I Had An Oral Surgery And My Parents Won

To become an oral surgeon, is it easier to get into medical school or dental school?

Very happy to know you have already thinking ahead, I am sure that your parents are very proud of you. Medical schools required a higher GPA and other achievement than dental school. I have two sons, one had completed medical school, the other is in dental school. Both schools are tough to get in due to limited available students can enroll. The drop out rate in medical school is a higher than dental school due to long hours during internship. Many couldn't cut it. Dental school required less hours and more like a 8:00-6:00 a.m. job.
Yes, it is great to enter both professions. It is much easier to enter medical school after you have completed the dental program than someone didn't.
Have you thought of the expenses? One of my kid has the U.S. Armed Foreces to pay for all the expenses, i.e. $300,000. He is committed to four years duty with the Armed Forces after he completed the program. That's is not a bad option. Serve your country and get your wish the same time. Four years fly by so quickly. You get the real experience after the MD/DDS.
Goo dluck!

Why is it bad to use a straw after having oral surgery?

Sucking on a straw creates a vacuum inside your mouth, no matter which side of your mouth the straw is on. The vacuum effect puts a lot of pressure on the stitches that are left from the surgery and can cause excess bleeding of the surgery site. You really need your entire mouth to be suction-free to allow optimal healing. Either drink from a glass or spoon the food into your mouth. Hope you have a speeding recovery!

Wisdom Teeth surgery tomorrow, what to expect? ?

Hi Nicole -

Try not to be nervous - you have to assume that all will work out for the best and that you have a good oral surgeon, and trust him.

Being put to sleep is very easy - you get a needle (just pinches for a second) either in the back of your hand or in your inner elbow. The surgeon tells you you'll start to feel sleepy, and ask you to count backwards from 10. By the time you get to 6, you'll be out.

It's like no time has gone by - first you're counting back, next thing you know, you're waking up. Your mouth will be dry, and also will be very numb, as you will have gotten novocaine while you were out. You probably will get the long-acting type and so may be numb for 6 hours or so - which is not a bad thing. You'll also feel a little groggy, and "out of it" for while.

IMHO, Vicodin is much better than Tylenol #3. The codeine in the T3 is not really as strong for dental pain as the Vicodin, and generally upsets your stomach even more. Take Vicodin BEFORE the numbness is all worn off - and make sure you have something in your stomach first.

You will have puddings, cream of wheat, smooth ice cream, yogurt - all the things that don't require chewing and that go down easily. A little yogurt is a good choice to have with the Vicodin.

You will be oozing a little blood for a few days - the oral surgeon will give you a packet of sterile gauze to take with you. You only need to use the gauze as long as you have bleeding. Tomorrow night when you go to bed, use a little towel and your oldest pillowcase, because you will probably have some oozing in your sleep. Do NOT sleep with the gauze in your mouth.

The most important advice I can give you about all this is to avoid, at all costs, something called a dry socket. This is when the blood clot comes off the extraction site prematurely, and you get an inflammation of the bone. To help avoid this: no smoking, drinking through a straw, hard rinsing/spitting - nothing that will disturb the clot.

Most likely, you will be fine, and I believe in being prepared. I am enclosing a link for a really informative post-op instruction sheet for you to look over - your oral surgeon will give you his own version, but read this over and jot down any questions you have, so you can ask him before the procedure begins.

(((HUGS))) Good luck - you'll do great!

My parents won't let me get my wisdom teeth extracted?

My bottom two wisdom teeth have been causing me pain since I was 16. Now the pain has pretty much gone (18). Before I had so many infections and issues with the gum gaping and bleeding. Now, my wisdom teeth have caused my teeth to start to crowd - as in, it's no longer straight. Last month I noticed my front tooth being higher than the other, and now my teeth are starting to turn inwards.
Everytime I eat, two of my teeth on the bottom row scrape against my lip which has resulted in ulcers forming.

I told my parents if I leave it then my teeth will become even more crowded and it will be more painful for me to eat that I would then need braces as well as getting them pulled out, rather than just getting them pulled out and having the tips of my bottom teeth filed to a softer edge.

It costs about $1000 per tooth. And I have the money in my savings account to do it. I just need them to sign a consent form for me to go under anaesthetic to have the procedure done. I already told them that the longer I leave it, the more painful extraction will be. But they refuse to it saying that if I leave it there is a possibility of not needing surgery, but just a simple procedure. However, looking at my jaw and where and how the teeth have erupted, there is NO space for them to even grow so my guess so far is that these teeth will not erupt and will remain partially erupted,

Has anyone got some useful links or resources to help convince my parents I need this done?

No money to pull out my wisdom teeth by oral surgeon?

I am a college student who has no health insurance. My parents don't have health insurance either and they are also poor. My dentist told me I will have to go to the oral surgeon to pull my wisdom teeth out due to it being by a nerve. The oral surgeon charges over $1k per tooth.

What can I do? I don't want to wait till im older and risk more complications.

Is family allowed in surgery room during Wisdom teeth removal?

Nope. When I had my oral surgery, the surgeon wouldn't even allow my parents in the room. I wanted them back there so bad though. I was scared lol.

How old are you? I'm sixteen. Your parents might have to go back with you if you are younger. I'm not sure of the age limit, or even if there is one.

God bless! :)
