How To Write A Good Short 7 Minutes Film Script

How much footage do I need to make a 5-minute short film?

It's a great question as it means you are actually considering shooting on film! (For us nostalgic-types.) And yes, it starts with another question: Are you the director or the producer? If you are the director, the answer to how much film you need is as much as possible. :-) Why? Because much is to be said for having as many variations of takes that your actors and/or crew will put up with. Especially in the beginning when it may take you 10 takes to get what you could have landed in 3 wth more experience. Even experienced directors know what feels right on set may ultimately need to be tweaked as the entire film comes together in the edit room. This could mean the pacing of the scene, having enough coverage (including reaction shots), etc. Your first short may not be a master piece, but don't short change yourself at the outset by skimping on the amount of film....which ultimately may be decided by your money, aka your producer. If you are the producer, first figure out what format: 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm, etc. Smaller format means more frames per foot which = more screen time for less money. Next, figure out shooting ratio--meaning, how many takes to get it right. Let's assume you'll need to shoot 10 times as many takes as what will appear in your film. 5 minute film X 10 = 50 minutes of footage. I'm sure there are calculators on Google that will let you do the math for each format. For 35mm, a 1000ft magazine of film = about 11 minutes of film. So, 50 minutes is...right, about 5,ooo ft of film. (yes, I rounded)Figuring out shooting ratios is more art than science but anything between 5:1 to 10:1 is "normal" depending on your script. (And this is for fiction films. Docs may need much, much more.) Scripts are ball parked at a minute per page on average--and I'm assuming that's how you came up with a "5-minute" short--but as the old joke goes "Atlanta Burns" is an 1/8th of a page.Lastly, remember:  your costs for film are relatively cheap. Don't forget the costs for processing and transfer! That's the real expense. For example, 35mm was bid at 13 cents a foot but processing was 65 cents plus transfer, which can be many times that. So there ya' have it. A bit of ball parking but not rocket science. Good luck!

What would be the total cost to produce a 10-minute short film (indoor in a single location)?

The job role of a Line Producer is needed to breakdown the script and determine the actual budget to shoot a film, both feature or a short. They take from the producer criteria like: skeleton crew, maximum budget for production design, etc. And then they look at the script, determine any special shooting needs, crew demands (i.e. is there a drone shot? Special FX makeup?) and work out how much this film will take to shoot. In the local market for crew salaries. This question does not offer enough information to be able to put that budget together. And again, this is supposed to be a paid person’s job in the pre-production process.A very rough breakdown, going from what you gave me:3 1/3 pages shot per day = 3 day shoot (probably 12 hours). One location fee, which you seem to have already negotiated. And you either have insurance or you don’t. Again, you’ve already made that decision. One meal per day, plus snacks and beverages onsite throughout the day. Catering the meal is probably $12-$18 per person, per day (or more, depending on who you go with or less if you do this yourself and just have someone serve it at lunchtime). Plus about $5 per person in a Costco run for the craft services. You can look up gear rental costs at the local film/video/photography rental house. Be aware, shooting over a weekend often means a Friday AM to Monday AM rental, for less than a three-day rate. Or see if the crew will rent you gear they own as part of their pay, a flat rate of $500/day “friends” rate for a Gaffer with a truck full of lighting gear, perhaps. If you are shooting a SAG-AFTRA signatory film, which lets you use actors represented by local talent agencies, then you have to abide the the terms of the contract with SAG. This may require a minimum rate for your talent; it also requires you use talent for no more than 8 hours a day or you pay overtime. And production design plus wardrobe can be very cheap or very expensive. I now nothing about this film and can’t guide you here.

A good 30 second to 1 minute skit?

Be a door to door salesperson trying to sell obsure objects no one would ever buy. Focus on one thing, then as the person you're talking to tries to get you to leave, mention other stupid things you could sell. Break a leg!

Why does 1 page script equal 1 minute movie?

It's not that it does, but rather that Hollywood wants it to.That is why they want 12-pt Courier (I use Courier Prime) with specific margins on the page.  They want it as close to 1 minute/page so they can judge the length of the final product by page length. Courier is a mono-spaced font. A T takes up as much space as an I.Here are six Ts and six Is in Quora's standard font:TTTTTTIIIIIIIn courier, the six Is would take up the same space as six Ts, but Quora doesn't preserve fonts it seems. They don't want your four hour epic.  They want to judge first by weight/number of pages if you need to go back to editting. It makes it easier for them.

What are some good ideas for a sad short film?

You say you want to make a “meaningful” film. Meaningful sad films are about the characters’ response to something sad, not about their sorrow or the sorrowful events as such. You say you have to make it all by yourself. This is a peculiar constraint, and the people who suggest you get a screenwriter are responding to that peculiarity. Poetry, painting, writing symphonies and many other art forms beckon the solitary artist, but film is not particularly suited to being created in solitude. Still, if that’s what you must do, the artistic answer is straightforward: find the topic, situation and idea that you are most afraid of and make a film about that. Write dialogue about which you think, “Wow! I can't actually say that!” Wear clothes that make you shudder. Put yourself in a situation (FAKE IT: IT’S A MOVIE, DON’T RISK HURTING YOURSELF OR DAMAGING PROPERTY, IT’S NOT NECESSARY) that fills you with dread. Engage with that dread, and make it beautiful and you will have a meaningful film. It will surely be meaningful to you, and if you decide to share it, it may well be meaningful to others.
