Why cant I connect to my wireless network with my laptop?

Hey.
First step, check your wireless network (wifi) card is properly installed. Go to your Device Manager (on ctrl panel) and check it's not got any error messages. Check the drivers are installed, and if not, install them.
Remember to switch your machine off and back on again after messing with settings to give your pc a chance to start over. XP shouldn't need this, but sometimes it helps.

If this still doesn't work, it would be useful to check the wifi card actually works. Is there a different slot you could put it in? If not, is there a different laptop you could try it in?

Use Microsoft's connection manager to try and search for wireless networks. If your pc still can't see any, check if your wifi card is supposed to have an external arial attached, and if it's not there, you won't be able to connect. Most laptop cards don't have one, though.

If you still can't see the networks at all, your card is probably dead. They're not expensive to replace on ebay these days, but if you're using a Dell laptop, check that the port you're using is really a PCMCIA port, as some of their laptops come with a port that only takes Dell hardware. If in doubt, go with a USB one instead.

Converting my laptop to wifi hotspot?

I don't understand why you had to use "connectivity software" when the functions you want are built in to Windows 7.

It's called an Ad Hoc connection.... well, that combined with ICS (internet connection sharing). Both are built in and come with Windows 7.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo...
For example. Those are the steps to enable and create an Ad Hoc connection. Now...
1. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center
2. Under Change your networking settings, click Set up a new connection or network
3. Select Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network
4. Enter your Network name, and enter a Security key if wanted
5. Check the box for Save this network and click Turn on Internet connection sharing on next page

If for some reason you are NOT presented with that option to turn on Internet Connection Sharing...
1. Open Network and Sharing Center
2. Go to Change Adapter Settings
3. Find the adapter for the default internet connection
4. Right click on that -> Cancel as Default Connection
5. Right click -> Properties -> Sharing tab
6. Uncheck "Allow other network users to connect ..." if it is not
7. Setup the ad-hoc as explained previously, the Turn on Internet Connection Sharing should appear

Otherwise... with this Connectivity Software that you are using... it sounds like you might have enabled WEP or WPA security, but you didn't put the security key in on your phone.

Laptop can't connect to wifi but other devices can?

> A wireless network adapter for your laptop (or built-in wireless on a different portable device).

> You should also make sure you have a firewall installed and the latest antivirus updates and operating system patches, especially if the network you're connecting to is a public one.

> Look for a hardware switch or special function key on your laptop that can turn the wireless radio on or off -- it may have accidentally been turned off. Flip the switch or hit the function keys to test if this is the case.

> Also, sometimes the wireless radio may be disabled by power management settings on your laptop or your phone; fix this permanently by going to the Power Options for your device and changing the settings there so the wireless adapter won't be disabled by low battery triggers.

> Clean your system using reliable software such as reginout.
