How To Stop Mindless Snacking

How can I stop eating all the time?

It's a mind over matter issue and it is something that needs to be rectified as snacking unecessarily like this can lead to gradual weight gain which im sure you don't want.

You basically need to work out why you are eating when you are not hungry it's either one of 3 things.
- Boredom, you snack because there is nothing else to do.
- Emotions, you eat when you are emotional as a comfort.
- Habit, you have always snacked like this and gotten into a habit of it.

If it is boredom you snack for then you need to find other things to keep you amused (and not TV as alot of mindless snacking happens in front of the idiot box) something practical maybe do some cleaning or go visit friends.
If it is emotional you need to find another way to deal with emotions without turning to food. Try writing in a journal or maybe join a gym and sweat off that bad day your having.
If it is habit this will be the hardest to break but you will simply need to remind yourself you ARE NOT hungry and DO NOT need this food.

Hope I helped.

How do I stop myself from snacking all the time even when I'm not hungry?

Water, water, and then when you finish the water, more water. Sounds simplistic, but seriously; water. MANY times when we think we want to eat, it is a symptom of dehydration. We humans have a bad habit of waiting until we are ‘dying of thirst” to drink water, and when one gets to that point, one is already partly dehydrated.Water helps fill your belly, taking away the craving for food. Add some lemon juice to it if you can’t stomach plain water. Or even those packs of artificially sweetened flavored beverages like Crystal Light. Yes, you are putting chemicals in your body, before anyone berates me for suggesting them, but it is far better to make sure one is hydrated and not mindlessly eating, and if downing a couple packets a day of a “diet” beverage stops you from taking in hundreds of empty food calories, it’s worth the trade off.Other ways to avoid noshing when you shouldn’t be? Same way one can avoid anything that isn’t healthy physically or mentally; distraction (while drinking that water, of course :-P ). Go read your favorite book, go for a walk, go clean the house. Do NOT however, sit and watch TV; that is one of the biggest culprits in contributing to mindless eating. After a while two things will happen; 1) you’ll be drinking a lot more and be craving water instead of say, Doritos, and 2) you’ll be more in control of your eating habits rather than your eating habits being in control of you.

How do I stop my habit of chewing on pencils?

I would suggest a change to your environment and/or a change in the stimulus. I believe these two things lead to effective change. To give you an example, I had a bad habit of coming home and sitting down in a particular chair. This chair faces a large flat-screen TV. I am now more prone to turn on a channel and start watching, rather than beginning a task that might better suit my time. What do I do to break the habit? Well, I can re-position the furniture so that my brain doesn’t run on auto-pilot when I walk in the door, or I could tape a note to the chair to remind me to go into another room where the TV isn’t.Now to solving your pencil dilemma. First, think about when you tend to chew on pencils. Does this only happen in a particular environment? While working on an assignment (homework) ? Or, do you chew on a pencil any time you have one in hand? One solution might be writing in pen. Most pens have a plastic outer layer which won’t taste the same as the wooden pencil. If you don’t think that will work, is it possible to coat the pencil/pen in something that would taste horrible? (use your imagination) In this way, your brain begins to associate the chewing on the pencil with punishment / pain instead of reward/ pleasure. If it’s an option, can you type rather than write physically on paper? As another idea, you might consider eating a snack while you work/write. In this situation, you are chewing on something else, rather than the pencil. Granted, I don’t want to encourage mindless snacking, as this is another habit that people try to break. The main point is to give you ideas about how to change your environment/stimulus in a way that works for you. Best wishes!

What are some tips for controlling the urge to snack while at a sedentary job?

The urge to snack at work is likely coming from either stress or boredom--neither of which you may be able to control that well do to the job environment you're in, but you can control your response to them and avoid mindless snacking. 1.  Make sure you're eating properly at your real meals, and allowing for healthy snacks mid-morning amd mid-afternoon within your overall calorie guidelines. 2.  Make sure you're not skipping breakfast as you rush off to work which could lead you to be hungry before you should be. 3.  Chew gum--I find the Extra flavors--some of which are even designed to be desert flavors, especially satisfying. Check out my blog post review at http://melaniejor.typepad.com/th... html 4.  Sip water--you may not really be hungry, you may be thirsty--especially from a recycled, dry air environment.  Plus the water is good for you and filling. 5.  Despite your best efforts, you really may need to give in to snacking at times, so keep a small stash of healthy snacks in your desk and/or office refrigerator, so if you feel like munching on something you can't get into too much trouble.  Try cereal like Cheerios, Clif Bar's kids' version called a Z-Bar (smaller and less calories than a typical energy bar), pre-portioned nuts, fruit, low-fat string cheese, and 100-calorie packs of your favorites. Lastly, be sure to move around at work to refocus yourself--stand up for a few minutes every half hour, take a walk around the floor every hour, take a walk at lunchtime and get in workouts before or after work as often as you can. Hope that helps!

What is the BEST appetite suppressant?

How do you prevent yourself from the desire to "finish eating the entire package/bag"? (which often increases your caloric intake for the day)

Grab a small bowl and fill it instead of eating right out of the bag - limit yourself to ONLY eating the amount in your small bowl.  When YOU eat out of the bag/package, you are lead to mindless eating.  Do YOU snack on your pre-package items while watching tv or on the computer?  This is mindless snacking.   a general rule, Pay attention to your body and stop eating when you feel 80% full.  Remember to eat slowly and enjoy each mouthful.  When you pay attention to what you are eating, you will enjoy it and YOU will become satisfied with your 1-small bowl (it will be enough).  Another tip, when you get home from shopping,  divide up your pre-package foods.  Example, if you purchased chips, open up the full bag and divide into smaller portions by placing the chips into small, snack sized zip-lock bags.  Oh, and when you are shopping, limit the amount of snacks you purchase,  Instead of buying 3-different things, buy ONLY 1-bag of your favourite.  And don't worry, although you may struggle at first, these small simple steps will become a habit and it will become easier over the next few weeks.  Feel free to contact me if you need to chat, bodybusiness.ca
