Were our founding fathers not immigrants? Was this economy not built on slavery: African + Chinese? Yes, it was. Back then agriculture was a huge source for $. Did Irish immigrants not build the North East of America? A huge percentage of our doctors are Indian, scientists are Chinese, athletes are African + European.
Why does our media insist us on hating immigrants?

B. welcomed reform groups that wanted to assist them with social problems.

How did american schools americanize the new immigrants in late 1800s?

Their main function at that time was to teach the American language, culture, and traditions so that children would grow up having the knowledge and abilities required to participate in a "democratic industrial society". (At this time Native American children were sent off to Government boarding schools, at which they were forced to give up their language, dress, culture and traditions.) It should be noted, however, that there was a great deal of debate at that time about exactly what to teach, whether all children should be taught the same things, and even whether certain groups of children (e.g. African-Americans, Native Americans) should be allowed to attend public schools with white children.

In the early 1900s, public education moved away from a focus on academics and began to focus on providing vocational skills that would prepare children for work (keep in mind that it was "normal" then for kids to have only a few years of schooling before entering the workforce at a young age). Thus English proficiency was no longer a must for succeeding in school.

Note that the bilingual education debate is about as old as the American public school system. The second link (below) will take you to a page detailing the history of the debate and each side's arguments.

See the links provided for more information, or you can get the book "School: The Story of American Public Education", which is the companion volume to the PBS series of the same title.

Native Americans: Your opinion on immigration?

Good evening, If a person has ever read the answers I have posted or read my bio they know where I stand on immigration. Not bragging, I do not have just a "little" Nez Perce bloodline, mothers family came from the "Hinmaton Yalaktit "Joseph Band and fathers family came from " Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt" Chief Timothy the Alpowa Band, I included their Americanized names. I appreciate differences of opinion mainly if it continues to shows respect to the other person.

To get to my opinion, I have nothing against immigration considering it has in no way affected myself or my family whatsoever. Most of my family members have the same out look but not all. I have stated more than enough times I know there is a direct link to the Indigenous of Mexico. In my language we have a word for the Mexican people. I read in this forum it is a lie but if in fact my tribe had never interacted with the Mexican people we would not have a word for them in my native language.

I could go more into this but this question is about immigration now so I won't. To add, today my 10 year old nephew asked why there is so much controversy on immigration, why are some peoples opinion so negative towards people of a different race ! I told him to remember this and do what is right. Good luck on your project..

How can anyone invoke the Native Americans as a pro-immigration argument?

It is a classic contrast of values. Liberals value fairness and humanity, conservatives fear. What surprises me is liberal friends posting this apparently without realizing or caring how conservatives will interpret it.

Do American liberals believe that white immigrants should be guilty for the eventual conquest of the Native Americans?

First, I would like to ask what is the relevance of asking about ‘American Liberals.’ The fate of the Native Americans is not a partisan question. It is a historical question, and therefore has nothing to do with conservative or liberal affiliations. My personal assessment is that:White immigrants are definitely guilty for the eventual conquest of Native Americans. There were many leaders of that age who had explicitly genocidal views towards Indians, the reservations were practically concentration camps, and the cruel mistreatment of the American Indians is undeniable.BUT...There are many mitigating factors at play here. In a competition between a technologically advanced culture and a comparatively primitive culture, the outcome is obvious. There is no scenario in which the Native Americans could have survived intact. The only question is whether their assimilation would be peaceful or violent. (It could be both at times, but it was mostly unpleasant.)Most of the deaths of Native Americans occurred by disease, and most of those deaths occurred when diseases spread from South America into North America. There was no way the Europeans could have prevented these deaths, even if they felt like it, because there was no way they could simply quarantine two entire continents. The deaths by disease are tragic and horrifying but also inevitable and nobody’s “fault.”At this point, pretty much everyone will recall the story about white people deliberately spreading smallpox infected blankets. There is no evidence this ever happened. We have maybe two confirmed cases in which some asshole suggested it, but no evidence it was ever actually done. The Native Americans were not helpless victims. They were often violent, lived in a state of constant hostility (even with each other), and they were notoriously cruel to captives. The idea that they were all just a bunch of ‘noble savages’ who lived in harmony and painted with the colors of the wind is straight-up nonsense. In reading about the horrors Natives inflicted on whites they captured (especially in the Southwest) I can completely understand why Europeans would have been enraged by their conduct, and I can’t blame them for reacting with violence. If I were in their position, I would have done the same thing.

How did the Native Americans view the Chinese during the 1800s?

We, Comanches were witness to the building of the railroad through Oklahoma and had interaction/proximity to Chinese men on the railroad and in laundries in and around the turn of the century.Because we were not privy to U.S. immigration policy, according to my elderly relatives, the lack of Chinese women was a topic of much discussion, since women are vital to Comanche culture and not left out of any venture. Since, to us, they appeared to be part of white culture, in our language that’s how we refer to them. So the word for a Chinese person in Comanche is “White Man with a Scalp Lock”. I hope that gives you a general picture of out interaction.
