In 1994, just after the fall of communism in Russia, I was fortunate to travel to Ishim, in the Tyumen oblast. While there, another American and I were invited to visit a collective farm about an hour away. The villagers heard we were in the area and wanted to visit with us. We met in the farm director’s office, with Kathy and I seated at a table, backs to the wall, and the villagers arranged around the office.They asked all sorts of questions. Did I own a home? What was it like, Was I in debt (I explained about mortgages and car loans)? What is the price of meat? How often do we eat meat? What is medical are like? What is education like? Just dozens of questions about everyday life.There was one older (maybe 60s) gentleman in the corner, who may have asked a question, but mostly kept quiet. Toward the end he spoke up. I asked the translate to translate his words as exactly as possible because he seemed a little emotional.“I was the principal of the school here in the village for 30 years, and I was a teacher as well,” he started. “I taught my students that American children often went to bed hungry. I taught them that American children had no shoes. I said that American homes had dirt floors, and that our hospitals were far superior to the hospitals in the United States. These things I taught all my students. And I now realize that, for 30 years, I lied to all my students.”(I realize some of those conditions exist in the U.S. But it was clear he was speaking of the entire country. I had a shortwave radio with me, and I had problems picking up BBC or Voice of America that far in the middle of Russia. They had nothing but the newspapers published in the country and the textbooks they were given.Censorship, rewriting history for control, cutting off access to any messages except those approved by the government, is devastating. And it goes on all over the world.

Mallorca, Spain.This small island off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean is everything you need in a country compacted into a island smaller than Bermuda. I highly recommend staying in Palma for a few days, If you like Miami then you will love this city. If you’re on a budget, there’s a pilgrimage path around the island that takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days to walk, or you can rent a car and drive the island. If you wanted you could drive the entire island, full circle in under 12 hours. This pilgrimage is one I have set as a personal goal as it has a massive sentimental value to me. But that’s another story. here’s a map to better reference:The biggest and best places to hit is Palma de Mallorca, where your plane or ferry will land. Then Soller is an amazing coastal town with an jaw-dropping port and mountain range. Peguera is also a fantastic coastal town to chill out and grab some lunch. Going up that North-Western coast is a must. Riddled with olive groves, mountain side estates, bustling ports and coastal mountains it may just change your life, I know it did for me.Cap De FormentorOnce you hit Cap de Formentor, take in the site then traverse over to Cala Ratjada. traversing this way brings you from the coastal mountains and forests to deserts and beaches. From Cala Ratjada you can visit the drach caves.Drach CavesThen visit Llucmajor for premium leather products before heading back to Palma. This trip is something that has forever stuck with and I highly recommend you take this trip.Coastal MountainsWhen I visited Mallorca I was in a really shitty time in my life, I just lost $25,000 for my parents and I was drinking heavily and began smoking cigarettes. I met my parents here and we rented a car then drove a circle around the island (counter-clockwise) for four days. It was a sort of rehab for me. Once we completed this tour, my relationship with my parents was better than ever and I stopped smoking, cut down on drinking immensely and began to follow my true dreams.
