competitions but not as many but there are usually games every week. Cheerleading takes time. If you feel like you don’t have that time, you should maybe try to find a training cheerleading team who doesn’t compete. I’ve had teammates who did so much outside cheerleading that they didn’t work on their gymnastic skills or missed practices. It affected the team in the long run. Therefore really consider how much you want it.Either you choose All star or high school cheerleading, both will take time and dedication. All star might be a step higher when it comes to how much you want it, you have to always be available or someone else will gladly take your place.Of course, you can still do basketball and softball as just an activity but perhaps not regularly since there will be many cheer practices. What also makes all star better than high school cheerleading is probably the floor. HS cheer has “dead floor” there are no bouncing and it’s very uncomfortable to tumble on, all star has “spring floor” and it gives you a little bounce when tumbling, it will especially help a lot when working on advanced gymnastic.Goodluck, I hope you figure it out.

Should I join cheerleading or tennis for high school?

This brings back memories as I was in your exact position back in high school (which was 10 years ago--holy cow, I'm old now).I ultimately chose tennis. However, I will say that I absolutely loved cheer for the one year that I competed. In fact, I transitioned to competitive cheerleading after doing gymnastics for a couple years, which made cheer seem "safer" in comparison. The major advantage of joining a cheer team is that you have a team who you'll develop strong bonds with. Doing stunts, tumbling, and dancing all while being perfectly in sync with each other and smiling through sprained joints are examples of hardships that bring people closer together. So if cheer is what you enjoy, by all means pursue it.In the end, the key differentiator for me was the risk of injury and amount of time required. Tennis players from my high school have their fair share of injuries as well, but not nearly as often as my cheer teammates experienced. The total hours required for practice was about 75% of my cheer practice hours. Tennis is actually a rather lonely sport (read Agassi's autobiography "Open" for deeper insight). Ultimately, it's you out there alone on the courts and no one can help you but yourself. Pretty different mentality from cheer.  So what do you value the most? Understand your internal value system and go from there to make your decision. Good luck!
