I Cant Afford Vet Care But My Cat Needs A Vet .

Can't afford vet, but my dog really needs to go?

Hi,

I am not going to lecture you about not being able to afford vet care but your dog will have to see the vet or he might die if there is something very wrong. Dogs are expensive and need regular trips to the vet for flea treatment etc.

If you care about your dog maybe it would be worth thinking about putting them up for adoption as they need vet care and at this time your mum and yourself can't afford to provide that, that is the kindest thing to do for them.

Vets can be funny about giving monthly plans if you haven't been before, but ring up anyway and find out.

Are you in the UK? Have you a local PDSA you can ring they do reduced or free vet care for anyone on a low income.

Also the blue cross or RSPCA might help please ring them for advice:)

Dog is sick can't afford vet.?

Just so everyone knows I am a single mother of two who works as a clerk in grocery store and can not afford the vet. No vet will take him unless I have a $100.00 dollars down. I am not stupid and I know what will happen if I can't get him to a vet. I was just praying for something else I could possibly do at home to help him.

My cat has asthma but I can't afford the vet?? What can I do?

Did they break down that price as to what exactly is covered?

Our cat has asthma, she was on a low dose of prednisolone for $15 for 2 months, we had her on antibiotics for a while too, at $18 for 2 weeks to see if we could reduce the inflamation. After that first checkup, the pred and the antibiotics we got her under control. I can't see $350 being justified even if they took x-rays and did the fluid test (sedating her, putting a puff of fluid into her lungs, drawing it out again and checking it for what types of bacteria were in there.).

Go to a different vet, ask for a checkup, ask for them to listen to her lungs, and ask for a course of low dose steroid to see if that improves her. You're looking at LOW cost that way and it's the common way to treat asthmatic cats. Should run you the price of the checkup and $15 for the red pills. Many cats on a low dose of this back off their symptoms to almost normal. Your cat needs help, you need to be active in the question/answer part with the vet.

My cat keeps throwing up. I can't afford to take him to a vet. What could be wrong with him?

My cat was recently throwing up and was ‘not his normal self’ not so lively as usual. He was eating lots of small meals and then just went off somewhere to sleep until he wanted another snack. His coat wasn’t as glossy and he didn’t want to play. I guessed - worms! At this time of year, particularly if your cat goes outside, he can pick up worms in all sorts of ways. I gave him a worming solution - in my case a granular medication mixed with his food - which he didn’t even notice. During the following day or two he was totally different. Back to his old self. I reckon cats should be wormed about twice a year. It doesn’t hurt them, it’s just like taking medicine for constipation. He will pass the worms without any problems and be fine again. Make sure the medicine is for both roundworm and tapeworm - he’ll never know why he feels better but he certainly will.

Found a stray cat, can't afford vet bills... any ideas?

You could try a warm moist environment. That's the best for respiratory systems. Run a hot shower in the bathroom until it is steamy then bring the cat in and pet it for a while.

If it coughs up yellowish mucus, or acts like it is, it has an infection and needs the vet. You might need to intercede before it swallows to see what's there.

It may just have a sore throat. Perhaps they get their version of colds, or it may have been crying for a long time.

The chip check and posters are a good idea. I have a bad feeling though, he's either abandoned or a returnee.

Cats don't really have owners. They have people with homes for them. If you move with the cat, the cat doesn't really move with you. He didn't decide to move and he doesn't want be there. That new place isn't his home. The old one is. If he gets loose within a few weeks of moving, he will go back to his "real" home, or at least try to go there.

Ask around the neighborhood if anybody recognizes the cat and/or if anyone has move out or in recently.

Should people who can't afford to take their pets to the vet be allowed to own them?

Should people who can't afford to take their pets to the vet be allowed to own them?I get to play Devil’s Advocate again…First off, people take their animals to the vet far more than the animal needs to be seen. I know people that average a vet trip a month, and probably spend four hundred dollars each trip for various tests. They also feed their animals “raw”, human quality animal protein, and the dogs are never well. I know the owners are hypochondriacs, but it has crossed my mind that there is some form of Munchhausen’s Syndrome. So some people practice abuse-by-vet.Secondly, after a life time of dog ownership, sixty plus years, I can count the vet visits my dogs have had on one hand. Usually those visits have resulted in the dog being euthanized, either because they were hit by a car (once), or because they had a terminal disease (once), or because they were at the end of their life and would have suffered unnecessarily (once). I vaccinate my own dogs for less than ten bucks, and have stitched them up and treated them for gastric issues and infections. I’ve never lost a dog I treated myself. My last three dogs have all made it fourteen years, and died being active one day and dead the next.I’ve worked for vets, and while I’ve seen one give a goat mouth to mouth and refuse to charge for his services. I’ve also seen people billed thousands of dollars for services where the vet knew the animal was going to die and did unnecessary work.My last point is this. There are a dismal number of animals being put down in shelters. There are “no kill” shelters that accept animals, and if they aren’t adopted within a certain time the animals are transferred to a county shelter where they are all but 100% euthanized. So people with no means to pay for expensive vet bills save lives. In some ways, a rather perverted view I admit, they save more lives than people with money because they keep and love an animal until they can’t afford to save a terminal case. Then they save another animal when the first passes naturally. Again, the number of healthy animals being put down is staggering. So I vote that as many animals are adopted as possible, regardless of financial means. Short of someone that neglects their animals to death, the option most animals face is euthanasia… unless someone chooses to share their home with them.

My cat has diabetes. I can't afford the insulin but I dont want to lose him. Are there any natural options?

I had amazing help and support from the wonderful people at http://www.felinediabetes.com/. Go to the message board there and tell your story. Tell them what kind of food you are feeding your cat and what doses of insulin she is getting - and that it is Humulin. These people have great experience with feline diabetes.

The most important tool you will have, is a blood sugar meter. The folks at the site will guide you as to which ones you can use, and you might be so lucky that someone has one they will sell to you cheap or even give you.

A change in diet can work wonders, but you HAVE TO monitor the cat's blood sugar when you do that! With a change of diet, your cat might well have a reduced need for insulin - thus cutting your costs.

I believe my cat is constipated, and i can't afford a vet bill. Please Help...?

Straining to use the bathroom, as you would know if it happened to you, is an indicator that something is remiss.
He may just be constipated. Try feeding him wet food instead of dry, adding some water to the wet food to ensure it reaches his bowels to help pass the matter through and out.
You could try giving him some grass, which has roughage in it that may be what he needs. Commercial foods do not have much roughage, and often not enough for what a cat needs.
If it does not improve, the problem could be something far more serious, you will need to go and see a vet. Part of owning any animal is accepting responsibly that that animal may need vet care occasionally and giving it - not doing so is a felony offence and you can get jailed for it.
