What are the options in the US after doing a BDS in India? Can I do post graduate and then open up my own clinic or should I give the DDS?

To practise dentistry in USA it is mandatory to get DDS / DMD (both are same) for which passing in NBDE Part-1 exam & obtaining a satisfactory score in IELTS / TOEFL. These are the prerequisites for applying to DDS or DMD coursesIf you have a qualified BDS from India or any foreign country trained & qualified dentist then, alternatively you can apply for MDS certificate courses which is also 2–3 years course, with some stipend (to be verified at each college) and practise dentistry after the course completionAfter MDS, by doing NBDE Part-2, the person can also join DDS at 3rd year and complete it.DDS/DMD are costly courses (say US $ 75,000 per year). MDS is comparatively much cheaper say US $ 20,000 per year.See the other responses of Ms Nipa Sheth & Mr. Evit John who provide additional information. (I tried not to repeat what others have already said-to maintain my own originality)Bear in mind that you have completed BDS in India (so your age will be 22–23 years) then doing DDS means another 4 years = 27 years, then you need to get experience (say 3 years) = 30 years age. Note you have expressed desire or ambitio to settle in USA & USA can UNsettle you in a moment for it is country known for individuals going to court on some silly pretext and sue you for medical negligence …etc. & ensure that you next few generations pay money NOW !!! in hard cash i.e. US $ (USA dollar).USA does not like anyone earning ITS MONEY (refer many court cases, of all those rich people - mainly immigrants to USA, where they were sued of some malpractice or so & made to shell entire generation of earnings). Now compare this libel suits on USA original citizens, such cases are almost NONE. Microsoft pays US $ 1 million in fines, but a Korean Company Samsung pays US $ 1 billion in fines !!! Apple is still “milking & pursuing” Samsung for more fines to be levied !!! It is only recently, Samsung learnt to play the game & sued Applie in their country (Korea) !!! to equalize the loses !!! Where it will go in future - no idea cannot predictAfter BDS what in USA is the common question in http://www.quora.com instead of posting it again & again, why you do not search & read the responses to past questions & then ask something new, so that every one gets excited at new questions & get energised !! Think it over ….

From the personal experience of those who have studied medicine in either, or both places, is it better to do an MD in India or the US if one inevitably wants to practice in India?

I have trained for medical school in India and my specialty and sub specialty training in the US.  I have worked in the US and then in India (after being in the US for several years).  My experience has been that the differences in the disease pathologies, patient communication, work culture make it difficult to translate training from US to India.  As has been mentioned, infectious diseases form the backbone of pediatric care in India whereas other pathologies such as immunology, behavioral issues form major concerns in the US.  In the US, physician-patient communication is very different from India.  What would be considered appropriate discussion in the US will come across poorly in India.  Majority of the Indian patients expect dogmatic physician with paternalistic style, whereas in the US, they expect a discussion of the treatment options.  Furthermore, in India age is revered and hence a young looking physician is not be acceptable to the patients (this may be more valid for procedures/surgical branches).  Also, one has to train and work in the kick-back environment of India to feel comfortable with the practice.  A US based training will leave you uncomfortable and queasy about it (and rightly so).At the end of the day, one does not gain much by training in the US if one plans to practice in India.   The struggle to get in to a residency program as a foreign medical graduates and even when one succeeds, one wonders if an average community hospital based training programs that most foregin medical graduates get into are worth it.
