Why do they call it a preying mantis and not just a mantis?

Technically, the only species that should be refered to as a preying (or praying) mantis. This is the European mantis, or Mantis religiosa.Adult female praying mantisThey are callled “praying mantises” because of the way they hold their front legs, which double as arms for holding their prey. This positioning somewhat resembles the way hands are sometimes held while praying, thus the name “praying mantis.”As a bonus, here are a few other neat mantis species you may or may not be aware of:The Brunner’s stick mantis (Brunneria borealis) - It’s the only truly clonal (reproducing only from females) mantis species out there! The devil’s flower mantis (Idolomantis diabolica) - As far as cool names go, this one won the lottery. The orchid mantis. (Hymenopus coronatus) - One of the most beautiful species out there. Why not one more? Here you go:The ghost mantis. Phyllocrana paradoxaca. These are pretty cool looking, and have a cool name. Easier to take care of than a devil’s flower mantis, too.So, really, mantises are incredibly diverse. There are so many species, each with different names and classifications. Most of the time, too, their common name is pretty straightforward—you can usually find out its etymology just by looking at the scientific name or its appearance.

Can you have a praying mantis as a pet?

Yes, you can have a praying mantis as a pet. First, you need to have a home for your pet. You can keep them in a nice big vivarium, but Mantises are perfectly content in smaller enclosures with a height of approx. 2.5 times their length and about 2 times their length in width. (So a 2 inch mantis would do well in a container 5 inches tall and 4 inches across.) Whatever you keep them in, they will spend most of their time hanging upside down, waiting on their prey to get close enough for them to grab them with their raptors. Your Mantis will need air, so you will need to make sure that it is ventilated, but you don't want the holes too large, or your pets’ food might escape.  If you decide on a larger enclosure, you will need lots of things for your pet mantis to climb around on. You can use just about anything such as ivy, sticks, etc... Let your creativity guide you. Make sure that all of the items in your mantis enclosure are secured, so that they won't fall on and injure your pet. Your pet mantis will not need a water dish, as mantises drink water droplets from plant leaves, or from the side of the enclosure. You will water them once a day by misting the inside of their enclosure with a spray bottle. It usually only takes 1 or 2 squirts. Then you can feed them by placing a fly, cricket or other bug in the enclosure with them. They should be fed every day, but they won't always eat, especially when getting close to molting. If you notice that your pet mantis is not eating for a couple of days, then he or she is likely to molt soon. It is very important that they are not moved or disturbed at this time, as they could fall and it is almost always fatal. So before you touch their container for feeding, or misting them, always look inside and check on them. When they shed their old exoskeleton they are very soft and easily damaged. A few hours after they molt, their new exoskeleton will start to harden and once you see them moving around, it is safe to hold them again.Hope this helps....

Taking care of an injured praying mantis?

-Missing a leg or two, a leg or two broken
-Sometimes can't stand up straight or balance itself
-Greenish, about 2-2 1/2 inches (small)
-Currently living in a large white bowl/container w/paper towels to grip on to, and straws to climb on (I haven't gotten sticks or leaves yet) Has a clear plastic top w/air holes.
-Was living in a smaller glass bowl before.
-It's been almost 3 days.

It's not a proper home, I just don't want it to die when it gets cold outside. I want to release it when it's warmer outside. But it's fall now...

What should I feed it, and will it's legs grow back?

Pet Praying Mantis (beginner)?

Every year my brother and I go out and look for one or two in the wild to keep as pets. They don't need much care, and they are all really the same, it just depends on the manor of that particular mantis. We have had some that did nothing but fly at us and attack us, and we have had some that were very gental and would sit with you wherever you went. Where can you buy one? the only place that I have ever known to sell them live was at a giant outdoor flower event that we had by my town years back, you can buy egg sacks from some local flower stores where I live though. If you can find one that you can buy live consider yourself lucky. If you buy an egg sack, DON'T try to raise them to hatch in your house, it will only lead to them all dying and you having to clean them up, and several hundred nearly impossible to see insects will be a hassle to pick up. My advice would be to go out and find one yourself and catch it. Best places to look are green bushes and shrub-like trees, (i have never found one on a tree more than 7ft tall) they WILL BE very hard to see, and the odds are they are not going to move if you spook them, you have to see them. I have found a few perched on the side of brick buildings, that is sometimes a rescourcefull place to look. KEEP IN MIND that right about now is when they all start dying because winter is coming close, there are still some out here (in Illinois) my bro saw one the other day. HOW TO CARE FOR THEM: we always kept ours in a small glass aquarium, but any medium or large sized transparent box with a locking lid will work. Put small to medium sized wood chips in the bottom of the cage and ALWAYS put a stick (not a twig...) in there for them the hang from, ours always spent their time there. FOOD: crickets, just drop one or two in the cage, keep in mind though that they might not see it or want it until even a day or two after you put it in, you really can't force-feed these insects. They will see it when they are hungry so don't worry about them not eating. They usually live for about a few months, longest we ever had one was from mid September (WHEN THEY ATART APPEARING) to January becuause of the fair climate in our house. You shouldn't expect to find one on the first day of searching if you do intend to find one in the wild, they are VERY WELL camoflauged, so look twice before you move on, and stay out of your neighbor's yard!!

Is a praying mantis blind?

I just put my pet praying mantis on the bottom of a plant since it likes to climb, and I saw it reach out helplessly for something to get in it's grip. I'm worried that it could be blind! It didn't seem to be struggling when we first got it, but it's been about a week, and it seems to be going "down-hill." Could it have become blind in a few short days? Please let me know and thank you!

Injured Praying Mantis Advice?

Okay so a bug was buzzing us and I assumed it was a random fly or weird looking hornet. I managed to hit it with a puzzle box and we found it on the counter. I went to finish him off when I realized that it was in fact a young praying mantis. I'm fully aware they are not endangered or even remotely rare, but I feel horrible as they are one of my favorite insects.
The mantis is very lethargic but can move all limbs. It has moved from its side onto its belly and is moving by its front claws mainly. I don't see any outside damage to him, but it's obvious I hurt him. He's currently in a small bug house in a dark quiet room and appears to have improved slightly, but I could be wrong. Anyone with insect experience have any advice? I'd love to save him if possible, but if it's a loss cause I will put him out of his misery. I am willing to nurse it if possible- I have several dozen pin head crickets. I also have tanks I could keep him in, as well as a large flower garden I have found mantises in previous years.
