I Need Good Rappers Who

How can one become a good rapper?

Multiple things can make a good rapper. Some rappers have a voice that draws you in from the start (ex. Method Man, Je’kob). This isn’t really something you can control very much, but it gives an advantage to those that have a great voice.Relatability. If you feel a connection with a rapper’s lyrics, then you’ll want to keep listening to them. Likewise, if you’re the rapper and you’re looking to engage or impact your audience, you need to be able to relate to them.Storytelling. Rap is a great tool for telling stories and being able to create vivid imagery in your music is a great skill to have (see: GBKW by Murs).Versatility. I mean more than one thing by this. If you’re exclusively a punchline rapper, people will eventually get bored of you. If you exclusively storytell, then people will eventually get bored of you. If you only make heartfelt music, people will eventually get bored of you (in my own personal experience, I loved NF’s first two albums, but by Perception, he was rehashing the same 3 or 4 messages in most of his music and it got old to me; on the other hand, that album charted very well).Versatility also means being able to switch up how you rap. If you rap in the same cadence at the same tempo in every single one of your songs, people will get bored fast. On KB’s newest album, Today We Rebel, he demonstrated this very well. He switched up styles, flow, cadence, etc. throughout the album, and sometimes even multiple times within a song!Have something to say. Rappers like Flo Rida never have an actual message, and that’s why they’re weak artists. You need to be able to convey a message, whatever you decide that message is (social issues, personal issues, love, substance abuse, sex, etc.)Clever lyrics. Being able to write memorable punchlines, double entendres, and similes and metaphors will draw people in and make people remember your music. You don’t have to be a master at all of these things to be a good rapper, but you should have at least a few of these points to be considered good, in my opinion.

Do I have to rap fast to be good?

Flo Rida rapped fast.GZA never really rapped fast. However, we’ve heard stuff like this from him, from “Protect Ya Neck” off Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)The Wu is too slamming for these Cold Killin' labelsSome ain't had hits since I seen Aunt MabelBe doin' artists in like Cain did AbelNow they money's gettin' stuck to the gum under the tableThat's what you get when you misuse what I inventYour empire falls and you lose every centFor tryna blow up a scrubNow that thought was just as bright as a 20-watt light bulbWhat does that mean?It means that you don’t need to rap fast and slow delivery can allow you to fill your bars with metaphors, similes and kick-ass wordplay. But you can also rap fast, like Kendrick Lamar (albeit not incredibly rapid), and fill your faster rapped verses like this, from “Rigamortis” off Section. 80.And this is rigamortus and it's gorgeous when you dieAli recorded, and I'm Morpheus, the matrix of my mindI'm out the orbit, you an orphan and a hairdresser combinedI'm on the toilet when I rhyme, if you the shit then I declineI climax where you begin and then I end on Cloud 9And that's important when you morph into an angel in the skyAnd don't be forging all my signatures, my listeners replyAnd tell me that you biting style, you got a hell of an appetiteAnd I'mma be here for a while just buckle up before the rideOr knuckle up if you could fight, we always making 'em duck or dieIt rarely means anything significant if a rapper raps fast or not. Generally, rappers tend to slow down their delivery and instead make their words clear so their message, and tell a story with clarity. Like the aforementioned example, Kendrick certainly has slowed down his verses to tell a story or rhetoric, from “u” off To Pimp a Butterfly. You the reason why mama and them leavin'No you ain't shit, you say you love them, I know you don't mean itI know you're irresponsible, selfish, in denial, can't help itYour trials and tribulations a burden, everyone felt itEveryone heard it, multiple shots, corners cryin' outYou was deserted, where was your antennas again?Where was your presence, where was your support that you pretend? You ain’t no brother, you ain’t no disciple, you ain’t no friendA friend never leave Compton for profit or leave his best friendLittle brother, you promised you’d watch him before they shot himThis verse wouldn’t have had the same effect if he rapped it at super-speed.
