How To Write A Paper About Studying Literature

What to consider in the study of Literature?

Literature is a really broad topic. Things to consider are Style, Plot, Antagonist, protagonist and essay wrting skills. If you are considering literature you will be writing lots of essays.

What are the values that we can get from studying literature?

A lot of good answers already.

The primary value of literature is its ability to explain the human heart. All of the other benefits of literature run a distant second. While it take years to really know a person through a relationship - platonic or otherwise, literature distills humanity into words. It is focused and framed perhaps, but so is most people's reality. Literature teaches us what it means to be human ourselves and what it means and has meant to other people. As William Faulkner said, all good writing is based on "the human heart in conflict with itself."

Some of the most interesting lessons are about the continuity of the human heart. You can read about how technology and innovation is destroying the human spirit and "speeding up the world" from Crime and Punishment in the 1860's. Thomas Carlyle wrote about "celebrity" (my word, not his) in On Heroes and Hero Worship in the 1840's. He talks about human beings innate need to elevate average person to the level of a deity in order to understand our own values.

It gives me solace to know that great individuals aren't gone, just our perceptions of them are and humanity does not change. Greatness is in the everyday and sits in everyone - waiting.

Why do we study literature?

Personally I think it is to see how writers have used language and language techniques create situations, emotions, dilemmas etc. When we read a piece of literature we don't fully appreciate the techniques that have gone into a piece of writing that make US feel a certain way. Its not just a case of throwing a few words together, there is a real skill behind it, to engage the reader.

Literature can take us to another place that we would not be able to imagine alone, or through remnants of the past discovered through archaeology. It transports you to another world, brings history alive and demonstartes the power of language.

Literature also tells you something about the political and socio economic circumstances at the time of writing, and may give you an insight into the writers personal views and opinions. Dickens particularly focused on the socio economic cirsumstances, all of his novels focus on society, society's views on women and the divide between rich and poor. When you consider the messages behind many of his novels you get the impression of someone who can see the inequalities and the injustice in society. Look at how he portrays the characters, Estelle and Miss Haversham, both Pip and Estelle pawns in Miss Havershams game, based on her status and psychological dysfunction. The important thing here is that she was ABLE to do it, his sister willingly sent him there, and he didn't have a say.

Every time you come accross an issue like this, you can ask yourself, WHY did the author show us that, what is he trying to say?

THAT is why we study literature IMO.

What is the importance of studying literature?

A)- the most important goal of literature and its studyin' is that it provides "happiness" to readers of various cultural backgrounds, exactly as critics states it.
Readers finds it joyful to read tragedy, comedy or any work of fiction even it is of a tragic theme.

B)- literature sometimes works as a historical chronicle. For example, Shakespeare wrote many historical plays depicting the "real" political and social state of Britain at different periods of time. for example, he wrote " HenryIV", "HenryV", "Henry VI", "Richard II" and many more. Hence, literature can easily show you a piece of your land's history and make it easy for you to learn incidents by heart, instead of learning them from some dull and monotonous history book ;)

C)- literature provides us with moral values as it deepens good attitudes inside us. It shows you wrong and right, evil and good and so forth.

D)-Literature inspires people and works as a guide or a "map" showin' people how to live their lives in the right way and make the ultimate use of them.

What does it mean to study literature?

Studies in literature are akin to studies in sociology, culture and anthropology. You will find in certain literatures the mores and beliefs of a culture, from ancient theologies and cosmogonies in texts such as the norse Elder Edda, or the principles of court and religion in the 16th century Chinese classic Journey to the West, or achieve a glimpse of rural Scotland in the romantic-era in the poetry Robert Burns... early American civilisation in Walt Whitman... critiques of early Renaissance capitalism in Ben Jonson's Volpone... a study of the Irish troubles in Seamus Heaney's North... For me studying literature is observing the world (whether it be critically, admiringly, or passively) through the eyes of another person in a different position. Look at a novel such as the House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday, released in 1969 and championed for its significance to Native American Anthropology... Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, a novelist writing amidst a flourishing jazz scene in America (Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker etc) whose improvisational techniques were adopted by Ellison in his experimental approach to novel writing... Arthur C. Clarke, a scientist-cum-novelist whose science-fiction exhibited uncanny extrapolations... a book (or literary product) is the product of a person experiencing the world and channeling it, purposefully or no, onto paper, and thus it is inextricably the product of the culture wherein it gestated, and for that it is valuable, for in no other form can these perceptions be qualified.

How do I study for the 10th ICSE exam in English literature?

LOTS of people will tell you lots of things but frankly speaking ICSE English is not a simpleton thing, scoring in other subjects is far simpler than scoring in English, simply because ICSE English curriculum is the best in the country at its level and it is what makes ICSE stand out from other boards , well I can give u SOME pointers for ur preparation. In literature paper (i.e PAPER 2) You should be thorough with the text of whatever story or play you are preparing, and by thorough I mean u should basically remember the entire jist of every chapter along with the exact lines from the text in paras of key plot points or where u feel something important is happening in the story , same goes for your plays. If preparing Shakespeare make ur own notes, write the importance and characterization of each character from ur perspective and how u find he/she plays an important role in development of the plot. Discuss with ur English teacher the importance of each scene and its relevance to the wider world of the play, and MOST IMPORTANTLY KEEP IN MIND SHAKESPEARE WAS CONSIDERED THE GREATEST PLAYWRIGHT for a reason each segment of his plays highlighted some social problem in his era and yes questions are asked in that context too, so try to understand if the lines refer or allude to any such point. While writing answers be PRECISE don't beat about the bush blabbering won't help in ICSE English if the person correcting ur answer is proficient, write to the point answer and expand and quote lines directly from the text they'll earn u credit and make an impression in the examiner's mind.PAPER1 is relatively easier contact ur English teacher and ask her to suggest some essays, letters and comprehension, practice them then show it to ur teacher and take his/hers feedback to improve on ur essays and then for grammar u can practice from various guide books available only after consulting with ur teacher,of course. JUST DON'T LOSE HOPE OR BECOME TOO Overconfident.HOPE THIS HELPS U, With a bit of a smart work my strategies helped me score 95 in ICSE English , there even have been people who scored 100.ALL THE BEST PREPARING.(P.S U can practice workbooks by XAVIER AND PAMELA PINTO if u like)(Pls upvote if u found this useful)
