I Have A Question About Claiming A Money Prize For Someone Who Can Tell The Government Where A

Can illegal immigrants claim slot machine jackpots or lottery prizes?

Casinos do have the final word as to whether or not to pay the winner his or her monies. In most occasions, if an illegal immigrant hits a jackpot (which has happen many times), in Las Vegas, the casinos will automatically deduct 30% percent of the winnings and give the rest to the illegal immigrant(s).

However, there was one instances in the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino where an illegal immigrant hit a jackpot (about $35,000) and was told that he wasn't entitle to the cash b/c he did not reside as a legal resident. You can say that the guy was visibly upset after hearing the final saying by Rio's slot manager.

What actually happens after someone wins money on a game show?

I just thought I'd add a UK perspective to this (following the comment from Ian on Eric's answer)I took part in a few game/quiz shows  when I was a student with wildly varied results (there's only a limited club of people who can lay claim to the achievement of losing twice on University Challenge after coming back into the competition as a highest scoring losing team!)One show I was on was called 'Beat The Nation'. It was a short lived replacement for British tea-time institution Fifteen to One and it asked you to answer questions with points awarded based on how many of the population knew the answer to the same question when surveyed. Someone's uploaded the first episode here so you can get the gist if you must (it wasn't dazzling TV...)Anyway, I was fortunate enough to win the show I was on and take part in final round for a chance to win a £500 cash prize. I managed to do so and, as in the UK we are not liable for tax on prize winnings of this kind, the process was incredibly straight forward. The production team congratulated me after the cameras stopped running and checked they had my name and address correct and then I got the train home. There was a short delay if I recall (it was some 12 years ago now) in order for the admin to take place, but I duly received a cheque in the post for £500 which I was able to deposit in the bank just as you normally would.

Won a 5000 lottery ticket, i am paying student loans back.. will gov take my winnings when i cash my ticket in?

Yes they will... at least potential income taxes ..

That large of a winning ticket REQUIRES you turn it in at a lottery office, where they demand your SS# and other things. They will withhold up to 20% of the winnings.. MINIMUM....

Listen closely when you hear about the next big lottery winner. They will say " Winner X will receive a lump sum payment of $ XXXX AFTER TAXES".

Do you receive reward money for reporting illegal immigrants?

I just wanted some sort of clarification on this statement.
I recently saw on MTV's True Life: "I Live on The Border", a young man claiming that somebody could receive $800 for turning in an illegal immigrant /alien.

Whats the fact behind this? I looked up a couple sites that claim they will report the person for you, which makes me believe that money is involved, and the sites collect on these rewards... because it doesnt seem like something you would do for fun.

I live in southern california, where there are A LOT of illegals.. and I have never heard this.

Why does a person need to pay tax on money (1 crore) gifted by a TV game show, if the show has already paid tax?

A TV show works like any other business. The revenues come from advertisement and sponsorships. The expenses will be setup cost, salaries, payment to star hosts and prize money to contestants. The income for TV show will be the difference between revenue and expenses on which it needs to pay income tax. Note that no tax has been paid on prize money as it is an expense for TV show. Now whoever wins the prize money, it becomes income for him. In most of the cases the prize money is paid after deducting TAX (TDS). This Tds is nothing but tax paid by Tv show on your behalf. This means you have paid the tax on prize money income which you can claim when filing your tax return.

In USA can a lottery be won by non US citizen or non green card?

There is no reason in federal law why you would need to be a citizen or lawful permanent resident to play or win a state-run lottery, and it's likely that a state that makes such a rule is in violation of the federal law that prohibits a state from discriminating on the basis of nationality, citizenship, or immigration status. The reason why they want a green card is because the lottery agency needs a federal tax ID because the winnings from the lottery are subject to US tax. If you win a US-based lottery and are not a "US resident for income tax purposes" (see the Internal Revenue Code), then you will have to pay a raft of additional taxes out of the winnings as the US taxes US-sourced income earned by a nonresident when it leaves the United States. It's likely that, in this situation, the regional lottery disbursement offices cannot handle the transaction, and you'll have to go to the main operational office, with your attorney and other documentation, to sort out all the legal and tax consequences.
