On Saturday morning, Yahoo introduced a new anti-spam measure on their SMTP servers, and goofed. It affects many ISPs who have subcontracted their mail service to Yahoo. So that includes BT (in the UK) and ATT (in the USA), as well as several other big names. It affects Windows users who have Thunderbird as their email client. It doesn't affect other email clients such as Eudora or Outlook. It doesn't prevent plain text messages even those with attachments. It only affects messages composed as HTML. It doesn't affect webmail. It's not yet been solved (at least not for my own ISP). It's definitely NOT a Mozilla problem. The last update for Thunderbird was 10.0.2 dated 2012-02-16. There has been no change to Thunderbird that could have triggered the problem yesterday. Technology news media have been strangely silent about this major denial of service. I'm getting a Thunderbird error "could not connect to server popXXX; the connection was refused"
The error started about 2 weeks ago. I've verified over and over with my ISP that I have the correct settings for the pop server. It also worked fine before this error. I'm aslo getting an error on my Norton Ghost "Cannot connect to the agent on XXXX". The error is telling me the agent is on my computer (XXXX). It started around the same time my Thunderbird stopped connecting. My Norton Internet Security has not found any issues. My computer is new as of January and I'm running XP. Any ideas on what is pissing off my Thunderbird? And do you think my Norton Ghost acting up at the same time is an indication of anything larger?

In Thunderbird....... tools/account settings/ on the left, go down to "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" and click you will see your default settings now go to add and there will be a place for you to put another user name and the server name put the user name that you want to send from after you finish, there will be 2 names in there - say ok and exit Go to the email names in Thunderbird (left side) Click on the name you're going to use. On the right click on view settings for this account In the outgoing server box you will have a drop down menu Choose which one you want to use
