How Would Someone Who Takes Anti Psycotics Be In Shape

Are antipsychotics safe medications in your opinion?

I do not feel they are but when someone has schizophrenia and is relapsing not sure what to do, I know form a close relative being on them that they definitely do cause brain shrinkage which is manifesting in short term memory loss and difficulty with concentration

Only a very small percent of people get tardive dyskinesia

antidepressants cause permanent brain damage to the neurotransmitter receptor sites.

if you have schizophrenia see this thread I did on helping it naturally

Is it possible to be in very good shape while on antipsychotic medication?

Some drugs in this class produce a lot of weight gain, others not. The ones that are associated with less weight gain may have other side effects, though, so there is no easy answer. You should be discussing this with your doctor, it’s a significant health problem. And he or she should check for diabetes and other metabolic problems, and lay out for you what alternatives are available, and the risks and benefits of changing meds.

What happens if someone who does not have schizophrenia takes an antipsychotic?

I have used a few and I'm not schizophrenic:Clozapine: not by far a typical antipsychotic (in fact the exact opposite), makes you EXTREMELY sleepy. Also mellow and stuff doesn't get to you at all, it makes you pretty calm and functional if you're kind of anxious (not any kind of anxious of course, that's your shrink's decision). Makes you very fat too but that's a bit off-topic. The sleepiness, even during the whole day was really bothersome. I used a 50mg dose which is not really an ideal dose for an actual schizophrenic though, it's kinda low. Takes away pretty much any suicidal ideation you might have for some reason. It's THE most effective drug in schizophrenia.Amisulpride: I'm using it now. The dose is a bit closer to the one for schizophrenia (200mg a day). Makes me more outgoing actually, and maybe a bit calmer. It may be because I have Asperger's though and every autist of sorts is a bit hypersensitive to stuff.Risperidone: Only took once, for curiosity and because I was really on edge emotion-wise that particular day (I have access to a lot of free samples of lots of drugs). Made me sleepy and pretty peaceful. Makes people with really short fuses much more manageable and mellower in my experience (as a prescriber).Asenapine: Don't know why but this made me disphoric, sleepy but not calm in fact kind of nervous, and when I went to sleep it was very disturbed sleep and not refreshing. Also when awake unable to stay still (acathysia). I really tried but was horrible. As for the typicals (haldol etc.), it would be like someone else already said: emotionally blunt, unmotivated, don't care about anything and all that. Kind of like a zombie. This is partly what made people in sanatariums in the old days be weird and zombie-like. But you would feel these kinds of things a bit less the more you used it though, and depends on the dose. It's necessary sometimes. I know they can be bad because I'm a Neurology resident and we sometimes have to deal with severe motor side effects of these drugs, but almost all medications in the market have some kind of scenario where they're better than not using anything, really.Obs. I was prescribed every one of these drugs at some point in time, the only one I ever took any as self-medication was the one time I took Risperidone.

Antipsychotics cause me extreme lack of motivation, but without them I am crazy.?

I am in a catch 22. I take the antipsychotics, and they make me so unmotivated I can t even take a shower, cook, or clean my house. I have bipolar, and without them I am always depressed, and occassionally get mania & psychosis. I tried the antidepressant-mood stabilizer combo for a number of years, and did not find anything that worked. Pls dear God..I hope someone out there can help me.. I am going to visit my bf in Oregon soon, and I am sure I will be embarrassed bcs I have a hard time even taking a shower. I cant stand this. One doctor added Wellbutrin as some people get more energy with it, but it's not working. I'm so tempted to quit them. Please help!!

Antipsychotics reduce the activity of dopamine. Could they make a non-psychotic person depressed?

They can make anyone depressed. This is a well-established drug risk of antipsychotics. Do understand, these drugs do not have some sort of special effect on persons said to be experiencing “psychosis”. There is nothing physically specific to the idea of “psychosis”, either—it can entail a heterogeneous variety of physical and psychological dynamics. It is a psychosocial concept rather than a biological or neurofunctional one.On the other hand, antipsychotics have the same drug actions no matter who takes them or why. The other variables, like those particular to individual makeup and functioning, are a big part of what shape divergent outcomes. Depression is a common effect of these drugs. Antipsychotics do not ‘anti-psychose’—they lobotomize, which may or may not diminish or stop experiences being labeled as a psychosis. It is no surprise, then, that antipsychotics cause all manner of debilitating neuropsychological effects. Depression is cited in manufacturers’ prescribing information packets as being one of the topmost reasons patients using antipsychotics dropped out of their clinical trials. This is a problem for use in people considered ‘psychotic’ and everyone else. Experiences labeled as “psychosis” do not make antipsychotic use any safer or less likely to involve undesirable effects.Something worth expounding a bit here, though, is that “depression” is like “psychosis—it is a psychosocial concept with no hard physical boundaries. At what point drug effects like apathy, lethargy, sedation, anhedonia, amotivation, sexual dysfunction, or sleeping problems become a “depression” is debatable and is treated differently from one study and research paper to another (which complicates making sense of drug effect statistics, furthermore).

How do psychiatric medications work?

Antidepressants and antipsychotic medications like prozac, abilify, risperdal, zyprexa, clozaril, and so on...
How do they work? I think it has something to do with neurotransmitters but I'm not sure... could someone please explain it to me?

Which antipsychotic medication causes least weight gain?

I was recently prescribed Seroquel for having nighttime hallucinations, hearing voices in the day and having rapid mood changes and changing personalities. The doctor is very basic and next week, I'm seeing someone more in depth. Each month, I grow worse and am willing to try Seroquel.

My major concern with Seroquel, being 26 years old, being somewhat fit (5'8" and 165lbs.) and having a great pair of lungs, is Seroquel's reputation of rapidly increasing blood sugar, cholesterol and weight. I want to try my best to not exceed the weight I should. Maximum for me should be 180lbs. seeing at one time, I was that when I powerlifted.

Anyone know if I keep on my "oatmeal in the morning, vegetables and chicken in the afternoon and pasta and whatever else during the evening diet", I will remain at a stable weight? My father took the same medication and he got up to 300 mg in a day. I'm looking to keep it at 150mg. or lower. I don't care to be on this medication forever, and don't want to be another statistic in American society, but also.....I dont' want to wake up every other night seeing wires strapped to my bed.

Any serious serious feedback from well experienced anti-psychotic drug victims would be of great help
