I Hit A Parked Car And Left A Note With My Right-wing Neighbor

Someone hit my parked car and left a note with his name and phone number. How should I proceed?

One week after taking delivery of my 9 year old Toyota Landcruiser I parallel parked it with a “wobble” to the parked car in front.I was aghast. I discreetly walked out and away. I could see a tiny paint mark on the painted bumper of the new seven series BMW in front.A old lady was looking on from the opposite pavement which made doing the right thing an easy decision!I scrawled out an apology note on an old paper parking coupon adding my mobile telephone number. And I waited. There was massive heavy rain that next few hours. Maybe my message had been washed away?48 hours later I got the whatsapp message that my note and apologies was received. At this point. I was so so sad.I had lost my job a year ago and money was very tight. I had a horrible gut feeling it could be very expensive. The other driver seemed most reasonable in not taking his car to the official dealer where a paint repair would be over $1000.Such a nice person. He could have asked for any sum of money up to $1000 and I know that the repair costs at least twice more than the requested $100 from a local paint shop.I was in tears at the kindness of this complete stranger. He could have honestly asked me for the full paint repair cost.I was $100 out of pocket. The other driver had $100 but also a small paint scratch that would cost more than that to repaint.I guess he has had many scratches over the years from other anonymous drivers so he at least appreciated my honesty in owning up.Anyway I found kindness in a complete stranger. Something special indeed.I drive more carefully now! Received kindness has its obligations!

What should I do if my car was hit while parked?

Not too long ago this happened to my wife twice within a short period of time. The first time was in Toronto, in a cramped parking lot. My wife came out of a store to find someone had driven into our car and then left. This store had cameras on the lot, and she convinced the store manager to review the video, and you could see someone drove into the lot, basically drove right into our car, backed up and left. But it was blurry and you couldn’t make out the car’s license plate, so even though we provided the video to police they couldn’t do anything with it. Because we didn’t have details on the other vehicle we had to pay our collision deductible, but it’s treated as a not-at-fault collision. The second time was in Charlottetown, someone probably making an illegal U-turn smashed into our parked car quite badly, and also left. This happened about a month after we just repaired the previous collision, and again we couldn’t identify the driver. We had to pay the deductible again for insurance to pay for the collision, and although it was still treated as a not-at-fault collision I got a letter from the insurance company not long after saying that although our rates were staying the same they were increasing our deductible. I don’t think they’re actually allowed to do that, but we were already in the process of changing insurance companies for unrelated reasons. In both cases (this applies to insurance in Ontario, Canada) as long as you report the collision to police within 24 hours, your insurance company will treat it as a not-at-fault collision although this is the odd case where you have to pay the deductible for a not-at-fault collision. My adjuster told me at the time that if they had enough information to follow up with the other driver’s insurance that they would waive the deductible, but we didn’t have that in either case. I don’t know what happens if you don’t report within 24 hours, but I expect it costs you a lot more.EDIT: spelling

What can I do if a neighbor's car is leaking gasoline but nobody is doing anything about it?

I moved into my apartment in October and called management the very first day to let them know about the guy's car leaking gasoline. Now it is the middle of Feb. and he is still parked outside, with gas dripping all over the parking lot. It's not considered a 'spill', but it is a steady drip. I know the guy has to put more money into paying for gas than anything else. The car is still drivable, and there isn't anything in our lease that says anything about gas leaking from your car. It only states that you aren't allowed to do maintence in the parking lot.
I have been calling our management and security since Oct. and all they do is leave notes on his door. I know people that work for the EPA, but I don't want to deal with the hassle they will cause. But I still want to do something without causing a big fuss or making our management too mad. I pay a lot to live in a very nice place (minus my neighbor) and feel that something more should be done to remedy the situation. Who do I call?

I'm parked next to a car, I open my door, the wind blows my door and hits the other car. Am I liable?

Good question. If you used reasonable care in opening the door, that is all that is legally expected of you. If the wind snatches the door out of your hand, you may not be legally liable for the damage. On the other hand, your insurance company may not think that it’s worth a battle and may pay the claim.Turn the matter over to your insurance company and let them deal with it. It’s unlikely that the loss will affect your premium.

What should I do if I barleyyy tapped my neighbors car?

I was parallel parking in front of my neighbor outside of my house. I bumbed into his truck just barley. I got scared kind of, just because I have never done that before and didn't know what would happen. I finished parking extra cautiously this time and told my younger brother (age 9) to see if anything happened to either cars. My car is old and not that great of a car but my neighbor has a nice truck. He said nothing happened to my car but that some paint was missing on the truck. I looked at it and it seemed like too much for my little bumb to have caused and there was nothing at all on my car. I asked him if he was sure and he said he had never seen the paint scratched like that before. I honestly don't think I could have done that to the paint. What do I do? Was I supposed to knock on the door and apologize? Or should I have left a note? I don't know what the right thing to do would be.

I hit the side mirror of a parked car?

I was in a pretty rough neighborhood on a narrow street. There were 2 lanes, and I was trying to get into the right lane to turn because the line for the left lane was long and backed up with traffic. I was slowly edging between a car on the road and a parked car and I guess I hit the parked car. I pulled over, and I had no idea what to do. I've only had my license 8 months. I couldn't google it or anything right then so I just got out of my car (which is technically my mom's car but I am on the insurance) and checked my mirror for damage (none) and then the other car's (I didn't see any). But then I picked my mom up and we drove by the same car and the mirror was half falling off. I freaked out because what if someone saw me hit the mirror, took my plate #, and assumed I was leaving the scene since I didnt write a note? I thought there was no damage, I guess it took a few moments to fall off? I'm freaking out, I can't lose my license or get in trouble for this because my parents will kill me. What are the odds I get tracked by the cops for this?

If I hit a parked car, what are my legal obligations?

This is a great question. Many people panic when this happens to them, unaware that hitting a parked car is not the worst accident that can happen to you.Bumping into a stationary car is not so rare, in fact, it’s one of the most common types of car accidents. It’s also the reason for more than 2/3 of hit-and-runs in the US.So the first legal obligation that you have to fulfill is this: to remain at the scene, or leave a note with your personal information and contact number by the car for the driver of the car you just hit. Not leaving the scene of the accident means being a responsible driver and not doing a hit-and-run. It also gives the other driver easy access to you for communication and negotiation regarding your settlement. The second obligation would be to document what happened. Take photos of the scene and make notes about what happened. These photos and notes could later help you with your case. You won’t just be doing this for the other driver—you’ll also be doing yourself a favor. The third is for you to make the necessary calls to your insurer and lawyer regarding what happened. You can file a notice with your insurance company in preparation for paying damages to the other driver.Hope this helps!

Do I have to pay the deductible if my car was hit while parked at my residence by a person unknown?

I was sideswiped by a truck who swerved into my lane. The only damage was to my drivers side mirror and window. I did not get their license number because because I had glass all over me. The truck drove on without stopping. I called the highway patrol and filed a report. Yes I had to pay my deductible even though I was not at fault.I had a Bronco 2 that I had parked just off the street. So far off the street it was actually in the ditch. They had to go out of their way to hit it but hit it they did and they drove off without notifying me. I again called the highway patrol and did everything I was supposed to and again I had to pay my deductible. There have been other incidents like that and its why I no longer carry $500 deductible. There were many times at work where I’d see someone with a damaged car telling folks that they’d hit a deer and the insurance would not pay. When I’d question them a bit I’d found out they’d chosen to carry $500 deductible and could not afford to get their car fixed.
