How To Strengthen A Horse With Muscle Atrophy

Why would disused muscles shorten as they atrophy?

Atrophy means loss/reduction of the organ. They shorten because of prolonged disuse.Use, on the other hand puts them to higher level of metabolism and hence construction of proteins that are required for muscle movements.

Why would disused muscles shorten as they atrophy?

They sort of dry up and shrink...

What is muscle atrophy?

a.) Loss of muscle size and strength
b.)Muscle cramps arising from insufficient warm-up
c.)Muscle spasms resulting from too rapid progressive overloading
d.) Alterations in heart muscle contractions when first initiating a fitness program

Muscle atrophy??????

Kelsey, I wish that could be true! Unfortunately there is no cure or for that matter any way of stopping the progression of the disease. Wearing the braces at least gives you the opportunity to continue to be able to walk. Just continue to do the exercise movements that should have been given to you in physical therapy. Any movements that you do are going to be helpful. Even light resistive work will help but you have to remember that overtaxing of the muscles is going to have a negative effect. I would suggest that you see a physical therapist who would assess where you are at this time and design a specific exercise program for you. The most important thing is not to get down mentally. Having worked with a number of patients with this diagnosis that can very easily occur. Continue to get aroud as best you can for any work done is better than none at all.

My pomeranian just got his splint off and now has muscle atrophy?

Muscle atrophy is completely normal after a cast removal. After cast removal, I found that swim therapy was the best for restoring muscle mass. The benefit is that there is no impact stressors. A dog as small as a Pom, you could fill the tub, and support his chest area while he moves his legs as if swimming. He doesn't need to actually go anywhere, just use the legs with the support of the water. (I'd use warm water, BTW).

You will need to do some ground exercise as well, as they need good blood flow to heal properly. Walk the Pom for increasingly longer distances, making sure to switch sides the dog is on frequently. Believe it or not, walking the dog on one side only can overdevelop muscles on one side and not the other.

Good luck!

I am basically bed-ridden and have muscle atrophy no doubt............?

Maybe writing to others; soldiers, prisoners, or the lonely. (penpal) You might be able to see the silver lining on your cloud while truly helping someone else. Not much work involved, and it gives you the ability to focus on something external for a while. I understand what it is like to be bedridden and to feel that bored and uncomfortable.
This site seems a little right wing, but if you google the word penpal you can find online and snailmail pen pals. Be careful to research a bit before you sign up for one, some look to be dating service type sites. The best of wishes to you!

Is muscle atrophy from years of inactivity reversible with exercise and weight training?

You can ALWAYS rebuild muscle, atrophied or not. If it was impossible to rebuild atrophied muscle there would be a LOT of people who have broken arms and legs and been in casts who had shriveled arms or legs.It won't be as easy as popping a pill, but you CAN do it!Begin with simply contracting or flexing the muscle. This is called "Isometrics." So, for atrophied legs for instance, lie in bed and contract the muscle, then relax. Repeat. Do this several times a day for at least 3-5 minutes, or what you can do, at a time. Next, sit in a chair and just lift your legs up in front of you until they're level. This is a "range of motion" exercise. If it's your arms that are atrophied, raise them up at your sides to shoulder level, then down, or in front of you to shoulder level, then down. Again, repeat until you're fatigued. Rest a minute, then do them again. Only you can judge your strength, but try to push yourself beyond what you think you can do each time. Finally, after a couple of weeks of this (or less if you're up to it) add some resistance, either an exercise band (buy at Walmart or any sporting goods store or Amazon for a few dollars), or some light weights. Increase the resistance and add weights as you feel comfortable. This will happen over a period of weeks, depending on how atrophied your muscles are. Be patient. The younger you are the faster you will recover. I'm 60 and very sedentary. I've recently started this program myself. I used to be a massage and physical therapy aide and I've seen some amazing results in people of all ages who have atrophied muscles due to surgery, illness, cancer etc. It IS possible to recover and build muscle and increase endurance and strength. The hard part is the MENTAL aspect, of doing the exercises several times a day. Going to a gym isn't necessary. You can do all this at home, but joining a gym helps get you out of the house and forces you to be in an environment where other people are also focused on their health. Good luck with this!

Horse's back legs goes out on him?

so I can't find it anywhere on google about what my horse is going through.
Anyhow when walking particularly in a circle when I walk him around you will see his left hind leg give out more than the right hind leg, its weird he's sound but every few steps his leg will just kinda drop its almost like a pinched nerve in his hind Im still not certain where this weakness is coming from, I want to say maybe hip or fetlock strain or weak strained leg???? he'll be walking and his leg will just give out on him not on every step but its there. I have had chiropractors come out and adjust him and work with him but it just seems to be getting more noticeable.. i know he was injured way before i bought him which could have an effect but it really looks like a strain maybe? anyone else deal with this? I do feel he is still sore backed hes developed a tiny lumbar hump im only interested if anyone has seen this before in a horse and what treatment was done. the only thing i can think of is the chiropractor hasn't gotten the exact spot yet? I think its strained he wasn't like this 5 mos ago when I got him I could trot or walk him in a tight circle and his back legs never gave out... it looks and seems like hes strained or a nerve is pinched... if anyone has been though this please share.
