If a rapper was stupid enough to include lyrics that are sufficiently detailed to link him/her to a real crime, then those lyrics potentially become evidence. But most lyrics aren’t particularly detailed.Second, most rap lyrics are just boasting and storytelling (exaggerating past acts or even making things up to create a persona), and claiming that you’ve engaged in vague acts without any identifiable details (“I shot someone,” “I made lots of money selling drugs”) isn’t going to be enough to charge someone with a crime unless there’s additional evidence of wrongdoing that the police are already aware of.Third, there are statutes of limitations. Murder has no statute of limitations, and rape sometimes does not, but other crimes generally can’t be charged if they’re not prosecuted within a few years.
