I Am Wondering If My Nose Is Broken

Have you ever had your nose broken?

I sure have. When my son was about 15 months old, I was sitting on the floor playing with him. He hopped onto my lap, giggling. At the exact moment I looked down at the top of his little head, he jumped straight up - and the back of his head hit my nose at full force.I heard a distinct snap and felt faint. The next thing I knew, I was lying flat on my back on the apartment floor, with my son standing over me. He had a puzzled expression on his face, as though asking what on earth is wrong with Mommy?I was afraid to even touch my nose. It didn’t hurt, which I thought was probably a bad sign. After a few minutes I worked up the courage to look in the mirror. My nose was so badly broken that it had turned several degrees to the right, and made my entire face look off-kilter.Thus started my plastic surgery odyssey, in which I learned that this is a very common way to break your nose (and other body parts, too!)My plastic surgeon later confirmed that my nose bones shattered. He had to rebuild my nose from what was left - fortunately, he did a fantastic job and you would never guess today that I looked like something out of a horror movie for six weeks before my surgery.

Long term effects of a broken nose?

I broke my nose a couple days ago. As of now, the bottom half of my nose is numb, the top half i can feel a weird pressure on it, and it's kinda hard breathing out of my left nostril (it's broken to the left). I'm not planning on getting it popped back, since it's hardly noticeable. But I was wondering if it will always be hard to breath out of my nose, and if the discomfort will always be there.

How can I tell if my nose is broken?

If you grab the bony part of your nose (upper half) between two fingers and it feels asymmetric (lopsided), it is likely broken. appearance may be deceptive due to the swelling, it is easier to feel a displacement. Also if you hold the bone and push to the right and then to the left you feel or hear crunching, it is likely broken. Worse than a fracture is a septal hematoma which is a blood accumulation in the center divider of the nose. If you have this, you will have trouble breathing through one or both sides (other things can also cause breathing obstruction). If a septal hematoma is not promptly drained by your ENT doc there is a good chance that your nose will collapse and be forever deformed. A fracture can be reduced by the ENT doc up to two weeks later; a septal hematoma needs to be treated NOW.

Broken nose after MEPS?

I went through MEPS for the Air Force and now I am just waiting for a BMT date. About 6 months ago I fractured my nose and had a small surgery to pop it back into place. It was a very small fracture- it didnt even bleed when it happened. I am just wondering if I should bother telling my recruiter about it, and if they will find out at basic if I kept my mouth shut.

How can I heal a broken blood vessel in my nose?

It is quite common medical procedure to cauterize as the previous answer provided. The procedure is done with cotton-like swabs coated with silver-nitrate crystals. The silver nitrate crystals cause scar tissue formation around the leaky or fragile small blood vessels. On occassion it takes many repetitions to work especially if the blood vessel is large and fragile. In bad cases it might need some minor surgery to actually plug up the blood vessel permanently. When a blood vessel is blocked normally the body establishes collateral circulation around the blocked blood vessels.
