I Like Sushi. Am I Alone On This

What is your opinion about Sushi?

I am vegetarian. Therefore Sushi is not an option.:)Anyway, Sushi is over hyped. If there are so many types of fish available for food, then why should people prefer sushi style of cooking alone. I am still unclear on reasons for a fish wrap to be so popular. I am sure that there must be plenty of other fish related food items available in restaurants and markets.

Why don't some people like sushi?

I get *so* much flak for hating sushi that I’ve gotta respond.First off, I love raw oysters. So it isn’t a question of raw seafood. For me, what I hate isthat sticky glutinous rice—I hate gelatinous food. plus it’s bland.seaweed — bitter with a texture that I can’t even describe ’cause I hate it so much. It’s the absolute worst thing in sushi, which is saying a lot because so many of the other ingredients are almost as bad. When I have to eat sushi, I tell the restaurant that I’m allergic to the stuff so they leave it off. Maybe I am allergic to it; it makes me sick just thinking about it.raw fish—I don’t like smoked salmon either, and a lot of sushi reminds me of it. Not the flavor so much as the texture. People say oysters are similar, but there’s a slight crunch when chewing raw oysters that I find very pleasant. Plus the flavor is so much better than any raw fish I’ve ever tasted. To me, raw fish and raw oysters are worlds apart, but a lot of my friends say I’m crazy.the overall mouth feel—you’re supposed to plop the whole thing in your mouth (at least I think so). It’s too much, too mouth-filling. Just unpleasant. About 1/2 of a typical piece of sushi is about how much I want to put in my mouth comfortably.Sea urchin—*shudder*Soy sauce—salty crapSo, that’s why some people (at least one person anyway) hate sushi. But I do love tobiko (sp?), the flying fish eggs. Love caviar even more. And wasabi is great.I’ve tried sushi maybe a dozen times or so and have hated it every single time. But to keep the peace, and to quit hearing about what a total cretin I am, if there’s such a thing as authentic sushi with no rice, seaweed, raw fish, or sea urchins, and doesn’t make me take a big pile of food into my mouth at once, please let me know. I’ll give it a try.

Any female sushi chefs?

you might consider reading this topic and the site.
''I think there are at least 200 women sushi chefs in Japan,'' said Toshio Suzuki, the owner-chef of Sushi Zen in Midtown. He has trained two women as sushi chefs, Takako Yoneyama, 52, the owner of Taka in Greenwich Village, and Miho Tanaka, 43, at Sushi a Go-Go near Lincoln Center.

For a woman to become a sushi chef in Japan has been easier since 1999. That year, Japan revised its Equal Employment Opportunity Law to mandate equality in hiring and promotion. Japan also lifted a ban that prohibited women from working later than 10 p.m. But laws alone weren't keeping women from becoming sushi chefs.

I have been in Japan for many years and never met a female sushi chef, it all man's world when it came to sushi but there are some around..Most are apprentices and they find it difficult to work with male sushi chefs that is why they just remain apprentices. Japan has million population but the sushi female chef is really not being recognized.
nice to know that you are a female sushi chef. I love sushi but I am picky about sushi, I don't eat sushi that is not fresh, I don't mind paying more if it is really good. that is why sushi chefs are highly paid job in Japan for their dedication and good reputation in making their sushi fresh on the counter.

How can you tell if sushi has gone bad/spoiled?

Does anyone know the answer to this? You can say your experience on eating spoiled sushi and how it looked bad and taste sour but I really want to know the facts on how you can tell if a sushi is spoiled (it's for a science project). Sources would be very nice as well. Thanks!

I want to go vegan but I love sushi! What can I do?

I have multiple food allergies and cannot tolerate diary, egg, shellfish, citrus fruit, etc, so my diet is almost vegan. I am not a meat-lover so it should not be too difficult, except I really love fish especially salmon! I already gave up my favorite ice-cream and yogurt last year after I was diagnosed with serious food allergy. I cannot imagine taking salmon out of my meal!

However, I really find it inappropriate to bring up my health issue all the time, like explaining to the waiters / waitresses in every restaurant and people I meet for the first time. I tend to avoid all unnecessary social events now and it's deeply affecting my life. I figured out if I could simply say "I am a vegan", it would avoid some awkward situations. But I do not want to feel like a liar when I say I am a vegan but still eat salmon and I do feel sorry for the salmons too because they are almost the only animal I eat, so I really hesitate.

Anyone with similar experiences? Anyone who loves sushi and decides to become vegan? How did you handle it? Is it a lot of work to obtain balanced nutrition? (Besides I am living in a hectic city with very few, if not nearly no choices of vegan food. A Japanese restaurant even refused to substitute mayo with vinaigrette on a meatless salad while they used vinaigrette on a crab salad. Awareness of veganism is extremely low here.)

Do you think its pathetic to go to Sushi restaurant alone?

NO, I would love to be able to do this again. I did not realize it at the time because I felt the same way. However, I would love to done by myself.

I don't think it is sad or pathetic to go out to a restaurant alone or see a movie alone.
I love Sushi but I don't get to go often unless I am with my mother or visiting my brother.

Enjoy your sushi and you should not have to pretend to be on your phone.

Going to a sushi restaurant?

I am going to a sushi restaurant this week in the detroit area. I've only tried it once. What i am wondering is if i can get something vegetarian, or if its out of the ordinary to get it cooked. Any suggestions on what i should order as a beginner would be helpful too.

Which do you prefer: sushi or sashimi?

I definitely prefer sushi (nigiri). That doesn’t mean I turn my nose up at sashimi, if that’s what’s in front of me!But like Peter Flom says, the contrast of temperatures and textures between the rice and the fish is just something special.I have a bit of a ‘thing’ about texture. Too much straight raw fish flesh is…well, just too much. I far prefer there to be something with a little crunch or substance to it.My very favorite thing is a good hand roll!I love how the nori has a bit of snap to it; the rice is firm and pure; and there are so many options to go inside.Anything with spicy mayo gets my vote - I could drink the stuff with a straw.I even like my hand rolls to have some kind of crunchy vegetable - cucumber, asparagus, lettuce, jalapeno…wouldn’t want the fish to get lonely in there.Maki is difficult for me. There are so many fascinating combinations of ingredients and I love to see something original when trying a new sushi restaurant.Unfortunately, the pieces are often too large for me to comfortably eat in one bite. And if you’ve ever tried eating a piece of a sushi roll in more than one bite…well, you know it just doesn’t work.So I wind up with my cheeks packed full of food that’s undoubtedly tasty, but since it’s all crammed together while I try to move my jaws enough to chew it, I don’t get to properly enjoy the deliciousness.
