No, and can I say I am both surprised and appalled at some of the answers here. It helps? It doesn't hurt? I think I saw someone even say yes. I am not sure if I should be answering this question because of my emotions I'm feeling and language coming into my mind.Hiphop is the antithesis of pop music. Do you need to know how to sing to rap?

Some professional rappers get vocal lessons such as myself. I’ve received vocal lessons in the past and it helps to get a good vocal coach but not necessarily for rap or rapping. It doesn’t matter if you can’t “sing too well” what matters is if you have an ear and can recognize keys that are off or tones that do not harmonize with a track. As long as you can recognize where your off when singing you can correct that in your own unique voice…you don’t have to sound like Luther Vandross to make a great rap-sing style song…I mix my singing and rap voice together which sounds raspy at times and quite different…keep practicing with your voice and style and let it evolve. Experimenting with new music styles and vocal tones is very much encouraged, you have the right idea and if you wanted to get vocal lessons it can only add to your repertoire and showmanship.You don’t have to sing to be a rapper, you can get singers or people you know to sing the hook or chorus on your song(s). It helps to be able to harmonize or create melodies but as long as you can convey your idea and sound to a much better singer they can handle the singing portion of the song for you.
