How do I repair a damaged Adobe Illustrator (.AI) file?
That's like asking how to I repair a car after an accident. The answer is that it depends on what's wrong with it. Make sure its name is in the correct format, ending in .ai . If you can get it open, you can copy any salvageable parts you can find into a new file. You may try opening it in Acrobat Pro, or copying parts into Illustrator. But there's no one fix I know of.

I doubt you'll be able to repair the file. What you could try instead is copy the content into another document and saving a new document. In order to avoid any corruption, save the new document with a simple, single word name onto your desktop. If copying the content still doesn't solve it, then you have something in the file causing the corruption. In that case, I would try to isolate the problem by copying sections at a time. Likely candidates for the corruption are linked images, fonts, items with transparency, clipping paths or highly complex items.

There’s a known issue with saving directly to removable drives or networks in Illustrator (or opening directly from them). Synched folders might also be an issue.You could try to first copy the file from the drive to your harddisk, then opening it.If that does not work, try and make a new file and then place (embed) the corrupt file in it. How do I save a Mac OSX compatible Adobe illustrator (.Ai) file using Windows 7?
An AI file can be opened in Windows or MAC OSX Adobe illustrator..If your Windows 7 version of Illustrator wont open the mac file then it’s more likely to be a versioning difference.So in your Mac OSX Illustrator, go to save as and save an earlier version like CS4. Then if your Windows Illustrator is CS4 or above it will open it.See screenshot below.Its probably just that illustrator on Windows is older than the illustrator on the Mac.
