I've encoded most of my videos to x265 so I think I should share my experience. In my experience the vlc is not that good with HEVC. The CPU usage is high, fast forwarding and seeking video is not that smooth.I use Potplayer or MPC-HC for playing videos. They are better than vlc in terms of CPU usage and simplicity. If you are sceptical about using these two then a Google search will verify my claim. If you even have a moderately powered GPU then you can even increase your video frame rate and or upscale any low resolution videos.Just search for MADVR with Potplayer.
