I Lose Almost All My Senses

Have you ever lost one of your 5 senses?

Yes.When I was a university undergrad for a summer job I worked one year in a mining camp.Being out in the middle of nowhere there wasn’t much to do in our off-time but there were lots of small lakes in the area so we often went swimming. One lake in particular looked very clean and inviting. The water was clear enough to see the bottom and it was very inviting. It wasn’t until later that I found out the reason the water was so clear was that it was polluted by chemicals from the mining and nothing could live in the water. By that time though I’d gotten a sinus infection from swimming in the water. The infection lasted for two or three years during which I lost almost all sense of smell. In the years since my sense of smell has mostly returned but there are still some things I can’t smell, or can’t smell very well.Fortunately one of the things that I almost can’t smell is skunks. Initially I couldn’t smell them at all but as the years go by I’m more aware of them. Now, if I’m very close to where a skunk let loose I can tell that a skunk was there but at a point where most people are gagging I’m sort of going, ‘well, that’s sort of unpleasant but no big deal’.

What is it like to lose your sense of taste?

I have a very good friend that was in a terrible car accident about 10 years ago (she is now 34), and she permanently lost her sense of taste and smell. At first she was horribly depressed, but a few years later she described to me what it was like to live without her sense of taste anymore:Pros:*Foods that she knew to be extremely healthful but tasted horrible, she can now eat with no problems (good example - we went for wheatgrass shots at Jamba Juice after a workout.  I was gagging to the point of almost vomiting while she just took the shot, looked at me, laughed and went about her day.*Business dinners, or lunches where strange foods are served are much easier to attend since the strange food in question doesn't have a taste!Cons:*When someone asks the question "How does it taste?" A lot of times she will reply "good" or "wonderful!" Just to avoid having to explain the entire incident on how she lost her sense of taste. *Never again will she know what a delicious home-cooked Thankgiving dinner tastes like.  That was the one thing she confessed to me while tearing up. What red blooded American doesn't love Thanksgiving? She still does, and partakes in it yearly  but unfortunately can not taste or smell it. *Even though she can't taste food, it doesn't mean she has lost the cravings for food. One night, she ate an entire box of Krispy Kreme donuts tying to get just a small taste of one. *With no taste, it is much easier to drink anything to the point of blackouts. She explained it very well: "losing my sense of taste and smell is a small price to pay to still be alive"

Why have i lost my sense of Taste?

i have had a stuffy nose for almost 3 weeks, and i lost my taste, things like chocolate tase really nasty and bitter now, hot stuff doesn't tase hot, somethings just don't have any taste at all, why is this?

When did you lose all sense of morality?

When you sense that everyone else around you is immoral, unethical and/or almost evil, you put yourself and your own benefits above everyone else's. Loss of faith in humanity was one reason I began questioning and reevaluating whether my level of morality was reasonable.

Which of your five senses would you LEAST want to lose?

my sense of sight because if i go blind, i'd be most vulnerable because i won't be able to see and i will need help and guidance in even the littlest of tasks and i'd hate that because i do not want to be a burden to anyone.

also, i wouldn't be able to see people through their eyes which is important for me because i gauge their sincerity & psyche through their eyes.

and of course, since i am appreciative of the beauty of nature, i'd be really sad if i won't see these glorious creations.

If I were to lose access to all five of my senses, how could I confirm my existence?

The answer to this needs to split at least two ways:Firstly, you have far more than 5 senses... somewhere around 15, depends on how you count and who does the counting and the defining. The most important sense for confirming that you exist is proprioception. It is rare that people lose this sense, but it does happen. Oliver Sacks wrote a story on it. I remember the distress of the person he talked to. She lost her body, she lost her existence. She REALLY wanted to die, she felt like a ghost. The second part of the answer is turning around and looking at the question: How do you confirm your existence now? While you supposedly DO have all your senses? This is not as straightforward as it seems. What exactly is it that thinks, feels, sees, is hungry? The closer you look, the less it is there.Something is there, alright. What exactly is it?In deep meditation, the internal dialogue dies down. Strangely enough,,,, all your senses are intact, but the ringmaster that keeps the whole circus hopping has gone to sleep for a while and ceased his endless, infuriating patter.THAT is where our self-confirmed existence as "I" is seen as what it is.Your question kind of wobbles, it points into  a wrong direction. The senses are not the central point of confirming your "existence".Your internal dialogue is.

Is eyesight the last sense a dying person loses ?

No, it's often one of the first because the retina needs an abundant supply of oxygen to function and as the body shuts down, oxygen is usually in short supply with the brain taking priority.

As someone slips into unconsciousness, it's usually hearing which is the last to be lost.

This is almost certainly the case also when someone is dying - but, of course, if they are truly dying, they can never be able to tell us afterwards.

This is why you should continue to talk reassuringly to someone who is becoming unconscious or dying - they'll still be able to hear you even if they can't let you know. The last thing anyone wants to hear as they pass out or drift off towards death is some idiot saying something inappropriate.

What one of the five senses would you be willing to lose in order to acquire a super human sense? Which super human sense would you like to have?

My sense of smell isn't very good. Yet although it’s almost gone, I'd rather have it all back, than a super sense. If modern urban living wasn't so noisy, I'd pick hearing as a super sense. It'd be neat to be able to hear all the sounds of animal movement and communication around us. But such a sense would be wasted in modern living as most noises have little merit, and are unpleasant. So I'd pick sight; having an acute vision that could make out details from a great distance, see in the dark, and see over a wide spectral range including infra-red. And I'd lose the sense of smell which reluctantly I've been almost living without for some time.If I didn't have to give up a sense, and could have on sense super-modified, I'd pick smell.
