I Am Not Sleeping At All

Am i a bad mother for not co-sleeping?

No way does not co-sleeping make you a bad mom. Where they sleep is dependent on what is most comfortable for you and safest for the baby. I just had my son in Janurary and for the first two weeks we slept together on the couch because I couldn't lay down comfortably and he wasnt comfortable in his bassinet but by week two it was getting uncomfortable for me and I had fears of suffocating him in my sleep and so we got him to sleep by letting him sleep in his carseat. After a week of that he actually started sleeping in his crib because that was where he fell asleep the best. And now he is actually sleeping through the night. Co-sleeping with me and my husband was not a good idea for our son because my husband tosses and turns so much in his sleep he would have suffocated or crushed our son. I included a link to the a an article from parenting magazine on the co-sleeping debate to give you more info. But overall not co-sleeping does not make you a bad mom. Its just a matter of personal choice.

Not Sleeping Well - 39 Weeks Pregnant?

HI, 38 weeks here today! due anytime as i'm 3 cm dilatd (that was a week ago though, so prolly more now)- I can't say I do not sleep at all, but its so on and off.. I got up to bed around 9 pm usually, pee a few times before crashing, than up again around midnight to pee, than 1, than3, than 4, than 2 times again in morning. Sometimes it takes a while to fall back asleep. but the worst is when i first get to bed, flipping and flopping from side to side, no comfortable way to rest, belly just hangs there and hurts back soo bad. Than the 20 times I get up, if not to pee, just to rotate as I have indent lines from either undies, jammy pants, now wrinkled shirt hurting, blanket sitting wrong etc.. so i rotate around to get blood flowing around better. It just sucks-nothing Unbearable, as what can one do, but definitely annoying . I just went to half days at work as I can hope to go home and nap, cuz usually i sleep prety good in the daytime. good luck to u, thanks for letting me vent here too! won't be much longer, than u get such a special thing, that not everone gets to have. were lucky we can't sleep, lets face it!

What are the effects of not sleeping for 2 days?

Your mind will feel fuzzy. After only 16 hours of not resting, people have been shown to score the same as persons with a .05% blood alcohol level, so 33 hours will be even higher than that. Your reaction times will be slowed. It is not a good idea to drive due to this. Physically, you may feel exhausted, heavy, or sore. This is from the accumulation of lactic acid and blood in your extremities. Your immune system may be compromised, with sleep deprivation, as any stressor, your body makes increased levels of stress steroid hormones which suppress your immune system.
Sleep is a necessary function for the human body. Type A "go-getter" personalities general function on less. Persons's of very high IQ typically sleep more and exhibit a "night owl" sleep pattern where they will stay up very late but sleep in somewhat. Sleep is necessary for all of your body to recharge; however, your body will recharge in only a few hours of sleep but your mind is what actually requires more sleep. Scientists conjecture that the more intelligent we become, the more sleep we need to "process" all of this information, but with the invention of electricity, humans are getting significantly less and less sleep as we try to wake up earlier and stay up later.
Studies have suggested that people who are well rested (8+ hours of sleep or more) are viewed as more attractive.
Studies have also shown that sleep deprived individuals are more likely to be obese and to die from cancer.
Personally, I have recent;y quit my job and am going to school full time. I've been on break between Spring and Summer semesters for two weeks and have been able to sleep in and I feel amazing. I look better, I have literally no breakouts, and I have been thinking clearer.
Sleep is essential for a multitude of body functions. What will happen from going two days without sleep? You will feel like poo and you will have a "sleep debt" that must be repaid before you can feel normal again (I know this is true, I used to work night shift and go days without sleeping). You will look terrible and your thinking will be off. You'll be more likely to get sick as well.

Am I going to die from not sleeping?

i used to have an obsession where i was terrified that i would die from lack of sleep; i drove myself and my family crazy. i was so convinced lack of sleep would kill me. then i realised you cant die from lack of sleep. literally your body will just shut down anyway and you will fall asleep and even when you cant sleep you go through brief periods of micro sleep which is like your dozing off for a few seconds and then you jolt awake.

i think the more you worry about it, the less you'll be able to sleep. i would stay awake worrying why i couldnt sleep. dont worry about it, everyone goes through periods where they cant sleep properly, there isnt always a reason. just relax before bed, read a book or cuddle up with a pet if you have one and think about nice things in bed. when i cant sleep i think about my favourite tv shows and characters in my head or think about what i want to succeed in 10 years. if you cant sleep, dont stress. you'll fall asleep eventually. you cannot die from lack of sleep unless you have this rare disease called fatal familial insomnia which is really RARE and is genetic so you would know if you had it but its sooo sooo sooo rare, like only 30 families in the world have it. its a disease where you cant sleep at all. dont google is because i did and it terrified me and made my obsession worse. other than that no one dies from lack of sleep. my mum couldnt sleep for 14 years because she had a disabled child who kept her up in the night and she'd only had 2 or 3 hours of sleep and she survived. relax its going to be OK. relax before bed time and enjoy being in a warm bed and thinking nice things. hope i helped :)

Not sleeping the night before surgery bad?

It makes no difference at all. General anesthesia isn't sleep, for one thing, it just looks like it. You will wake up just fine after the surgery.

Why don't I feel tired after not sleeping all night?

Hi Molly. Maybe it is just a part of nature, as if in some form of survival, that most human adults are able to do this. Often, due to stress being in my life, right now I am unable to sleep. The next day I too do not feel tired but often the next night I will end up going to bed an hour or two earlier than I normally would. It is only when I do not sleep for two consecutive nights that I would feel tired ( obviously on the third day). The human body is a weird and wonderful thing!

Richard
ps if you are having this as a continual problem then try heating milk up and having it as a drink. It gives off some chemical (is it a chemical though?) which acts as a fantastic natural sleeping aid!

Why can I not sleep without a sleeping mask?

I hate sleeping without a fan. Even in the dead of winter, I want my fan. If I am sleeping somewhere away from home, I miss it. In fact, the two other rooms I usually sleep in at other people's houses now feature fans because of me. I have woken up when the power goes out because my fan shuts off.

Why am I so in tune with fans? Because I'm used to having one. It's a habit. I am used to the noise and movement of air.

The same goes for my husband. When we started sharing a bed, I thought I would kill him in the night. He was constantly touching me. He was too warm. He was in the way of where I wanted to sleep. 11 years later and now I am not only used to him being there, it is much more difficult to sleep without him in the bed.

I would imagine that your attachment to the mask is the same. Your body has become used to the darkness it creates, the pressure of it against your face, etc. Our bodies like routine. That is why you will find people with bedtime rituals like brushing their teeth, reading for a little while, etc. Doing those things and thinking sleepy thoughts gets them ready to lay down for the night. You are trained to go to sleep when the mask goes on. Without the mask, your body is missing its usual cues that bedtime has arrived.

The only way to train yourself to sleep without a mask is to start sleeping without it. Your body will readjust after a few nights of getting used to the new situation. You may want to spend some time making your room as dark as you can to help. But really, if the mask helps you out that much you don't have to get rid of it. Who cares if you look silly if you're sleeping well.

I am 13 weeks pregnant and not sleeping well at all, any ideas for remedies to fix this problem?

I have tried Benadryl, Unisom, drinking some milk before bedtime, I bought a memory foam pillow, I have tried a hot shower before bed, etc etc. I still wake up many times throughout the night and then once morning comes, it is very difficult to drag myself out of bed due to exhaustion. This is my second pregnancy and I didn't experience any of this with my first one. Please advise me of any ideas you have to help with this or if you have experienced this yourself what you did to get more sleep. No sarcastic answers here please such as wait until you have the baby etc. because that is an obvious solution.

Is it better to sleep for an hour or not sleep at all?

The human sleep cycle is a complicated thing, and it has a rhythm.  The sleeper tend to rise into a "shallower" REM sleep about every 1½ hours, from which awakening is easier.  One hour tends to find the average person in stage 4 sleep, from which awakening is very difficult; in my experience one will be groggy and good for nothing – in fact, still partially asleep – until that full 1½ hour mark is reached.  The three-hour peaks tend to be shallower than the odd-numbered 1½ hour peaks. If brief relief from sleep deprivation, with acceptable functionality on wakening, is the goal, one hour is probably not the right time.  Either catch a 15-20 minute "catnap", or go the full 1½ hours, preferably three. But you can only do this once, maybe twice, before having to sleep long and heavily.  Short sleeps like this heavily deprive the brain of REM sleep (because most of our REM sleep happens later in a full night's sleep); and lack of REM sleep is particularly detrimental to cognitive function, especially memory and judgement. (This is why late-night cramming doesn't work well; REM sleep is the period during which one consolidates memory.)You need your sleep; shortchanging yourself in this area is destructive to body and mind. (And also, if you're doing things like operating heavy machinery or power equipment on sleep deprivation, or a similarly fraught activity such as energetic-materials chemistry, then other people's bodies, not to mention property, are at risk.) Seriously, if at all possible, get your sleep.
