I Need Help Choosing A Career In The Health Or Science Field

Is health science a good major?

That would be a waste of time.
Do some reading up on careers.
Volunteer.
Go visit a local hospital or rehabilitation center or doctor's office and shadow for a day or 6.

Taking the time and spending the money on a degree in Health Science would be a waste because any career you would choose would require a specialized degree or training anyway. Why waste your time and money for a degree that cannot be applied to (most) anything?

Why did YOU choose to go into the medical field?

Because I wanted a job that had meaning, doing something I felt was important, contributing something worthwhile to other people to make their lives better.

Because I knew it would be flexible, provide excellent benefits, long-term career stability and potential for advancement / furthering education, wages would be enough to support my family.

Careers: Mental Health Counseling or Occupational Therapy?

Right now I am at a cross roads in terms of career paths. I have been accepted to a graduate program in Mental Health Counseling and another program in Occupational Therapy. I am not sure which program I should choose. I REALLY enjoy counseling. I would really love to help individuals with mental illnesses (depression/anxiety disorders), issues with self-esteem and relationship issues. For this reason, I applied to a graduate program in Mental Health Counseling. I have been accepted to the program and am very excited!

A year ago I started having doubts about whether counseling was a good profession to pursue because I was hearing a little too many negative remarks from people within this field saying that "you will not get paid that well considering you had to work for a Masters", "I had to leave the profession because I was having a hard time paying back my loans" "I wasn't making enough money to live so I had to choose another career". These remarks planted the seed of doubt in me. I began looking for another profession that I would probably like, that has good job prospects/in demand, that pays well, and that takes less time to become licensed. I did my research and found occupational therapy to be a good fit. I picked occupational therapy because of the mental health component that is involved in this field. I am very much interested in mental health and for this reason I applied to an occupational therapy program. Now that I have the option of pursuing a career in occupational therapy, I am scared to go down that path because I am scared that I will realize too late that I pursued a career because of security (good job prospects/well paid jobs) and not because of my passion and vision. Who knows, maybe I can still accomplish my visions using an occupational therapy approach. However, I don't know this for obvious reasons. Perhaps you can give me some guidance based on your experiences as an OT AND an MHC.

Any information, tips, advice, ANYTHING you can do to help me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Is a career in orthotics and prosthetics a good one to get into?

I am a student about to graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. Knowing my chances of finding a good job with just my bachelor's degree is slim to none, I have been researching many opportunities I have for graduate school. This is why I chose this major at 18 years old because I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do then. I only knew the field I wanted to pursue and that of course being health care. I have done a work-study at my university's athletic training room. I taped athletes, helped out with rehab, and monitored many practices and games. Realizing the hours involved with athletic training, I realized this wasn't the field for me. I am completing an internship in physical therapy right now and love working with people and helping them. Physical therapy is great, but the competition to get into a doctorate program is insane and I know my gpa is not strong enough to apply. Also, I feel that PTs see the same thing every week (knee replacement, back problems, neck problems etc.)

I then came across the prosthetics field and instantly became fascinated. I have such a respect for amputees and find the ability to help them in anyway would be awesome. I have spent hours researching the field online and have came across only the academy's website saying great things about the field.

I would like to get a practitioner's or student's point of view. Is this a good field to get into? If so, is finding a residency easy or hard? And are any paid? The idea of spending 6 years in school graduated with a bachelor's and master's then doing a non-paid residency for one year frightens me, especially when I am paying for my own school with many loans. Yes I have zero experience in the field right now, but have been trying to contact offices around my area asking to volunteer in their facility and simply learn more about the field before applying to grad school, since most schools require you to do so. They seem like they want nothing to do with a student when I called asking them, but instead just took down my name and number. I have a feeling they will not be calling me back.

Another question I have is if there is such a shortage of these practitioners, then why is there only one program available in my state (PA, Pitt)? In addition, there aren't that many in the country to begin with.
