I Like The Stinging Feeling Of Alcohol On A Cut

Why do i like the sting of rubbing alcohol on a cut?

I think it has more to do with sensory overload and the release of endorphins. I do exactly the same thing. I hate getting cut or hurt, but when I do, I can't wait to pour alcohol all over it. It's sort of a "grit your teeth" kind of pain, but it has a euphoric effect.

Suspect there are several causes. Alcohol is toxic to peripheral nerves and can cause peripheral neuropathy, thus it is reasonable to suspect odd sensations associated with alcohols effect effects on nerves. The tingling may be due to the fact that alcohol dilates peripheral (surface, skin) blood vessels which brings heat to the surface. Blood vessels within muscles may constrict. It is possible that these contrasting effects on blood flow may cause the sensation. This in contrast to a somewhat vasoconstricting effect on muscle vasculature. Some people have acetaldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency which results in red blotchy skin when drinking. Headache, and nausea often occur. This genetic defect is found in 36% of asians. This may be described as tingly but since your sensation seems limited to your legs it doesn’t fit very well.In summary I suspect it is more likely due to vascular effects and heat exchange. I can’t really say for sure, and a little research I did, did not provide any sound explanation.Be careful

There's nothing strange with not approving of AA. Actually, their God fearing strategy is quite appalling: the individual has no power whatsoever over their alcohol intake, and the only way to recover is to put one's faith completely in God.Now, this viewpoint of theirs is two-edged. Some alcoholics do certainly benefit from using AA's framwork. The reason they became alcoholics in the first place was to some extent because they felt they had no power, and they intend to keep their lives that way. To these people, AA is invaluable and most likely their best shot. However, if you still want to claim personal power over your own life, then AA will feel somewhat malplaced. On the other hand, wanting to have control over one's own life, means that you are better predisposed to help yourself. If you want to cut down drinking, the best way is to try out different strategies. If something works for you, continue to do that. There are a lot of strategies available on the internet. Just search for controlled drinking, and you will find a lot of interesting stuff.Actually, every single non-alcoholic I know is using different drinking strategies. The alcoholics I know have failed finding strategies that work for them.I use these strategies myself: Only drink with food intake. Only drink one bottle of beer (or glass of wine). Never drink when I'm sad. Never drink if I feel a strong urge for it. Never drink routinely, e.g. if I don't feel any urge at all. Finally, AA's sect-like manners also have a positive side. AA is creating a society for sobriety. I believe that their main benefit is because they succeed in creating a group unity, which helps the partaking individuals to refrain from drinking. But it should be mentioned too that AA does not have a 100% recovery rate.

I like to cut my arms and rub alcohol into the wound. Is there something wrong with me?

It seems every time I look at a blade I get this urge to do it, almost like a habit. Don't get me wrong, I'm a happy person, and I don't cut my wrists. I just like the feeling of a blade cutting into my skin just to the point of it causing some mild "tearing" of blood. Once the sensation starts to die I pour whatever alcohol I have into the wound and experience an almost instant tingling head rush. I try to hold off from doing it but sometimes can't help the urge. Is this wrong?

They shouldn't be doing that. That will give you the worst possible stinging burning sensation imaginable. If it's a big wound, the first thing that needs to be done is pressure bandaging, and then call for help. There's no way you can treat a large deep wound by yourself.

Alcohol causes dilatation of superficial skin vessels (peripheral vasodilatation). Hence the feeling of warmth. Yes it's ONLY A FEELING.In winter when body needs to conserve heat and hence body constricts peripheral skin vessels.Drinking alcohol and exposing to cold may cause one to get into low body temp due to alcohol induced peripheral vasodilatation. In case such a situation arises, one need to cover oneself really well to prevent hypothermia.

My cuts sting and burn really bad?

There is always a risk when self-harming. Try TCP or Savlon cream as you need to prevent an infection setting in. Check out www.thesite.org/healthandwellbeing/ment...
But you need to get support to help you to deal with this and your Doctor is the first place to start. Alternatively, speak to a trusted tutor and ask about counseling. There will be issues buried in your past which lead to the low self-esteem which causes you (and a frighteningly increasing number of other beautiful young girls) to feel the need to self-harm. It will not be likely to go away or get better. So get support and advice on this before it takes full control of you and leads into full depression - which is a deep, dark, scary place. good luck and best wishes x

In an absolute emergency, it is an acceptable disinfectant if you have no iodine or similar disinfectant available and cannot get to a doctor-it will kill the majority of bacteria. It's not advisable for a freely bleeding wound-these have a way of cleaning themselves through the flow of blood. As for 'cons' there are essentially two. The first, and the smaller of the two, is pain. Having poured alcohol directly on an open wound it will be nearly impossible for the injured person to keep still/quiet for what needs done after disinfection, or if, gods forbid, you're in a dangerous situation where they may give you away. The second is tissue damage. It is generally fairly minor, but it will often interfere with the eventual healing of the wound. Of course, if the options are disinfect and close or let someone bleed out, it's far better to do a small amount of damage to the tissues than to lose a life.

What does it feel like to cut your wrists?

I've never experienced this, but I'm guessing that there would be a lot of burning/stinging because just like when you cut yourself with a knife by accident or a paper cut it stings a lot. I don't know how the bleeding would feel because I've never even had a blood test. But maybe you would feel the blood coming out of you?
