Thanks for A2AWell I am definitely not a graphics programmer, and I dont really enjoy graphics programming, but my college degrees have made me suffer through bunch of those classes so I think I can give you a basic idea of this, but it might not be the best.You need to know C/C++ for sure(Or if you planning to use JOGL, then you need to know java ), because OpenGL and directX, both integrates with C++, and HLSL/GLSL, which are shading language and uses C style syntax. You can definitely get away with not knowing C, because its just the syntax.Now one of the most important thing about graphics is matrices. One can say you learn those in graphics classes, so its part of computer graphics but it really depends on how you are learning. If you are learning online, most of the graphics courses will assume you are good with matrices. There’s not a huge amount of demand for CUDA, but there’s always some companies looking. The caveat is that just knowing how to functionally implement CUDA is insufficient: you need to be intimately aware of how to extract performance from GPUs. The point, after all, is to get a lot more performance from the GPU than a superscalar, multicore-only system.NVIDIA and other companies are well aware that most developers don’t know how to tune performance of applications for specific processors. That’s why they provide GPU libraries presenting an interface for various application sets. So many people use matrix manipulations and algebra, basic machine learning algorithms, and so on, that it’s worth NVIDIA’s time to build a library so more people will just buy GPUs and never need to learn CUDA. When you have a specific problem that doesn’t have a library, then you need to write your own CUDA code.Coming to the second question, jobs that require CUDA and GPU knowledge (that I’ve been contacted about in the past year):Companies that manufacture GPUs: NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Samsung, Apple. They are both grammatically feasible but, whereas the first is a colloquial way of saying “it is totally irrelevant”, the second is a bit of a zen koan that blows your mind- you know, one of those questions like “what is the sound of one hand clapping?” or”what was your face before you were born?” These koans were designed to create a paradox that forces the mind to look beyond rational paradoxes and contemplate the formless reality beyond what we see as existence. This sentence, believe me, has much of the same effect.If you say “it has nothing to do with everything” (which I really really love by the way!) you are stating a mind-blowing paradox. You are saying that the topic has literally no relevance to everything that exists. Not “anything”, which would have been more mundane, and easier to understand, but rather “everything”! The positive phrasing of the statement through the use of the word “everything” is what makes it so mind-bogglingly “out there”. It is pure “does not compute”- but in a good way.Wow! That is a fantastic sentence! I can feel my mind slipping into meditative awe as I say it! What must every student taking up a dual degree at BITS Pilani know?
That just by chance you got yourself a really good deal. Engineering is obviously very different from the Physics, Chemistry and Math you studied in high school. While most of your peers chose their stream based on their experiences and knowledge they gathered in high school, you will get a chance to choose a stream by doing primer courses in almost all engineering disciplines. More than that, you will get a chance to observe how good/bad is the department for each discipline (in terms of facilities, quality of professors, course structure etc.).So apart from all the efforts you will put in getting into the right clubs/departments/sports teams, maintaining your CG and making friends, take this one year as your time to decide on which engineering discipline do you really want to pursue. Talk to your seniors, talk to your teachers. Most people in BITS are very friendly and you can strike a conversation very easily. I see a lot of freshers this days (more so for dualites) are way too worried about their academic performance and completely disregard everything else BITS has to offer. Yes, CG is important but, in a mindless pursuit of this CG, you are missing a lot of equally (if not more) important things that should be pursued at BITS. See, understandably, after JEE training, sitting in a room and studying is probably far more comfortable than heading out and talking to strangers. You will rationalise your anti-social attitude by telling yourself that academics are important and you should focus on only that. But you will know when you are over-doing it. That time, just stop studying and do yourself a favour. Get out of your room/library and get to know more people. Get to know more about Pilani. This small town has a lot of stories, a lot of traditions and a lot of interesting aspects. Now all of them belong to you and it's your turn to create stories and nurture traditions. Have fun!
