Forgot to turn off the stove?

I forgot to turn off the stove when i cooked breakfast this morning, im at work right now and nobody is at home. It is an electric stove and i only turned it up to number 4 heat, should i be worried? I dont know what to do pls healp me. (Oh and I am not entirely sure if i actually left it on but i have no recollection of turning it off either!!!! D:)

Have you ever forgot to turn off the oven? What happened?

One time my Wife was the last person to use the Oven at night, I don’t remember what she bake with it but it was something for dinner.Anyway we didn’t notice she forgot to turn it off until the morning when I came down the stairs and noticed a smell of preheated oven (I couldn’t describe it like a heated metal sort of smell, this was an electric oven). And then I felt the kitchen was quite warm when I finally noticed that the oven was on so I rushed to turn it off.Luckily nothing else happened except that our electrical bill was significantly higher than usual that month. The same thing happened also with a smaller toaster oven that we have on our kitchen counter but that one has a security system to turn off by itself after 4 hours. Again nothing besides a higher electrical bill and a warmer kitchen.

Forgot to turn off kettle so it turned off itself?

I don't know if you mean a gas heated kettle on the stove or gas ring or an electric one. If it's a gas one, the kettle probably boiled the water out of itself and just left the basically dry kettle still sitting on the gas burner. over a period of time the heat from the flame possibly opened up some part of the kettle or its' base and any water left would have put out the gas flame and you'd only have the gas coming into the house. If it was an electric kettle most modern ones have a boiling cutout that should trip when the water gets near boiling point. I think your problem would be the gas heated one. Don't rely on other people turning the gas off, if you've got enough water for your use turn the heating off at the stove or whatever yourself.

What happens if you leave the gas stove knob turned to "on"?

On a modern stove, you would have a large gas bill. Or if you use bottled gas, you wouldn’t be cooking a hot meal anytime soon until you got the tank refilled. With an older stove, most still have a pilot light that will keep the burner going until the gas is turned off, one way or another. If the pilot light goes out, the gas no longer will flow even if the burner control remains on. Only if you have a very old stove without a pilot light that required you to manually light each burner you desire using. Then you would get the gas-air mixture building up until it ignites from any source, blowing your house into the next block.

Is it necessary to turn off a microwave oven when not using it?

You can either leave it on all the time or pull the plug so it is completely off - it’s your choice. When the plug is in but the microwave is off, the oven is in standby - only the digital clock is drawing power, i.e. using electricity, which does cost a small amount of money, but it doesn’t “hurt” the oven. When I leave my house for more than a day I usually pull the plug so as to save electricity, more for the environment than the cost. The problem with doing that is that I then need to reset the clock each time. If I’m away for a longer period also pull the plug on other devices, like the TV, that are always on drawing electricity.

I put a pork butt in crock pot at about 9pm and forgot to turn it on - woke up at 4 am - is it safe to eat?

Denise, I have not seen the Unknown Chef give wrong answers so far that I have noticed, your fine with that, the lid was on which forms a slight seal.

Your not the only one that has done that, and you will not be the last.

Do electric stoves have an auto shut off feature if they are accidently left on?

No they don't. Someone I know turned one on @ night and fell asleep and it was still on the next morning when I got up. It didn't cause any damage cuz there was nothing in it, but if your brother was to leave something in it I'm sure eventually it would burn and catch fire if it was in there long enough.

Is it possible to forget to shut off the gas valve when removing a gas stove?

If you forgot to turnoff the manual valve before removing the flexible gas hose to the appliance, you will hear the flow of gas plus the smell of the gas prior to totally removing the hose. It would be such that you would quickly realize that the manual valve was open and need to be closed. Natural gas has an additive that smells like rotten eggs to make it noticeable if it is leaking.
