I Live In Utica Ny My Neighbors Are Very Noisy

Which Brooklyn West Indian/American Neighbourhood is safe to live in?

STAY AWAY from Brownsville, Bushwick, East New York and Bed Stuy. I live in Canarsie until last year when I move to Boston. It is very nice, quiet middle class neighborhood but its quite expensive. Another place you can try is Flatlands and Georgetown.

If you like lots of noise and real Caribbean culture go to East Flatbush or Flatbush. It can be very bustling in those areas. You get the real ethnic culture there especially along Nostrand Avenue and Flatbush Avenue (The Junction).

What is your favorite neighborhood in Syracuse, New York?

There are several great neighborhoods in Syracuse. It really depends on who you are as to which will cry home to you. If you’re a crunchy feely type, the Westcott Nation is for you. Westcott Street cherishes the weird and goofy. It has eclectic stores, the best Mexican food in town, two great parks, and, on the edge, an amazing rose garden and Syracuse University. The downside is students, with their attendant noise and chaos.Bradford Hills is beautiful. Situated above Nottingham High School, on the city’s southeast side, Bradford Hills has gorgeous homes on large lots. Another gorgeous neighborhood is Strathmore on the west side, which has many architecturally interesting old houses. Ward Wellington Ward designed and built several of the houses here, and there are many other charming older homes, too. It is right next to Onondaga Park, which is a lovely green space. The oldest great neighborhood is Sedgwick Farms. Located in the northeast side of the city, it boasts its own tennis club with clay courts. Most of the homes were built between 1900–1930, and they are spacious, gracious houses. They were built when servants were an accepted way of life, so almost all come with back staircases and servants’ quarters on the top floors.Eastwood, on the far eastern side of Syracuse, is a friendly area with smaller houses and helpful neighbors. Most houses are WWII vintage, and sturdily built. Another area much like Eastwood is Salt Springs. It is located on the other side of the hill from Nottingham, and also has a real neighborhood feel.Lastly, there is the Valley, also known as South of Seneca. This area is on the southern edge of the city. It has several good schools, a public pool, a great library branch, an ice skating rink, playing fields, and even a duck pond. All in all, there are several good areas and some hidden small gems. The best thing to do is not take my word for it, but to explore on your own. Good luck!

How safe is the campus at Syracuse University?

Campus is pretty safe. You've got campus police making regular rounds and a host of security cameras. There are also Blue Light Alarm Systems in all major spots around campus. As any place else, follow all necessary precautions. There are occasionaly reports of students being robbed or mugged - this happens exclusively to those who are walking home, late at night, alone.Travel in groups after dark. Make use of the night-time shuttle services, etc. Some neighborhoods around campus are sketchy. Look up crime stats from the city's police department to get a better idea of the safest places to live in.

Is it better to go straight to a university or to community college, then transfer to a university, after high school?

Your question shows that you are already aware that you have some alternatives you can choose from as you anticipate continuing your education. They include considerations of readiness, ability to pay, need for additional preparation and so-on. If you have already been accepted at the university, feel ready to leave home to go to college, and can afford the complete four years (or have plenty of access to grants and loans) I’d say to go ahead an enroll at the university. Having the continuity of four years at the same institution can prove to be a great benefit. However, if you need a couple of years to strengthen you academic credentials, don’t feel ready to leave home, or think you can lessen the costs of the university of four year college by attending you local or regional community college, this can be a really good choice. Several programs in community colleges provide the first two years of general education to help you get used to college level work, manage your expenditures, and spend some time before going off more-or-less on your own. In this case, the development of community colleges as an integrated part of states’ multi-level higher education systems, community colleges represent an opportunity and substantial savings. Most community colleges have “articulation agreements” which guarantee a student completing their general education component, consisting of the first two years, with an acceptable GPA admission to the junior year of the upper division school. Most of these articulation agreements will specify at least some courses in the first two years that would be equivalent to required courses on their campuses. Successful completion of the program will give you an Associate Degree and get you accepted to the State University or universities in your state, or even region. One of the great things about the American system of education is its flexibility. There are numerous points of entry and many ways of adjusting your program to be able to meet your emerging concept of your needs. Deferring college attendance, dropping in and out, relative horizontal ease of transfer, and availability of alternative means of financing your education are all benefits you can use to your own advantage. Learn about them and learn to prosper.

How can I get my adult son to move out of my house?

I understand this is a very difficult situation.  You don't want your son to hate you, yet you also dont' want to be taken advantage of.  You do need to come up with two contracts.  One for being a room mate, and the other with a formal date he needs to move out by.  He gets to choose which contract he wants.  Go get your signature notarized at the your bank to make it look more official.  IF he chooses to stay as a room mate he needs to pay rent and he needs to pay YOU a cleaning fee of XX$ (whatever) per week, and if he refuses, you very very sweetly give him written notice of eviction, done through the proper legal channels.  He may be depressed. He may be entitled and using you. You can try talking to him about this, to HELP him develop a move out plan. You have to be very DIRECT.  If he still refuses to do what you ask, you need to make life VERY uncomfortable for him.  Do not keep toilet paper in the bathroom (hide it in your room) Make sure your bedroom door has a new knob with key or passcode lock.  Also buy almost NO food. Keep whatever food you can in your bedroom, hidden.  Go out to eat more - buy inexpensive takeout for YOURSELF and don't give in.  Hide the laundry detergent in your bedroom.  Then call your internet provider and have it turned off for a short time. NO cable TV or internet will drive him crazy.  Then remove the bedroom door from his bedroom and place it inside your bedroom or (better yet) give it to your neighbor / friend to hide in their garage and don't tell him where it is!  Take the blinds off his bedroom window.  Hide them. Tell him you will return these items when he starts paying rent.
