How To Watch Netflix On Linux

Can you watch Netflix on Linux?

It's not easy but yes, you can. You can use WINE, which allows applications from Windows to run under Linux. Netflix uses Microsoft Silverlight against DRM (not the only reason though). You can use the tutorial from the link I've added (first one) to be able to watch Netflix on Linux. How to watch Netflix (Watch Instantly) in LinuxWine (software)Microsoft SilverlightDigital rights management

How do you use Netflix with Linux?

You can download Google Chrome and watch Netflix through that. It works seamlessly.Unfortunately, so far no other browser (not even Chromium) is compatible with Netflix under Linux, for DRM reasons I believe. Chrome comes with a proprietary blob that contains the necessary code for it to work; open-source browsers like Chromium and Firefox cannot include the blob, so Netflix doesn't work.

Does Netflix work with Linux?

Interestingly, I read the question as "does Netflix use Linux in its server environment," the answer to which is a pretty enthusiastic "yes."  Content servers run FreeBSD, but application servers run Linux. As for streaming onto Linux devices, the answer is a little complicated; the truth is that there are various Set-Top Boxes (STBs) that run some customized version of Linux on which you can stream Netflix (e.g. Roku),  generally Netflix has not worked on Linux because of its use of Microsoft's Silverlight DRM technology.  With the move to HTML5, it looks like Linux support may be around the corner -- see Native support for Netflix coming to Ubuntu for a related article.(As hard as it will be to keep this in mind, keep in mind I speak here as a tech person, not as an official representative of Netflix)

Is there a way to watch movies on Netflix on Ubuntu Linux without installing Wine?

I haven't done this myself, but Netflix's Instant Watch uses Silverlight. There's a Free (beer and speech) clone of Silverlight that's part of the Mono project called Moonlight. You might try installing the moonlight-plugin-mozilla package from Ubuntu, or depending on how well that works, check out http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/

What do you need to know to run Netflix on Linux?

How can I watch Netflix outside the US on Ubuntu 14.1?

Ubuntu isn’t the issue there. You will need to use the Chrome browser to watch movies on Netflix without having to install additional software but other than that, Ubuntu has nothing to do with it. This is a Netflix matter and what they allow each person to see based on their type of membership and actual physical location.

How do I install Netflix on a Linux Mint PC?

You will need a free product called Pipelight.  (Do not use Netflix-Desktop, it is an older product from the same people who did Pipelight.) Even for Pipelight there are lots of older instructions on the Web, so only use the link below. The instructions are here:   Pipelight - InstallationHowever, I'll give you a quick intro:a.  Follow the Ubuntu instructions (Linux Mint is Ubuntu under the covers.)b.  Open a terminal window and execute the commands shown on the page.c.  It won't hurt to run the two "remove" commands in the pink warning box.d.  You will need to know your administrator password for your Linux Mint account when running the "sudo" commands.e.  You will very likely have to run the user agent switcher step as well.  This fools Netflix into thinking that you are running Windows.  I used Firefox as my browser in Linux Mint and then told the user agent switcher that I was running Firefox on Windows.  Try a few different configurations (as shown in the FAQ for user agent switcher) until you find one that works.f.  That should do it.  Good luck!  I got my Linux Mint machine to play DVDs as well, that took a bit of work.  Let me know if you need those instructions.  :-)
