I Have Read That Working At Nordstrom You Have To

Should I work at Nordstrom?

You have to be good with the public and remember that everyones perception is different. Meaning you can have one customer that thinks are really cool and the next customer could think are a total bleep. Major con is you get people that come in and know that customer is always right when you no damn well that they are not. I have that problem everyday. Then you are going to get the ones that say does this look good on me and test you. The ones that wear something too small for them and you almost can't stand but help telling them the truth politely. discounts are deffinately worth it, especially with them. At least when I worked for them two years ago. They are the best clothing retail company to work for as far as I am concerned. Your pay can go up real quick if you do your job and go above the call of duty after 90 days. Being your first sales job, you would probably get paid minimum for the company, of which would be different from state to state. The only reason that I don't work there anymore is because I found a higher paying job after I was done with college. Good luck and I am sure that you will do fine as long as you smile and nod.

How is working at Nordstrom just commission?

Its kind of diffucult to explain but i worked at nordstorm for 2 years...so here goes. Basically you either get paid commission OR hourly. The hourly is $10 an hour, but you dont want to be making hourly since selling and making commssion you can average out to about 25 dollars an hour. Youre required to see a certain amount per hour (depending on what department you are working in). With this hourly goal you will be making more commission than hourly...so for example...say in a 2 week period you sell 27,000 dollars worth of stuff, you divide that by how many hours you work and multiply it by 6.75%(thats the percentage of commsion you get in womens clothing, shoes get 11% of whatever they sell, and so on for the different departments.) Sooo selling oyu rhourly goal is going to be alot higher per hour than the basic $10 an hour. If you dont make your goal for the 2 weeks by not selling enough you make the measy 10 dollars an hr. If you miss your goal more than 2 times you get fired, so when people say ita all commision it might as well be.

Did i get the job? (nordstrom)?

Different Nordstroms work differently, different managers/HR people work differently too.

Don't worry, not everyone is offered a second interview immediately.

Retail can get busy and a lot of times new hires are not first priority on a managers mind. The waiting is painful, but you're on their time! A lot of managers do their paper work type stuff on Mondays, so wait until next monday and call if you haven't received a call by then. Do not call on the weekends (including fridays), those are very busy days.

When I was offered my job as a stylist there, it took them three months after my first interview to do anything and i was already in the company!

Can Nordstrom tell by looking up a receipt if an item has already been returned?

My friend and I have a bet: Suppose someone had two identical items A and B and A has the shank on the bottom (the return sticker). If someone returns it without the receipt and gets a refund based on the shank, can they return item B with no shank using the item A receipt? Or will the sales person be able to see that the receipt is for an item which was already returned?

What's it like to work at Nordstrom as a retail employee (sales associate, product consultant)?

I worked in the kids/babies department at Nordstrom one summer. I had zero sales experience but called them several times after applying online and interviewed for multiple positions. In my experience, if you show commitment and interest they will find a place for you—they want motivated people working for them. Many people know that Nordstrom pays by commission, which is why sales people are always hovering over you. In my department, we tried to be fair when “taking” customers, and management is usually good at not scheduling too many people, so I didn’t experience the extreme competition you sometimes hear about. Sometimes, issues arose when people would try to claim a customer as theirs after not actually helping them (asking someone if they need help does not make them your customer). Mostly, though, I found that the commission made me competitive with myself as opposed to with others. It’s a very self-motivated environment, and you can get a quite hefty paycheck.Nordstrom is big on loyalty—customer loyalty and employee loyalty. They usually hire from within and it’s easy to rise up in the company if you’re good at what you do.In general, I had a positive experience working at Nordstrom. The skills you learn are very transferrable, so while I don’t plan on pursuing a career in sales, I think working at Nordstrom has been valuable for my career overall. The worst part was dealing with the occasional insane person who works there—we had a junior manager in my department who was not even technically my superior, but she was on a huge power trip and was miserable to interact with. Also, it can be very tiring being on your feet and schmoozing all day—I got feedback from family/friends that I was not always the most pleasant to be around after a long shift.

What is the Nordstrom staff dress code or uniform?

From my experience, most of the departments don’t have explicit dress codes, but usually rough guidance + a few requirements.I worked in the Kids and Babies department, and we were told to look polished /nice, and to wear two accessories. “Accessories” meant pretty much whatever we wanted it to—earrings/necklaces/rings, watches, scarves, hair accessories, etc. On a normal day you’d find me in nude flats, black pants, some sort of comfortable/breezy blouse, a watch, and earrings. I had coworkers in my department who were both more dressed down and more dressed up than me, which is a testament to how flexible it can be.Other departments have different requirements. In BP they have to wear seven accessories (because that dept makes a lot selling accessories), which is why the girls there are always sporting things like turbans and a million bangles. Women’s Shoes usually has salespeople be a little more dressed up (the guys are almost always in suits), but if I remember correctly they didn’t have any accessory requirements since they often had to run back and forth to the back to grab sizes and accessories would get in the way. You’re by no means required to wear Nordstrom clothes, but this is what ends up happening in practice. All salespeople get 20% discounts, 40% during special promotions, which of course incentivizes you to spend your money there. It’s also dangerously easy to go shopping in the store during your lunch break. Some departments give employees free clothes for the purpose of testing them out and answering customer questions about them—I remember this happening a lot with jeans in TBD, and clothing in Encore (which is the plus-sized department). As a rough guide, employees are usually going to look nicer the more expensive their department is, and if their department is especially known for one type of item they will likely be wearing that thing (and telling you about it).

What do Nordstrom Rack employees wear?

At the Rack, guys are usually required to wear like button down shirts (long sleeved), and slacks, no jeans, no polos, no sweaters..A friend of mine wore a "dress sweater" to work once..and his boss went around calling him "sweater boy" all day..in a heavy german accent...it was too funny, so just to avoid humiliation like that, stick with the button down and slacks..lol
No gym shoes, casual is good, or even if you find an all black pair of gym shoes, they might let you get away with it..for comfort..they don't have to be spazzed out dressy...and I know they used to want you to wear a tie, but I knew a lot of guys who didn't..especially when it was hot..Good luck

New Nordstrom BP Cashier, HELP! calling all former Nordstrom employees?

I had orientation today but my manager didn't fully explain how to do some of my job responsibilities. What is racking and how do I do it? What is the BP dress code? I'm also responsible for the money bags but my shift starts at 10, same time the store opens. does that really mean I should come in way before that?
