How To Stop My Hair Extensions Looking Like Dreadlocks

Can you make hair extensions into dreadlocks? ?

Do you want permanent dread extensions (dreadlock your real hair AND human hair to make them longer), or you want dreadlocks that you can remove after so-many months?

Either way, yes, but I wouldn't go to the expensive of getting extensions or wasting human hair on dreadlocks if you plan on removing them. You can make dreadlocks by backcombing synthetic kanekelon hair (about $3 a pack), twisting it, then using a tea kettle, blow dryer, steamer, or boiling water to seal them. Once they're dry, they can be braided into your real hair. If you use a natural color and don't make them too big or too thin it will look real. You can use human hair, but again, it's more expensive and difficult to seal (unless you can find kinky human hair).

If you want permanent dread extensions, dread your real hair. Then poke a hole at the end of the dread and thread human hair of the same width into the hole, backcomb, twist and seal with wax.

Getting dreadlocks, and maybe extensions?

MY HAIR STORY:
Ok so I have a mohawk at the moooment, and I'm getting a little tired of the high maintanence hairstyle. The constant hairspray, gel, straightening, only sleeping on my side, constantly shaving the sides, dying it weird colours and so on...
So I've decided I'd quite like dreadlocks. But obviously, I only have an inch of hair either side of my head, and about 6-8 inches of hair down the middle. Now I'm gonna grow it out for a couple of months so its at least 10 inches down the middle and 5 inches either side of my head. (Or as long as it can be before I can dread it).
I was thinking about getting those fake braid-in dreads you can get, but I discovered it would cost me about £350 which is WAY out of my price limit.

MY ACTUAL QUESTION:
Can you get really short dreadlocks, and then add some kind of realistic dreadlock extension to make them look longer?

Or is it better to get human hair extensions before dreading the hair and then dreading your hair and the extensions together?

ps. does anyone know how long hair has to be before you can turn it into dreads?

Oh and, if anyone gives me a big thing about "dreadlocks are disgusting, they're horrible, they're ugly, they're dirty"
I DONT CARE. They aren't any of those things and I think their beautiful and glorious. So if you give me that I'll thumb you down and anything else bad I can do to you through this website.

Can you put hair extensions in really short hair? The top of my hair is 3-4 inches and the sides/back is just about an inch, maybe an inch and a half. Can I fit clip on extensions if I back comb and layer them?

When it comes to short hair, there are numerous ways to add hair extensions and for beautiful transformation. If you have short hair you can add hair extensions for volume, for a pop of color, or for length.Well, it seems that the clip in hair extensions are the best choice for the short hair as they give instant volume and more important, length.Of course, if you do it for the first time, you might find the clipping in of the hair extensions a bit challenging, but you only need to follow some tips so that the final result is natural and nice. The main trick when blending hair extensions with your short hair is to take consideration layering. Even though you might think it’s a waste to get some cutting, the results are better than you’d think. Without layering the hair extensions, they would look totally unnatural on your natural short hair. You need to take a deep breath and do some trimming and layering on your hair in order to get the most natural appearance. As not all of us are hair stylists and layering the hair extensions is not quite easy-peasy, it’s safer to go to a professional hair-stylist for this part.Other way:If clip in hair extensions are not suitable go for tape in extensions. The tape is invisible, thin, lightweight and non-damaging, allowing your own hair to grow out while wearing these extensions!Tip:Your hair needs to be at least 4 to 6 inches long to wear extensions as the hair needs to cover the clips. You will want to mix short and long hair extension lengths for layers to look natural. So consider blending 14 and 18 inch hair. You don't want to have 3 inches of hair and then get 24 inch hair extensions, it won’t look natural and we want your hair to blend!IndianHair.net, we are the direct donar of indian remy hair extensions. We provide all kind of extensions with high quality. You can check our customer reviews on Instagram or in our site.Hope it will be useful. Thanks for reading.

Is my hair too short for dreadlocks?

Holy crap can't anyone just answer the question without saying how bad they look? I'm not crazy about them either but I'm not going to say someone is ugly because of them, get over it.
No I think you could have it done, depends on the person, if she says she can do it she probably can.

I have straight hair and im white but i want dreadlocks?

Hey there,
I have dreadlocks and I love them :)

Now, first I'd like to say I disagree with all the answers above me. I do not at all recommend going to a salon. Most salons specialize in dreading african american hair. You've made it clear that is not your hairtype so without going into details I will just say that it is very unlikely their techniques will work for you hair. On top of that it's way easy to start them yourself :)

Here's how I recommend starting them:

Conversely you could simply stop brushing your hair (but of course continue to wash them, greasy hair doesn't knot up nearly as well as clean hair). This will take longer but also creates lovely dreadlocks.

Now if you start doing some research you're going to come across a lot of websites trying to sell you wax. However I'd like to show you the other side of the wax debate if you're interested. This website explains why I will never ever ever put wax anywhere near my dreadlocks:
http://www.dreadlocktruth.com/whynotwax.... Definitely check it out if you start considering wax.

Annnd, 3 inches is generally considered just barely long enough to start dreadlocks. So you should be able to start them fir 4 inches but keep in mind that that means they will stick up quite a bit and be quite short for a while.

Best of luck! Feel free to use the link in my profile to email me if there's anything else I can do for you :)

Have curly hair and i want dreadlocks...?

Yes curly hair dreads the best/fastest... But you have to be willing to put aside at least a full weekend to initially install them properly. I recommend the backcombing/crochet needle method it creates neat looking dreads in a matter of hours and they can be washed within the first week you get them. You can always use water soluble all natural aloe vera gel to tame any frizz, just avoid hydrophobic gunk like wax it causes build up.

Or you could look into single ended synthetic dread lock extensions (install directions/tutorials and affordable dread extensions at "i kick shins" web store) they can be easily braided in and out of your own hair with out damage and can last up to 3 months at a time and the extensions themselves are reusable if cared for well.

That second "no no no" answer is perhaps the most vile sexist pile of BS i have ever heard only a drone/troll would actually "guarantee" that ignorant assumption, my fiancee loves my healthy & clean waist length dreads and i get complements pretty frequently from men and women of all ages.

How do people with dreadlocks keep their hair clean?

They wash them =)There have been many good comments in this feed about washing deadlocked hair, We sell and recommend Bumble and Bumble Seaweed Shampoo and Knotty Boys Deadlock Shampoo liquid or bars, but whatever you use RINSE, RINSE, AND RINSE!!Just because i haven't seen this comment, I want to stress, they need to be dried thoroughly after every wash. We recommend a shammy towel to really squeeze out the moisture and follow up with blow dryer if you plan on tying them up or putting into a tam or hat.

I hate my boyfriend’s dreadlocks?

It's really his hair, you can't do a thing about.

How often do you think he changes hairstyles? Today dreadlocks, tomorrow may be something new.

You love him, then you love everything about HIM, including his dreads.

You CAN, however, share him my knowledge of good hair care, re: dreadlocks . . . and he will decide from there, whether to keep it longer or cut it ASAP.

Traction alopecia is hair loss that occurs as a result of continuous pulling of the hair. Pulling may occur from hairstyles such as tight cornrows, plaits or braids with or without extensions, weaves, ponytails, dreadlocks, or even hair rollers or curlers, blow drying using round pro brush to straighten your hair. Natural hairstyles can also lead to traction alopecia as well. Long heavy locks and tightly coiled twists can lead to traction alopecia. The hair loss associated with traction alopecia typically occurs at the frontal hairline, at the temples or the area of the scalp above the ears. It may also occur at the posterior hairline. A hair transplant patient friend of mine, damaged his hair permanently by wearing it tightly pulled back in his early 20s. (see below)

How much do dreadlocks cost?

Prices vary from person to person. It really mainly depends on how many hours will be spent making the dreads and every loctician has their own rate. But in my experience ( i have been researching for a couple years now) it can cost anywhere from around 150 to 400 give or take a little. I got lucky and was referred to a girl that got her certification in Europe somewhere and she had originally quoted me $75 total, but she was just starting out and she was def one of the best id seen. I got nervous and ended up cancelling with her and now this time she quoted me $40 hr and she said the style I want would take 3-5 hrs. So i missed out on the $75 deal (7 mo ago) but the trade off is she works a lot faster now. Most experienced locticians charge around $300-$400 in my experience. Hope this helps.
