I Am Thinking About Transferring

I am thinking of transferring to MIT. Should I retake the SAT and the ACT?

This really depends upon where you are and how well you are doing. It might also depend upon financial issues such as what you are paying where you are, how much you can afford to pay without taking on debt, and how much it would cost for you to attend MIT (which has need based aid but no merit aid).If you are doing well at a good university, then your best bet might be to work hard to get great grades where you are, and consider MIT along with other schools for graduate work.

If I'm thinking of transferring to Berkeley, would it be bad if I did an internship at a lab at Stanford?

I don’t see why it would be a problem, unless their is a rabid dislike of one school by the other, and one would hope professionalism would admire the diversity of your experience under differing institutions. That said, don’t get off on a wrong foot working in the lab at Berkeley with a comment like ‘Well, that not how they did it at Stanford’s lab…’ Just add up the differing approaches to your best of breed solutions and be prepared to ask why a thing is done in a certain way when it differs from what you may have learned elsewhere.

I am thinking of transferring in two years to Yale but why do they require HS transcripts and any tips?

One possible reason is that they prefer applicants who could have attended Yale, but didn’t due to personal, financial, or other reasons. If you attended a normal college but had Ivy League level scores, then it puts you in front.Another possibility is that they would like to see a progression in maturity. Maybe you were a terrible high school student, but you now understand the value of your education, you excel at academics, and you feel the need to catapult yourself to a more academically-ambitious environment such as Yale.Essentially, they want your transcripts, application, resume, and essays to answer these questions: Why didn’t you go to Yale in the first place? Why are you now interested in going to Yale? What has changed in the meantime?

I'm thinking about transferring to Clemson University...?

I attended Clemson. It's got a beautiful campus, nice buildings, great bus system to the nearby towns, pretty liberal campus (for South Carolina, anyway), some great programs (engineering, nursing, sciences in general), good professors. It's in a pretty rural area, so not a lot of nightlife, but some good bars and restaurants downtown. Strong sports culture. I really liked it there, although I picked it without ever seeing the campus or really knowing anything about it.

I am a Sophomore thinking about transferring to UT and majoring in Economics. However, I have heard that economists do not have a job market. Is this true and why?

This question reflects a generally poor understanding of "job applicant fit" and how the labor market works.  There is no such thing as "economist" unless you actually have the experience and skill set that a typical economist needs for their specific job. So when you talk about the job market for economists or people who have a degree in economics it isn't clear that you have a true sense of how companies make hiring decisions and how they filter applicants for quality and fit.Ultimately it doesn't matter what you study. What you should be focused on are specific types of jobs where you actively develop your skill set and experiences so that you are a good fit. When your resume is looked at you could be any major but if you have the specific tools and experience to do a job then you have an advantage over other applicants regardless of their degree. For example, if you studied economics and want to get into investment banking you really need only two things.  Good grades from a good school and a solid set of internships or other equivalent experience that put you on track to get an offer before you have graduated. If you want to do something like quantitative models then you need to have rigorously defined data and stats skills and some experience so you can confidently talk about how you applied those skills. Figure out what kinds of jobs are out there or what jobs you like and then work hard on molding yourself to be the best candidate for those jobs.

I was accepted into Cornell but I am thinking about transferring into Columbia or Harvard. How difficult will it be for an African American male?

I read through all the answers so far and sad to say, I’m a bit disappointed.I’m at the end of my years at Cornell, on my way to grad school, and also part African American. I can’t give you hard percentages, but I can say for a fact that colleges are always looking for diversity, and race certainly does matter if you are a minority, especially one that is often hurting from the vicious cycle of poverty. It makes the college look good if they can paint a picture of themselves as being more diverse. This may or may not apply as much to transfers because once again, I’m going to grad school, but I will let you in on a secret. Cornell looks glamorous on the outside because it’s an Ivy League, but once you get in, the curriculum is overly rigorous. The high rates of suicide and people going on medical leave here compared to other Ivies might clue you in on what’s really going on, but I think it’s best not to discuss that here.Harvard is more willing to take graduating students at Cornell (as long as your GPA isn’t atrocious) simply because they know they’ve stayed afloat in a more stress-filled and rigorous learning environment, and are less likely to break down on them. So honestly, my best advice to you is to keep your grades up and give it a shot.(This is assuming you have a valid reason for transfer, which is probably the only reason they would consider such a request.)

Thinking about transferring high schools... Please help? :(?

Thanks so much for clicking on this!

Please just read or skim and respond with any advice at all. I'm desperate here.

I am feeling so conflicted lately. I go to a private school in my city, and when I applied in 8th grade I really thought it was the place for me. It seemed really perfect, and has a great education. I left my middle school (where I went to for 9 years) and have slowly gotten more and more depressed. I hate waking up in the morning to go to school, it makes me sick. I hate the kids at this school, they are all really conceited (there's only like, 300 kids total), the grading and class system is difficult for me (they don't give letter grades, so I'm really having a hard time with that). There are four reasons I'm staying: the occasional good day, I already have ties and am scared of starting over again, the education is supposedly really really solid, and I get a laptop there. But I feel miserable sometimes for days and just want to go somewhere else.

OH! And the school I'm looking at transferring has a uniform... here, there isn't one and I might miss my own clothes. I wore a uniform for 9 years though, so I'm used to it I guess...?

My middle school was AMAZING, I loved it and it honestly feels like my home. And it continues into high school if you choose to stay and move to the upper school, which is on the same campus! I applied, but chose my current high school (I got into both). There seem to be so many more opportunities, the classes are smaller and single-sex but the boys still go there. I love chorus, but at my current school (I'm in chorus) I can't do anything else, no newspaper, yearbook, student panels, or anything really. At this school I can. All my friends go there. Tuition is less. I'm torn though, what if I go and it is terrible and I end up hating the high school? What if I end up that weird transfer girl who no one wants to be with?

I'm so lost! I just end up feeling like crying sometimes... my heart feels broken but I don't want to make a mistake. There's no info or advice online.

Could anyone give me some advice, especially if you've transferred schools before? I'll take anything, even if it's just "I think you should just stay" or "I think you should transfer".

THANK YOU!!! So much, if you read all this. :)
