Is it normal to feel depressed after graduating high school?
It is completely normal. Like you said, for the last 13 years, the public school system is all you've known. It can be very scary and confusing to enter a new chapter in your life, but this chapter can also be very exciting! It can be really hard when all your classmates are going to universities and you're going to a community college, but don't feel inferior because of that. Doing community college first then transferring is a great financial decision, so in the future that will be one less thing to be stressed about. Also, not knowing what you want to major in is 100% normal. The average college student changes their major at least twice during their college years. Few people know exactly what they want to do and stick with it. It's different for everyone. If you're stressing about it, try to relax, and maybe consider taking some online inventories that may suggest categories of careers to think about (after all, you should be aiming for a career, not a major). Mynextmove is a great website that has information like that. College is really cool in the sense that you get to be more independent. I've found that I'm way less stressed in college, and I feel way more freedom because I get to choose what classes I take and when I take them, and most professors don't micromanage you so you can study however you want and for however long you want. It's really freeing compared to the public education system. All that to say, try to find some positives in all this. It can be really challenging to look at a new chapter of your life in that light if it seems like it will be lonely or scary, but it can be great if you want it to be. You're not alone in your thoughts, and I'm sure you'll find plenty of other people who are in the same boat once you start school. Best of luck!
Why does school depress me?
in short, excuse my language, because school fucking sucks.we wake up freakishly early. as teenagers, our brains are literally not ready to think at 7 am. our circadian rhythms are different than adults and little kids, which is why we stay up late and sleep in. We aren't LAZY, we sleep the same amount, we just do it at a different time. But for school, we are forced to wake up, when our brains are being programmed to sleep more.We sit in our chairs and listen to someone talk at us for 7 hours straight. What ISNT depressing about that? We’ve had the same school system since the industrial revolution, where kids were basically taught to go into factories. Luckily theres more research coming out about hands-on-learning and stuff like that.after suffering through the day, we come home, sit at another desk, and do more work for three more hours. We already spent so much time learning stuff, and now we have to do more. Its exhausting, and its impractical. On top of the physical and academic hardships, we have to deal with the ridiculous amounts of social problems and drama. In high school this improves significantly from middle school, but god if it isn't still there. Our adolescent minds want one thing - acceptance from our peers. even us “weird” kids want that. People stress about who likes who, who’s friends with who, do enough people like them. and that is horrible in its own right.School is a terrible system. Learning is fantastic, and I love it, but our current school system is so fucked that instead it literally gives us all clinical depression.
Stressed. Corporal punishment/paddling used at my kid's school.?
For all those that think corporal punishment is illegal in schools…it’s still legal in MANY states--probably close to half of them. It’s legal in my state, BUT the county that I live in has a policy against it (the school board gets to determine if they’ll allow it or not, and if they do, they don’t have to require parental consent for it). My kids have the same problem with not enough time in between classes. They only get 3 minutes (God help them if they need to go the bathroom). Personally, I’d rather them give the students more time between classes and extend the school day by 15-20 minutes, but they don’t listen to me :) At any rate, I got a paddling my senior year in high school (back when they paddled kids on a regular basis). Speaking merely for myself…I didn’t find it particular humiliating, because no one was present other than me, the teacher, and another teacher (their policy was another teacher had to be present). Nor did I did I find it extremely painful. BUT that’s just me, and it could have been because (1) it was the ‘norm’ back then (2) maybe that teacher just didn’t paddle very hard. With all that said--I DON’T think corporal punishment in school should be DISallowed. The schools aren’t like they used to be 20 years ago. The kids are out of control. When my oldest was in public middle school, one of the students called a teacher a “f*cking b*tch” during the middle of class. His punishment--a few days suspension, which wasn’t a punishment at all, it was a ‘vacation’. BUT a situation of 3 tardies is COMPLETELY different.
Do adults relize how much stress teens and kids have ?
I agree. Yes, I'm sure parents have stress and all, but I sometimes don't think that they know how stressful adolescence is. I used to get mad at my parents a lot, because I told them they never understood what it's like being a teenager, which is true in many aspects. I found that my parents contributed a lot to my stress when I was a younger adolescent. But, teens should really cut their parents some slack sometimes. Some teens can be EXTREMELY vicious to their parents, who do so much for them, which might cause parents to cause this stress to their teens.
What are some good ideas to talk to my school counselor if I am too afraid of opening up?
Oh my goodness. The science fair should be fun, not a stress-inducing mind crush. I am guessing you are competitive, or have parents pushing you too hard. It is a school science fair, not a life-changing project where hundreds of lives (or just one) hang in the balance.Pick something you are interested in. It does not have to cure cancer or stop global warming. Anything fun, interesting, and NOT above your abilities or beyond your money resources to do.It is also OK to recreate an project that tests something, or do a variation of it. Scroll through Google, ask about “science projects” in different ways, but connected to your grade level. In life, there will always be projects better and worse than yours. That is OK. The idea is to apply your learning, not create a better pizza. Although I would sign up for that one.If it is your parents, remember that you are adult enough to pick your project, and adult enough to withstand an OK grade. If they freak out, buy them a pizza and smile your way through.Good luck, and try to have fun.
