How To Use New Facebook Hashtags

Why do people use hashtags on facebook?

Okay I was confused about this too, but then I finally figured it out. Now I really like hashtags :) Heres why I use them.

1. To quickly clarify something.

"Crap! Do you think I got glass in my eye? #shitmomsays"

It's quicker than writing "my mom said that, isn't that retarded?" which can be nice, especially if you are updating your status from your phone.

2. To add a few words that aren't part of the status, but are relevant.

"LMS if u pooh on urself <3 #beautifulthings"

3. To make a joke related to an internet meme.

"Just got out of the shower. Now I'm wet. #captianobvious"

But that's just me. Other people probably just use them to look cool.

What are good ways to use Facebook hashtags?

Hashtag turns your post into clickable links and makes your post more searchable on the platform. However, the Facebook search isn’t all that great and hence hashtags aren’t as useful here as they are on other platforms. Why?Reason being the users on Facebook have already chosen what pages, people they want to see, they wish to see only what they have chosen and things similar to it. Users of other platforms like Instagram and twitter are more exploratory by nature because is built that way. When you click on a hashtag you will be able to see all the post mentioning that hashtag on one page. The hashtag in facebook doesn't behave the same way as other platforms. Like on Instagram if you use a lot of hashtags you will get increased reach. In Facebook, if you use too many hashtags your reach will decrease. One or two is just fine. For example, I am working on launching my husband’s book launch “START LYING. STOP MOVING” and for the same, I wanted to make a hashtag, that solves below purpose:It has high recallIt resonates with my audienceIt is already trendingMy hashtag comes from the other half of the title #StartMoving . The first half stand alone leaves a negative impact.I made a quick search on the keywords and found it is trending. In ideal case someone reading the post feels curious about the post then should click on #StartMoving(click to see how it works) to see what other people are saying. This often happens in Instagram and twitter and rarely on Facebook.Tips:Use your existing Instagram and twitter hashtags on Facebook to have an integrated communication.Create your own hashtag to have more relevance to your audience. If you do not have the capacity to trend it use relevant, already trending hashtag.

Should I add hashtags on my Facebook posts?

Ooh don't do it! Please don't do it….except of course... If not for anything else, hash tags are ugly as (insert demeaning description). They just mess up the readers flow.Seriously speaking though, why do we need hashtags?to improve searchability,to improve performance of posts (that's all I can think about on the bounce)Facebook is setup in such a way that hash tags DO NOT particularly influence the performance of your posts. @Serene Yeung puts this clearly with the stats. This is the same with LinkedIn. With Instagram and Twitter, it's a necessity. However, as I said they're so ugly, they are hidden way below the discerning eyes of the readers (cue the barrage of hashtags hiding in the comment section of instagram posts)Except you are running a targeted campaign. A campaign that promotes a particular line brand product (#FirstNeverFollows), or one that promotes a cause (#BringBackOurGirls)... You get the idea!

How do you use hashtags (#) on Twitter and Facebook?

So I know by adding the hashtag before a phrase it adds your tweet to a list of tweets who were also tagged with the same word. This makes sense when using phrases or words like #obama or #(insert band name here), but I don't understand why people would tag something like #donttrustmewiththatknife #ever for a description of a Facebook picture. Two people commented on the #donttrustmewiththatknife #ever picture with, 1) #smallslowcuts and 2) #millionlittleones. First of all, who would ever search for #smallslowcuts in a tag, and secondly, who would search tags in the first place? Why use the hashtag symbol on a picture on Facebook when it doesn't connect to Twitter (FB status updates and Twitter are connected though, right?)? And finally, I really don't understand why people use Twitter. Do people go throughout their day saying things like, "Bum just made scene on the bus #hilarious". I just don't have any desire to know little things like that nor do I have the desire to tell things like that. What else do regular people use Twitter for?
Thanks

Why do people use hashtags on Facebook? What do they want to convey?

Hashtags are often used as a quick way to convey emotions or specify the theme or topic of status update on Facebook. They became an easy way to construct catchphrases on Facebook and to provide a comedic turn on a sentence that otherwise would be taken seriously or for face value. As other answerers pointed out, some also got used to traditions on other networks where hashtags work, such as Instagram's #throwbackthursday-s.

Hashtags in Facebook, and Closed Groups?

I have a question about the new Hashtags feature on Facebook, and I cannot find a definitive answer to my question anywhere online. Hashtags on Facebook are relatively new and I guess there's not much information on their quirky features yet.

Basically: if you post a message in a Closed or Secret Group that contains a hashtag, does that mean that - unusually - people not members of that group can see not only that message, but also other messages on that thread, the group's name and the identities of the people that posted messages to that thread?

The nearest thing to an answer I can find is in the third paragraph of this page: http://businesstoday.intoday.in/story/facebook-hashtags-will-help-weave-conversations/1/195813.html

"Facebook has many conversations happening in closed groups. There was no way till now for these conversations to run across groups. With the hashtag you will see conversations on a topic by just clicking the tag."

The Closed Groups feature is there for a reason, sometimes because the group is discussing topics that may be offensive or controversial to certain people if the group were open. And Closed Group's memberships are usually moderated.

Does the Facebook hashtag innovation mean that messages from these groups can now been seen by the public at large?

Why do people use hashtags to mark their posts on Facebook, Twitter etc?

While hashtags were intended to help people talk about different topics and help people join or follow along, in practice, people have taken to the form to intimate a kind of aside, or whispered comment that tweaks their meaning slightly. It's like shrugging your shoulders and grimacing while saying "I'm sorry I puked on your cat." Your body language tells the listener "well, I am sorry, but not that sorry because I hate your cat." But how do you express that in a text-only medium (without relying on emoji)? How about I'm sorry I puked on your cat. #sorryNotSorrySee how the meaning changes? You can still read the original message, but the hashtag (in this case) is used to fill in for the missing body language.Or at least that's what I think it does.

Why do people use hashtags on Facebook? Is it possible to use them for anything? If so, how?

These are some ways to use Hashtags:Tracking your brand-  Make sure you use hashtags relevant to the post and to your brand. A good way to use hashtags is for tracing conversations about your brand. For example, we would tag our posts with #SellMojo. When this word is searched, we would be sure to find results more relevant to us than we would have if we had tagged #ecommerce. Using a keyword like #ecommerce is not a bad idea for expanding your reach but for tracing your own brand, stick to relevant keywords.Right Keywords- Use the right keywords. Use hashtags to specify your location, your field of business and terms relevant to your target audience. This will make your brand easier to find and also provide relevant information to your audience. You can read more here:Facebook Hashtags: Using Hashtags on Facebook - SellMojo Blog
