I need to write an introduction speech for my English class, but we aren't allowed to start it off with the typical "Hello, my name is X and this is about me". What is a way to start it?

I would recommend watching “TED” talks to see how they open a speech or a talk. Which will lead you in the right direction. One key detail to use is the power of three. Use this for your title, separate your paper in three’s (intro, body, conclusion).Even though it doesnt have to be, you can start with an emotional statement or a statement that evokes emotion. Talk about something your are familiar with, use it in a storytelling methond, and speak in a conversation manner. Aim to say something memorable, so stick to the 18 min rule, paint a picture, and stay in your lane.People who are genuinely passionate about their topic make better speakers. They inspire their audiences in ways that nonpassionate, low-energy people fail to do, when you are passionate about something you can’t help yourself from thinking about it, acting on it, and talking about it with other people. It’s very difficult to electrify an audience without feeling an intense, meaningful connection to the content of your presentation.Hope that leads you in the right direction for a great opening statement. good luck

How can I improve my speech and English writing skills?

When I first started learning English, my teacher told me,“The more you listen, the better you'll be to speak. The more you read, the better you'll be able to write.”This philosophy has worked for me. And I'm sure it’ll work for you, too.To improve how you speak, listen. Listen to podcasts and the radio. Watch TV shows and movies in English, preferably with subtitles. Try to understand how certain words and rules of grammar are used. Also, jot down new words and google their meanings later. Now, only listening isn't going to be enough. You'll also have to practise. Find someone who speaks English fluently. Speak with them and ask them to correct you when you're wrong. Even at times when you can't find anyone to speak with, speak to yourself in front of the mirror and try to find your own mistakes. The idea about the mirror sounds absurd, but it does work. Also, once you are comfortable about speaking, participate in as many public speaking events as you can. Initially, the fear of getting humiliated and insulted in public will try to stop you. Fight it. Speak. And slowly, you'll improve. To improve how you write, read. Read as much as possible. It doesn't really matter what you read; newspapers, web articles, fiction, nonfiction, yada yada. Just read. Once again, try to figure out how words are used and how the rules of grammar are applied. Google the meanings of new words that you come across. Now, to actually improve how you write, you'll have to practice. Aim to write at least 150 words daily. While you write, make sure you use the new words you encountered while listening and reading. Try to use different concepts of grammar, as well. Get your English language teacher to check what you've written at least twice a week. Your teacher will correct you. If he/she doesn't, ask them to correct you.Keep listening, reading, speaking and writing. It's going to be tough in the beginning, don't get frustrated. Keep going. Remember, improvement takes work. If you put in the work, slowly but surely, you'll improve. All the best.

Help with my english speech on animal cruelty?

Hi,
I too am against animal cruelty.

My three ideas were...

- animals commonly being used for experimentation and more would be extinct and it would disrupt the whole food chain because the predators wouldn't have their usual prey, and if the predator can't find another food source, he too will starve and eventually die.

- Most religions don't support animal cruelty.
visit for more info: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/animals/

- Animal cruelty is inhumane. As humans we are supposed to care for all species since we are the most knowledgeable and dominant species.

You should mention somewhere the types of animal cruelty. Such as, animal experimentation, animals for entertainment, hunting &eating and human-animal hybrid embryos.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I have to write a 'Rant' for my English class. Any subject ideas?

"Politically Correct" language vs "good manners" might be a good topic.

Sometimes people confuse what is good manners with some sort of "requirement" to be "politically correct." For example, in a response to a question in Yahoo! Answers, a responder wrote, "Don't tell us you voted for that know nothing, do nothing Obama doofus? You'll find out what a loser he is when he runs this country into the ground."

If the responder is cautioned, "It is bad manners to refer to the President-Elect of the United States of America as a "know nothing, do nothing . . . doofus," does that mean that what the responder said is politically incorrect? Or is it just shockingly bad manners? And if a person has preconceived ideas about the future effectiveness of an elected official, is there a way to express it while maintaining good manners? Is "politically correct" speech required to do that?

My English is very poor. What can I do?

Dear Friend, This answer is going to be a bit analytical and uplifting. So, let's start with something very surprising.“ Everybody knows English. A lot of English... No Matter what!”So, what's different is of course… our size of vocabulary, capacity to hold conversations, ability to use it for a variety of applicable areas… and so on.Still Surprised? Don't be, yet!NOWLet's examine a normal day in our life and how penetrated English is in all of it:Get… Set… Go!AlarmPhoneTimeSnooze(Tooth)BrushToothpasteShampooTrimmer(Hair) BrushHair DryerMake-upTiffinBusCabDriverTicket“Change”StopSignalTrafficElevator/LiftFloorSchoolOfficeClassDesk/CabinTeacherBossMeetingNotesSyllabusWorkflowTaskAssignmentScheduleTimetableClientLoginLogoutAttendanceParkingLateComputerPenPaper“Leave”LunchCanteenCoffeePlate…. Enough is enough!English follows you…even haunts… no matter where you go!So, What's your point, Ahmed?Well, it's very simple and this:You… I… All of us… already know A Lot of English. An awful lot, I might add.Ok, ok… Agreed! What's next?Next is even simpler.Try to focus on two important things:Integrate more and more English into your life and lifestyleSlowly but steadily, shift the focus from our native language to English. Because, as a matter of fact, 60–70% of our daily thinking AND conversation is pure English! Now. . .A Digital Solution to DigiFans:YouTube is now full of short-films, Web series, and even many Episode ‘thing’.No matter what the parent language of such videos, every 3rd sentence, on average ,is in natural English. And, by the way, who wouldn't want to like our Mithila Palkar from Girl in the City?Anyway, a few such Youtube Names:Shitty Ideas Trending (SIT)Girl in The CityMensutra, the “Bang On” Channel!Sandeep Maheshwari.. sessions… and many more. . .subject to search! My Point:English is already integrated into our system of life and society in a great way. All we have to do now is … conciously and deliberately look for areas to expand it so that we become more and more comfortable with all of it.That way, the Weak-English become Strong-English…and Stronger become the Excellent-English… as simple as that!I earnestly request my readers to try this Methodology for a while and the result will definitely take care of itself.-Ahmed, The Curious Being.
