Do I have to worry about custom duties when I bring in a DSLR to India?
Hi All,This is my questions as I can’t type this question with limit of 250 words.I am travelling to India from New Zealand on my Indian passport. It is my first trip back home so I am bit confused. I have booked international flight ticket from NZ to Mumbai, and separate ticket from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. I have two questions;(i) I bought 7-8 jackets for my family members and friends. Do I have to show the jackets to Custom officers at Mumbai or anyone at Ahmedabad? I'm sure if I convert price of all the jackets to INR from NZD, it will be higher than Rs. 50,000. Do I have to pay any charge?? One of my friend told me to take the tag off from the jacket.(ii) I bought new DSLR camera here last month for my own personal use which I am taking it with me in my carry on luggage, but I have another simple camera that I bring here with me 3 years back. My old camera has video recording and other normal features. I want to give that camera to my parents. So, can I carry both cameras at the same time? Will I face any problem/questions at Mumbai or Ahmedabad for carrying two camera?Thanks

Once i carried 4 iPhone 5s (one was mine and the other three for my friends), 1 samsung s4 mini (for a friend) and two laptops (one was mine and one was for a friend).(PS-UNPACK ALL THE PHONES. IF THEY SEE ALL PACKED, THEY MIGHT THINK YOU ARE GOING TO SELL IT)I kept one iPhone and samsung in my hand carry, other two iPhones in my pocket, one packed inside the luggage. I put my macbook in my laptop bag and the other samsung laptop in the luggage.After collecting my luggage from the Delhi Airport, i went straight to the customs and exited without any issue.Tricks:Don't be nervous while exiting, leads to suspicion :PDuring the security check, keep two phones in the tray (their are lots of people who keep two phones these days, so no one will ask you why two phones).keep one in your hand bag (no one will ask you about it)(PLS DON'T SEND YOUR TRAY AND HANDBAG TOGETHER :P)keep one in your luggage bag (PS-double lock your luggage bag if you have a mobile or laptop in it)you can carry two laptops just the way i did (or more if you are smart and daring :p)
How can I bring a sealed iPhone X from the USA to India without paying custom duty?
It depends on your luck. Sometimes a customs officer will pick on it and make life miserable but some times they usually let you go.The general norm is 1–2 items will usually be allowed without much issue.
Has anyone from Canada ordered from the Australian websites: Sabo Skirt or Little Lace?
I really like the stuff online for these stores and would love to order from there but I had a problem when ordering from TopShop in the UK before and got charged $60 duty. Has anyone ordered from either of these two stores? Did you have to pay duty? If so, how much? Are the prices on Sabo Skirt Australian? Thanks a lot!

Yes, there's a possibility that you will get charged customs duty when the item is shipped from Japan to you. In order to know if there's a duty, you'd have to look up the item in the Harmonized Tarriff Schedule - it's a large, somewhat complex document that takes some practice to find the right description for your item. About 65% of items have no import duty. One of the highest import duties is on clothing. You can find the HTS on-line to check if you want. There is also a $5 customs/border patrol fee for any item that has an import duty, which would be added to the fee that you owe. "most of what is sold here comes from Asia" - perhaps. But everything sold in the US has already cleared customs and the US distributor has already paid any customs duty owed. That's why their prices are higher than in Japan :).
My friend sent iPhone 7 from Dubai to India as a gift, is there any kind of charge that I have to pay?
The courier people will deliver it at your doorstep. Just sign as its taken as proof of delivery. You may tip the courier guy or just say thanks and don’t pay anything. Enjoy using your new iPhone.
Having surgery but still called in for Jury Duty. What should I do?
I would physically visit the court that summoned you for jury duty and have some information with you - over the phone is nowhere near as effective as in person, face to face. Visit, but be thoroughly prepared for your visit. Have a copy of the first or a new letter of excuse from your doctor with you, and the letter must be on the doctor's office's stationery - include a business card from the doctor that has the office phone number and fax number on it. If doctor has a cell phone number and will give that, include it, as well. Be sure the doctor has in the letter that the surgery you will be having is medically necessary and cannot be rescheduled. If it isn't too personal, there should be diagnosis codes from ICD-9 included and a brief history of your issue and why this surgery is necessary and NOT ELECTIVE. This should include when doctor made the decision to operate. The court may ask doctor to fax over a copy of your chart notes - just be sure that everything is kept confidential because of HIPPA laws. Also before you go, get the name and if possible the business card for a contact person in central scheduling at the hospital who will be at the hospital the day you are going to visit the court. When you go to the court, take with you the name of the hospital where the surgery is to be performed, their phone number, the direct number and name of the contact person at the hospital who handles scheduling for surgeries (central scheduling) and their business card. Volunteer to serve as a juror at a later date because serving is your obligation. If you don't serve and just ignore the papers you may be arrested - not sure if it is the law in every state, but it is here in Ohio - its called contempt of court. It is a lot of running around for you to do, but you have to do this kind of work to prove that you are serious about this, that this isn't just an excuse that you made up and having those items - business cards, letters, etc. - proves it to the court. (Do your best to stay calm - you've got enough to cope with with your surgery.) Best of luck to you - both with the court and your surgery.
