I Got Caught Shoplifting In Hannaford But No Police Were Called. Should I Be Concerned

After I get caught shoplifting will they put a picture of me in their office?

Original question: "After I get caught racking will they put a picture of me in their office?"  Since from your question comments you seem to mean retail theft, yes, in this area, it's a common practice for stores to put pictures up of known thieves and people who pass bad checks or counterfeit currency. You will also likely be prosecuted and have to pay a bunch of fines to the state, be banned from the store, and have a criminal record that will make it hard for you to get a job in the future, so you will miss out on future income. If the theft is large or repeated or if you violate the terms of your probation, you will be sent to prison in addition to all of the above.

I got caught shoplifting in Hannaford but no police were called. Should I be concerned?

I am just going to start off by saying I know this was stupid and it will never happen again. They brought me into a surveillance camera room and I signed papers stating I was banned from all Hannafords for life and if caught in one I will be arrested for Trespassing. The guy said that I was let off easily and that these kinds of things would affect my college career. I am really freaking out because school is so important to me that it would ruin my life if i got expelled. They also said that Hannaford might send me a bill for the item I attempted to steal which was Neutrogena Face wash for $7. Will i be charged a fee as well or just the $7? Please someone help me figure all this out i have been a mess all day. I apologized as I was leaving and they said let this be an eye opener which it was! I also gave them my school address because they asked.

Have you ever witnessed shoplifting?

Yes ! I have .So,this thing happened 3 or 4 days ago.I was returning from gym at 8.30 in the morning.I thought about taking some coffee and some noodles from Reliance Fresh which is near to my gym. So,the noodles section was on first floor. When I was gathering my stuff, I noticed a girl doing something at the end of that section. And the situation was like this. She was at the end of that section. There was no CCTV camera on the first floor but this type of convex mirror only.As it was early in the morning, there was no store boy on that floor.I showed a little interest on actually what she was doing. She put a Tropicana fruit juice out of the stack.Opened, drank about half of it and put down as it was walked away.I was like WOW……..Ambani ki beti hogi shayad!!!!!Will you call it shoplifting????And an interesting fact happened.I told about this to a store boy. And he requested me not to tell this about anybody.I asked him why?He said he has a crush on her.

Have you ever seen someone shoplifting? If yes, how/what did you react?

I was a professional shoplifter for a long time. By professional, I mean, it was my source of income, and the only. I was on a student visa, and I was only allowed to work for a limited time. I discovered shoplifting, how to not get caught and how to sell what you lift. I use to make $2000/week cash (equivalent in the local currency, in Europe). Dedicating about 16 hrs a week, including stealing and selling. ‘So I found an easy way to make money and fund my education and also live in luxury. Then I grew old and stopped it. Thinking about it now, I cannot do it again. I was young and reckless. Now, I would shiver doing it. I was totally fearless at that time.I used to shoplift expensive electronics like LCD TVs, DVD recorders etc. The technique I used, was discovered by me through trial and error. And how to sell at the maximum price. I have searched a lot on the internet about various ways people do it and still haven’t found my method. So I plan to keep it a secret, in case I need to do it again some time in future. If I have financial difficulty or something.I never stole from independent stores but only very large chain stores like Walmart which have very large weekly sales, so missing a few hundred dollars just disappears into their allowed shrinkage per week. (I also worked in a supermarket, so I know about the inside things and the numbers. Also about security.)

How can I curb shoplifting in my store?

The single best way is to have your staff be vigilant and to train them to look for suspicious behavior. This can include customers:Wearing too many clothes relative to the weatherPaying a lot of attention to your employees' behavior. This could be a sign that they’re sizing up your place or about to steal.Bringing in a backpack, large purse, or other bags to the store.“Accidentally” triggering your security alarm. They could be doing so to gauge how alert your employees are to the alarm. If they seem nervous. If a group of people comes into the store at once, especially if one or more of them talk to your employee while the others examine merchandise nearby. Now, let’s be clear: the majority of shoppers who exhibit one or even more of the above behaviors are NOT shoplifters. So don’t go around doing “citizen’s arrests” or calling the police on someone just because they don’t have the sense to dress correctly for the temperature outside.Instead, use these as signs that your staff should be vigilant. For more on retail store security, including how you can prevent shoplifters and employee theft, read this post: 5 Practical Steps For Preventing Shoplifting And Employee Theft

What’s the strangest thing anyone has tried to haggle or bargain with you?

The strangest thing anyone ever attempted to bargain with me was a shoplifter I caught several years ago. She shoplifted several items and hid them both on her person and in her purse. When I stopped her outside and asked for the merchandise back she told me she would give me what was in the purse but not what was on her person. I had already called the police at this point, so it was just a matter of time before they showed up. I was able to successfully “bargain” about what she could keep and what she would give back until they showed up. The look on her face was priceless when the police pulled in the parking lot. She was not a bright one at all.

At the supermarket, with scan and bag your own items, how do they prevent shoplifting?

With great difficulty. That’s the problem with self checkout. Not only customers are lousy at being cashier, with one attendant watching 4 stations they can easily distract the attendant by asking for help (I estimate that happens about all the time). Not only that but they can simply switch tags (which a cashier can easily spot but missed at self checkouts). If this is done correctly the shoplifter can get significant discounts on items with little to no risk to the shoplifter. While items like TV and electronics are under more scrunity most losses are actually stuff like soda, water, food, meat, produce, etc. because nobody thinks of them as stuff that people would want to steal. However the store I work at the highest shrink is actually in the grocery section and not electronics. Furthermore items at the bottom of cart is easily missed, and shoplifters take advantage of that. It also does not prevent hiding one item inside another item. Cashiers are instructed to check every container, purse, backpacks, etc. that are purchased because people do put items inside. Intentional or not if that is missed it can mean at least 30 dollars lost per customer. Self checkout stations can’t always detect that since some items weight next to nothing.I personally think self checkout should be eliminated. Customers hate them because they are slow, and customers don’t make good cashiers. The fact that no discount incentives are offered for using self checkout disincentivizes them further. After all, you are making them do the work a cashier would do…Whatever the company saves in labor are lost in shoplifting… Average shrink at my store was over 1 million dollars! Think about how many jobs that could provide…
