I Get Bad Sinus Pain All The Time And When I Blow My Nose I Get Hard Black Bits In My Snot

When you blow your nose and there is blood in it what does that mean?

I have heard that if there is blood and it is red when you blow your nose that it could mean that you have a sinus infection, I was wondering if anyone else had heard this....and I am sorry I know the question sounds gross!

Is it possible to blow your nose so much that your brain comes out?

That’s actually kind of interesting. There are cases where individuals snort cocaine so often that the crystals etch a hole in the bottom of the skull. In that case, when you blow your nose, you will be leaking spinal fluid, get a screaming headache, and wind up in the ER, if you are lucky. But your brain is secondarily wrapped by the Dura mater, which is thick and under the bone, so you are unlikely to etch through both bone and dura, no matter what you do, short of taking a Black and Decker drill and jamming it up your nose. Which, needless to say, will make it impossible for you to ask any more questions on Quora.

Why does my head hurt when I blow my nose and is it dangerous?

My son was scheduled for sinus surgery with an ear nose and throat doctor. He told us that after the surgery he was not to blow his nose at all. That sounds logical and reasonable but then he told me something that really surprised me. He said people should not blow their nose they should sniff and spit. I know a lot of people do this in these days and I find it totally gross because they spit on the ground but that's what he said. Now that was 20 years ago and I don't know if anything's changed in that regard but you want to be sure you're not blowing too hard. And if you do have a sinus infection as someone else suggested you should do a couple of more things. You can get sinus medicine which is pseudoephedrine and you have to get that from behind the pharmacist counter. And even more importantly you need to put a hot compress on your face so that it covers the sinuses above your nose and eyebrows and also the sinuses that are on either side of your nose just under your eyes. And I would suggest you do this hot pack several times a day. And of course you need to see your doctor if it doesn't improve.

I have a sinus cold and when I blow my nose tears squirt from my left eye. Why?

Its incredibly annoying. I already have a cold with enough sinus pain and congestion to kill a bear, and now everytime I blow my (raw and scabbed over) nose, I also have to wipe the sensitive skin around my eye. Now my eye is also red as well as sore from all the wiping. I know the tear ducts and sacs are connected to the nasal passage so that when you cry excess tears run down your throat and nose explaining why you need to blow your nose when you cry, but this is totally backwards...I blow my nose and it makes me cry. I do not have a blocked tear duct. Is there a reason for this or a valid medical explaination as well as treatment? I know it seems frivilous, but I am already sick enough without having to deal with spontaneous and now painful tears.

Oh, and you can actually see the tears being forced out with each burst of air from my nose - I watched it in the mirror.

Very Thick, Stringy Dark Green mucus stained with red/black blood!?

For about 4 months now, i have had the symptoms of a common cold, constant coughing, sneezing, running nose etc. I tried everything i could to get rid! For about a week and a half now, i have developed an uncommon (for me anyway) symptom. I woke up struggling for air one night and felt something stuck in the back of my throat.. After forcefully coughing and 'heaving' i could feel something 'sliding' up my throat, so i continued to 'Heave' it up (sorry for my vivid use of words). Anyway, finally it was out. It was like a big thick line of glue, dark green in colour with red and black lumps in it! Once it is out, it is such a relief! I am still constantly coughing, sneezing and blowing my nose throughout the day, but at least twice a day, I will experience this, it comes from nowhere. In UK it is now 06.09am. I went to bed at 11pm last night and woke up at 2am gasping for air. i managed to get a little out but still to this very point I have a large amount remaining. I am struggling to breathe and i can just constantly feel it there, I keep trying to get it out as i am very tired but it seems like it will get to the top of my throat and no matter how hard i try, that's as far as it's going for today! I am also on the edge of dehydration due to all of the spitting etc. I do intend to go to my Doc. But does this ring a bell to anyone as i can't seem to find info. anywhere.. Thanks in advance and once again, I am sorry for the 'goorey' information but it's the best way if you want the right diagnosis true? Thanks

What is causing me to cough phlegm with black spots?

Many times, phlegm can appear to have black specks in it just as a result of environmental pollutants. Dust and other particles when inhaled can translate into darker or speckled mucus. This can also be a result of nasal mucus, whereas dirt and debris breathed in through the nose can make its way through the respiratory system and result in coughing up black mucus, or that which is discolored or full of specks and flecks. The nose also can contribute to black specks in mucus in another fashion as well. When blowing the nose becomes excessive and dryness and cracking in the nostrils give way to bleeding, small pieces and spots of dried blood can very easily become mixed right in with mucus. Black mucus in nose areas is often a result of dried blood, and this can change the color entirely or merely add some speckled spots therein. Therefore nasal mucus may very well be the cause of black specks in mucus.Another common reason that dotted mucus may be present is simply related to meal time. Wisegeek notes that ingesting black foods can temporarily change the color of one’s mucus, and certain edibles such as licorice and chocolate can lead to black mucus or that which can be speckled. Normally, black specks in mucus resulting from food sources however is temporary. And, therefore recurring bouts are likely not attributed to this cause (unless licorice and chocolate are very frequent menu items).Phlegm that is black is incredibly common as a result of inhaling smoke and, black specks in mucus are not uncommon as a result of inhaling the toxins. It’s been suggested that the black flecks are a result of tar in the lungs. While most common in cigarette smokers, those that are frequently exposed to smoke, such as firefighters, may also experience occasional black mucus. Black specks in mucus could also be present in people working in coal mines, automobile manufacturing plants, and road construction industry. And of course, dried blood again can cause black specks in mucus, but in a different way than via nose canals. In certain rare infections (fungal in nature) such as mucormycosis and aspergillosis, blood can be found in the lungs that can be expelled with mucus. This bleeding can also be caused by other health conditions such as cancer of the lungs and emphysema. When released in the mucus, instead of the characteristic red color that is typical of blood, a darker and black hue can be evident, and specks and flecks are not uncommon as well.

What can cause black spots in mucus?

Most probably air pollution, looks like carbon to me. Where do you live? In a city choked by diesel exhausts full of dirty particulate matter, industries polluting the air, people smoking around you, even you cooking on a wood burning stove? Not worse than it was before, but now showing because of usually you wouldn’t cough up/sneeze up mucus so wouldn’t notice.

What happens when you snort pepper?

Your sinuses are severely inflamed and I'm surprised you haven't gotten a nose bleed. Do NOT do any more salt water rinsing as this dries nasal passages. You basically put pepper on mucus membranes, not a very smart thing to do. As for what could happen, you won't die if that's what you're wondering. You may have damaged your sense of smell for a while though. Don't put pepper up your nose for starters. You could try putting some ice water or milk on a tissue and resting it against your membranes inside your nose. You've flushed them already with water, so you're good there. Don't keep putting water in your nose, but if you want, get small pieces of ice to stick in your nose. It may offer relief just don't do it for long periods of time. Also, feel free to put a bag of ice on your nose and face. Take some pain killers ex. tylenol and try and get some sleep. If you are not better by tomorrow afternoon, then you need to go take a trip to the emergency room.
