Google Maps uses GPS, GLONASS, BDS, QZSS, etc. It uses whatever GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) the phone has inside and most of the time it uses at least two of them simultaneously.How it worksIf a location App wants to use the location service of a phone, it requests the system which grants it access to the location services. It wont matter whether the phone uses GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS, QZSS, etc. What matters is returning location data that the app understands and all those GNSS systems return data that can be understood by apps. Its standard location data whether the system is American, Chinese, Russian or European.The App doesn't have the liberty to discriminate which hardware brand is doing the service it wants. If such a discrimination were to exist, it can only be enforced by the operating system (Android) since it has full access to every piece of hardware in the phone and its the one that decides whether and how it will be used.Why Google Maps has no choiceIt should be also be noted that even though the Google Maps app is developed by the same company (Google) that develops the Android Operating System, Google Maps is an App and the Android System will treat it the same way it treats all other apps. Terms and conditions still apply and no special precoded privileges (if such are there, this would be covert and possibly illegal, a conspiracy by Google).Secondly, the fact that Google only builds the software (the Operating System - Android) in this case, the decision and choice to whether use GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, or any other GNSS system lies with the hardware manufacturer who builds those phones.As of this date (Apr 2018), all major smartphone manufacturers use a cocktail of these GNSS systems. Apple has been building GLONASS in iPhones since 2011 (iPhone 4s). Google, the company in question, built GLONASS in their Google Pixel, Pixel XL in 2015.
