I Know How. I Used To Be In Real Estate Before Becoming On Artist Wanda B

In artists work, what do the letters IE, AP, and TP stand for?

The IE you saw may have been LE; I can't recall an IE abbreviation.

When an artist and publisher decide to create limited editions of an artist's works certain designations are used in the numbering of the edition. Here are the most common abbreviations you'll see:

Limited edition (LE)

Trial Proof (TP) -- Trial proofs are done to check for color, registration, image size, and texture before pulling the full edition. These are usually destroyed upon approval of the of the BAT.

BAT (Bon a tirier) -- This is the trial proof that is used as the standard for the rest of the edition. (In French it means "good to pull".) It is the only one marked as BAT.

Artist Proofs (AP) -- The AP's are the pieces designated as owned by the artist. Quite often these pieces are given to the artist in lieu of a portion of the payment. They have no additional value than the regular edition; however, the myth still prevails that these are in someway different or special.

Printer's Proofs (PP) -- The PP's, like the artist proofs, are given to the printmaker in lieu of a portion of payment. Again, these pieces have no additional value.

Museum (M) -- Originally M's were given to museums to promote the artist's work. This isn't the case anymore.

Hors Commerce (HC) -- Originally, HC's were not for sale, but for display only. Since the discovery of how to protect fine artwork has evolved, there hasn't been any need for this designation, but tradition prevails.

European Edition (EE) -- This designates a whole or part of an edition sold only in Europe. In some cases, there are as many of these pieces as the full edition in the United States with the same designators (i.e., AP, HC, M, etc.).

Asian Edition (AE) -- This designates a whole or part of an edition sold only in Asia. Again, the same case applies as the European Edition.

How will art change in the future?

As with Andy Warhol's mass produced imagery, future art will transgress to a barrier-free stew of global interaction. Globalization of digital art will be mainstream, as well as the tools to produce it. Youtube is a prime example of providing the tools, while others are taking measures into their own hands (http://www.wefeelfine.org/).

Art has the possibility of becoming more immersive. Gaming platforms are continually becoming more "constructive". Second Life, The SIMS, and World of Warcraft are virtual worlds where there is no objective. It mere acts as a place to create or simulate.

Currently there is already a reaction from the art, crafts, and design worlds. As a mind-numbing amount of regurgitated art comes out of the digital platforms, many of the art and design leaders are voicing the need for more structure.

Structure should be provided in terms of organized criticism, art preservation, commentary, and other forms of intellectual reflection. Education should be provided simultaneously in order to elevate the level of art and design appreciation.

As leaders voice their opinions, normal everyday citizens are in a movement of DIY (do-it-yourself). The Internet is helping the encounters between disciplines (scrapbooking, self-made clothing, graffiti, music, dance, etc).

Art, design, and advertising will further be blurred. Our senses will be bombarded but hopefully it will be for the best.
