I Just Got A Job Working In The Jewelry Department At Walmart. What Can I Expect What Will It Be

Working for Walmart?? Job? Pay? Area?

Hi, I am a former Walmart employee. I have also worked for Walmart twice. The first time that I worked for Walmart was in the Austin, Texas area from January 1996 to June 1998. I was a cashier. When I first started working there it was great. The store was still small ,not a supercenter, and I really felt like I was part of a family and that I was appreciated. Well, during that time the store I worked at relocated to a new supercenter store and that's when everything seemed to go downhill. It seemed as if they really didn't care about anyone's individual needs anymore. I think sometime between 1996 and 1998 is also around the time that Sam Walton passed away. Boy, could you tell it too. It seemed as if they only cared about the money. The company has definitely changed since Sam Walton has been gone. :(

I don't remember exactly what I was making when I first started working there in 1996, but I know when I finally got fed up and quit in 1998 I was making $6.19 and I was about to get a 25 cent raise. I knew I couldn't afford to quit, but I just had to get out of there.

The second time that I worked for Walmart was from September 2004 to June 2005 and I was a cashier then also. I had moved from my hometown to live with my cousin in Brenham, Texas. When I got there I started filling out job applications and ,even though I didn't want to, I filled out one for Walmart too. I just kept telling myself that maybe working for them would be different since it had been a while and it was in a different area. Boy, was I wrong!! It was still the same horrible company!! Eventually, things didn't work out between me and my cousin and I had to move back to my hometown. I was able to get transferred to the Walmart store there. It was still the same old thing.

What really makes me mad about Walmart is that it seems as though the money and fame has gone to their heads. They don't care about their associates, their benefits are horrible, and the pay is really bad. It would probably be a very good idea if you put in your 2 weeks notice at Walmart. FYI: JCPenney is a good place to work.

I just started working for Walmart and I hate it?

I've literally been working there for three days and I dislike it so much. The first day was okay, it was orientation. The second day, instead of doing computer training, they threw us on the floor. I was thrown from the lingerie to the baby section, to shoes, and then to jewelry. The third day which is today, I was supposed to do computer training. Instead when I show up, they tell me they need me to answer phones in the fitting room area. They did a quick "training" on how to use the phone and left me on my way. They wanted me to do returns, sort clothes, AND maintain the fitting room while answering the phone and being the store operator. I got hired for jewelry and was told about being in charge of shoes as well, but all this is stressing me out. I was supposed to train with the jewelry person, because I have to open for her tomorrow. But I didn't get to train with her once today. I haven't even done my computer training! I barely started. The jewelry lady is very nice, but she told me that I would be stressed there because they use the jewelry associates for EVERYTHING. She even told me, "We're not just jewelry associates, we're everyone's associates." I'm also working alot of hours! They didn't even tell me if I was part/full time. I'm just "temporary." I really want to quit because honestly it's too much. It's my first job and my mom says if I quit it would look bad when I try to find another job. But in all honesty I don't want to get used and abused by all the departments because they are short handed. I think it's ridiculous. If I was to quit, what do I do/say? Do I say and explain that this job isn't what I had expected? My mom says I probably have alot of hours because of "training" and that I would probably get less after these two weeks. But I don't want to wait two weeks to see if I would get less. Would it be better if I quit now and make them save their time on training or should I put up with it for two weeks? I'm just stressed and I literally want to cry when I am at work and I pretty much just break down and cry to my mom when I get home.

What are a Walmart department manager's responsibilities?

Basically Crystal Linn summed up what you do.  Basically a Dept Mgr is an hourly with an additional title and additional responsiblities. For example a regular Sales Floor Associate does the following.1. Stock merchandise.2. Provide Customer Service.3. Make Sure the department he/she is in is clean and shoppable.4. Depending on area perform specific tasks (Cut Fabric, Run a Cash Register, hold keys to items in locked cases, mix paint)A Department Manager will do all of the above and in addition also1. Do Price Changes2. Set Modulars(A blueprint on how each section is set up and where all the merchandise goes)3. Change On-Hands(So you can get merchandise in when it says you have more than you do and stop getting merchandise when you have too much)4. Work in the backroom binning freight5. Plan and set features(Ordering say a lot of dog food and putting it on an endcap. It starts with finding a good seller, ordering it, getting it in, putting it an specific location where it's visable, and finally pricing it)6. Working reports such as out-of-stock, non-basic(Old merchandise in back room)7. Supervise the employees you have under you.A good department manager basically knows the area very well and should be the best expert for the area. My department is Stationary in my store and thus I should know about all the pens/office supplies/calculators etc better than anyone else in the entire store.  They must also know how all the systems such as how to take markdowns on merchandise, how to set the modulars, how to fix issues such as items not coming in the store at the rate needed. They are one rung up the ladder from your regular floor associates. Good Department managers are willing and able to do the tasks given to the floor associates as they must pick up the slack if the floor associate isn't up to par with doing the tasks or if there are so many it can't be done with one or two people.Regular Associate < Dept Mgr < ZMS < Asst. Mgr < Co-Mgr(or Shift Mgr) < Store Mgr.

Duties of the meat department asociate at Walmart and uniform?

I just got the job ( part time permanent ) in Walmart (Canada). First I did not get excited . I applied for a cashier or sales associate. I want to grow and be a sale associate. Am I able to ask to be transfered to another department ? I will sure work hard to prove myself . What uniform can I have ?, Can we have basebal hats beside hair net? Is it true no jewelary?

Plus I have a disability that I did not have a chance to discuss. Lifting heavy boxes is painful for me. What and how about should I go about it?

Walmart job interview questions?

i currently work at wal-mart and have been for almost a year, so i can't really remember exactly how my interview went and what questions were asked. Don't worry tho, it's normal to be nervous. I know they'll ask you senario questions...like, if this happens what do you do. Also, i believe they have you take a urine test within a certain amount of time after your interview. It's easy though and they hire just about anyone there. I think you'll do great! What department are you going into? Well, Good Luck!

Oh and to what the first person said...that isn't completely ture. there have been a lot of bad things said about wal-mart, but it depends on the store I guess. i haven't had any discrimination what-so-ever and i like my job situation. I started out working in electronics and now i just moved to jewelry.

How long is orientation at walmart?

I'll be working in the jewelry department, and I was just wondering how long orientation is. I've read that it's 9 1/2 hours long, I've read it's about 4 hours, and I've read it's 1-2. Anyone know? I have to be there at 9:30 in the morning.
