I would like to volunteer as a scribe for blind people. From where do I start with this?

Congrats for your initiative. There is lack of awareness among literates about how one can put to use their writing ability. There are few NGO s who are arranging scribes for students. One such NGO ‘Amrutha Bindu’ in BANGALORE who is doing a wonderful service. The areas covered are karnataka, Tamilnadu AP .One word of caution : its better to do scribe through an ngo rather than entertaining a direct request from an individual unless you know the student personally.link: Amrutha Bindu | For the Needy

Volunteer in Mexico?

I live in Southern California. I will be attending school here and am hoping to find some place where I can go into Mexico, when I have free weekends and what not and help out (in any area). I don't need an organization necessarily; I am able to get there myself. I would like to work on my Spanish, see another country, meet new people and help out. Any ideas?

Volunteering while pregnant?

Here are some resources you can take advantage of to get involved in your community:

www.handsonnetwork.org
www.unitedway.org
www.1800volunteer.org
www.cns.gov

All of these agencies have national affiliations, and you may be able to find a fantastic volunteer opportunity you never knew existed. Any of these agencies will be able to put you in touch with your local volunteer center, who will be able to match you with an opportunity based on your availability or interests....there are tons of things out there, from reading to the visually impaired, to helping seniors or kids with arts & crafts programs to cooking and serving meals to those in need....you name it!

I'd steer clear of an animal shelter, just to be on the safe side. Pregnant women are generally advised to have NO contact with litter boxes while pregnant.

And as a bonus, the volunteering while you're pregnant will fill in a gap on your resume very nicely!

Best wishes to you!! I hope you find a great opportunity to get involved!

What US military branch can I join as a legally blind person?

According to the common US military enlistment standards,Visiona. Current distant visual acuity of any degree that does not correct with spectacle lenses to at least one of thefollowing (367) is disqualifying:(1) 20/40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other eye.(2) 20/30 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye.(3) 20/20 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye. Therefore, if you are legally blind (which is generally defined as 20/200 in your better eye) than you would be ineligible for enlistment. However, if you are only legally blind without correction, and correction does bring you within the standards listed above then you would be eligible for enlistment with any of the military services.Keep in mind that specific jobs have more stringent criteria. So, while you may qualify for some jobs, your choices will be more limited than someone without vision difficulties.AlternativesIf you are ineligible for military service, you may wish to volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), the Coast Guard Auxiliary (CGAUX), or a State Defense Force (SDF).These are congressionally-mandated, state-supported non-military, non-paying, volunteer positions that allow you to support the work of the US military. Their standards are generally much more relaxed when compared to the military.
