Does Zoloft contain MAOI?
No, don't worry! Zoloft (sertraline) is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), while MAOIs are older, much less used antidepressants. If you are given an MAOI your doctor will warn you of the side effects, as they can interact dangerously with other prescription drugs, alcohol and even certain foods. They tend to only be used as a last resort if SSRI and tricyclic antidepressants haven't worked for you.
Is it safe to drink alcohol while on antidepressants?
There are several, different classes of antidepressants. Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (this class includes Prozac, Zoloft, etc.) can decrease the amount of alcohol you need to drink in order to feel a "buzz" and become intoxicated. These drugs are metabolized by the liver as is alcohol. When you drink while taking an antidepressant from this drug class, you cause your liver to work harder and the levels of medication may increase/ remain in your system longer than they should (same with the booze). IT IS CONTRAINDICATED TO DRINK ALCOHOL IF YOU ARE TAKING AN ANTIDEPRESSANT FROM THE CLASS CALLED: MAO Inhibitors; this is VERY dangerous as any food or drink that is fermented can cause a reaction with these drugs that has the potential to kill you! Alcohol exacerbates emotional depression in individuals who are susceptible to it (not necessarily when you are drinking...it worsens often days after drinking/in the inbetween - drinking - time). It is best to avoid drinking alcoholic beverages if you are being treated for depression regardless of which antidepressant you are taking. *You will need to ask your Dr. or pharmacist which class of antidepressants you have been prescribed or email me and I will tell you.*
Can I drink non-alcoholic beer while on antidepressants?
Sure, doctors ALWAYS tell you not to drink no matter what medication you're using or what ailment you might have. Its so annoying. Not that I would encourage you to drink heavily, but a few beers won't kill you. I'm on anti-depressants now (Welbutrin)and have had no problems.
Is ginkgo biloba a mild MAOI?
I was reading that ginkgo biloba is a mild MAOI but, there was no evidence to support this statement. And i couldn't find anything on this subject. So, is ginkgo biloba a mild MAOI?

no, don't do it. I ain't against drugs but I say don't do it. The reason why is because Zoloft is an SSRI as are most antidepressants (well, MAOI or SSRI but theyre almost the same). MAOIs and SSRIs interact with many different drugs that can be really bad for you, perhaps fatal. You could die from whats called Serotonin Sydrome. I don't know if alcohol or cocaine cause interactions with MAOIs/SSRIs but look it up. Just a heads up. If it was safe Id say go for it but I know for sure that antideppressent have all kinds of contraindications.
Anyone take Zoloft 50 mg? What are your side effects?
I started taking this in March for anxiety, nerves, being a single mom with 1 child & to reduce the side effects of coming off some other stuff. Since then I have insomnia, wake up once in the middle of night, 1:30am, 3:30 am or 4:30. I hate this. I feel at times (at work) I am in a fog like I don' t know what I am doing. I make stupid mistakes! I don't want to loos my job. Or my mind will go blank for a few seconds, messing up at work or like driving in my car gotta think for a second what I am doing. I've notice weight gain is starting up. I hate taking antidepressants. What else can I take? Do I need something for adult ADD? I am 44 yrs old. I've always had a problem with concentration or MAKING STUPID MISTAKES! Not always focused! And so tired when I get off work, no energy. Don't feel like doing anything. I also take atenonol (tenormin) for heart flutters. Could it be from the atenonol? So frustrated!
Why can't you take Robitussin if you are taking MAOI drugs ( anti-deppressants ) ?
I have been taking Zoloft for the past 2 months, it wasn't helping so I switched to Wellbutrim and didn't like that one either, so I stopped taking them all together, I stopped completely about 3 days ago, Now I'm suffering from a severe head cold and I need to take some Robitussin for my cold, and it says on the box not to take it, if you are taking MAOI drugs, or for 2 weeks after, My question is, Does anybody know why and what can happen if you do ? Please help me out here... This head cold has me miserable, and I want to take it so bad to get some rest, Thanks in advance for your response.. I appreciate it.
