I Love Horse Riding So Much

Why do you love horse riding?

Some people go to therapy, I ride horses. Some people meditate, I ride horses. Some people let stress bog them down and become less productive individuals because of it, I ride horses.I always say to people who don’t understand the allure of horseback riding that it is the closest thing to therapy for me. In reality, it’s the closest thing to meditation. Meditating is all about being aware of the breath. A huge part of riding horses and maintaining control of the horse is by controlling your own body, which includes your breath. Have an excited horse? Notice the tenseness of your body, take a deep breath, relax your back. The horse will calm (not talking about crazy green horses here).Horses react to you. You need to be present in the moment and control/harness their reactions. If you’re stressed, or have a lot on your mind, go ride a horse. You don’t have time to think about other things because if you let your mind wander, you can end up on the ground. You can only focus on riding the horse. When else do you truly get to forget about everything else in your life? Honestly, ever?I recently broke my hand in a riding accident. During the healing process I couldn’t ride (or do much of anything, really). I noticed my stress levels peaked and I couldn’t handle unexpected situations as well. I was also very easily agitated. Now that I am better, I can handle the stresses of my lifestyle and am back in the present moment. This is largely, if not completely, attributed to riding.I could go on and on about the other things that riding does for me - about how truly understanding a horse and its movements is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. About how the personalities of horses varies wildly and is incredibly entertaining. About how they are beautiful creatures. About how it feels to “fly” when jumping. About the sense of accomplishment you feel after taking care of such a large animal, and how you truly understand and feel respect from and to an animal. About a million other things.. But truly, my answer is simple.. I do it to stay sane.

Should I quit riding horses?

Coming from an underprivileged background, riding horses has been something I've constantly had to fight for. I love it so much, I really do. Or, well, I used to.

I ride for both of my university's equestrian teams, which means my schedule is INSANE. However, I recently got an injury that's given me far more time off and it's been GREAT (well, the injury-part sucks). I've actually had time to be a normal college student and it's made me wonder how differently my life could've been and could still be if I'd quit riding. I used to love horses so much, but lately, I can't remember why I fell in love with the sport in the first place. I'm always in a constant state of exhaustion, my grades have been suffering, and I'm always stressed. It's to the point where I'm dreading healing because I don't want to go back to that crazy schedule. I'm tired all the time and I have 0 free time to hang out with friends who aren't on the team.

All this being said, I also don't want to disappoint anyone - least of all my coaches or teammates. What do I do? How do I handle this situation so that no one gets hurt?

*No, I did not get my injury by falling off a horse, though it did happen at the barn. However, the last time I rode, I did almost take a near-fall and haven't had the opportunity to get back on since*

Why do women love riding horses so much?

There are more men who like to drive fast cars, and there are more women who like to ride horses. My mom was an avid horse rider, she said that she loved the animals. I think men like cars because they can have total control, the car will do what the driver wants it to. Women are more into horses because they can have an emotional connection to the animal, whereas you can't have that level of emotional attachment to a car.

This is just generalizing though, that's why there are men (like me!) who would rather ride a nice horse than a nice car. Why those women laughed? Who knows, maybe they were just mean.. but most horse owners are extremely nice, regardless of gender.

Do you like riding on a horse?

One of my favorite memories is riding a horse into the ocean. “My” horse Cherokee liked it. Some of the horses loved it and some didn't want to go in deep enough to swim. When we lived in Okinawa we could lease horses by the month. That meant taking care of the horse, grooming and food. I was so happy when my parents finally let me lease Cherokee. He was a small horse with a very good nature. If I was riding him around dinner time he’d get this look. I'd just say “okay” and he'd gallop to the stable to the food bucket! He had a doglike nature. We were a group of friends who leased the horses and we got to know all the horses. We took lessons together before leasing them. If you rode Whiskey, you had to be aware he would try to decapitate you when you rode under a wire. Frank was a cranky horse who’d turn around & bite you (not too hard) but he loved Coca Cola. Hot Wire had a foal named Dynamite.I was about 12 then. I was passionate about knowing and riding horses. Thank you for the chance to visit some wonderful memories. It was an honor to get to know horses and realize they had such different personalities!

Why do you love horses...?

There's a lot of reasons. Horses are amazing animals. It's just incredible how much they can help someone. I just feel so relaxed while working with them, I love horses any always will.

Do you like horse riding sport?

My horses are not just a sport. They are my friends. I make sure they enjoy the ride as much as I do. My horse will stand very still until I mount. He knows I am getting old and slow. He will not run away are give me a hard time. I reward him with carrots for his good behavior. I know he loves me as much as I love him. My older horses I have had for years will follow where ever I go. If I tell one to stop they all stop. They know I will not harm them, and trust me. To some it might be a sport. But I am sure they love there horses to. If not you can have a very large animal mad and untrustworthy.

Why do you love horses so much?

After having many dogs, cats, hamsters, birds, rabbit, rats, and horses, the horse stands out. Horses are deep, deep soul animals. Their love, affection and respect is gained and built. When that bond is developed it is a partnership, friendship that only increases with time. Now, a horse is able to size you up instantaneously. The second your rear end touches the saddle, they know. They know your ability and skill with them. Some will choose to be kind and gentle. Some, not so much. A skilled rider they will respect and listen to. There is a saying about a great rider will bring a poorly trained horse up to their level while a poor rider will bring a great horse down to theirs. Now dogs, who I also love, they love us some what unconditional. We are dogs sunshine. Horses will be our sunshine, thunder, and so on once that bond is built. I love my service dog completely. She is somewhat like a child to me. My horses, they are more like a best friend. I must add that the love of horses almost seems genetic. I,like many other girls for as long as I can remember, was horses crazy. ( my poor parents).lastly, stare deeply into the eyes of a horse as it rests. You will fall deeply into the peace and sereneness of it's soul. Blow slowly from your nostril into Thiers. You will feel their warm sweet breath fall across your face as they gently yet intently say hello. Deep, deep souls, that is why we love horses.
